Chapter 134: What If He Gets Taken Away?

"2024 The Starlight Cup Cello Competition Results Announcent

Dear participants, judges, and beloved audience mbers:

The 2024 The Starlight Cup Cello Competition has concluded successfully. Thank you to all contestants for your outstanding performances.

After careful deliberation by the judging panel, we are pleased to announce the results of this year's competition:

Champion: Bai Xi – Golden Dance

Runner-Up: Gan Yanyu – Cello Concerto in E Minor

Third Place: Zhu Ya – Erwin: Grandioso in C-Sharp Major"

Lin Tian hadn't even finished reading the announcent when Gan Yanyu stood up abruptly.

"Where are you going?" he asked.

"To get so water."

She opened the fridge, pulled out a can of beer. Was that what she ant by "water"?

With a sharp hiss, she popped the tab and leaned against the cold tiled wall, her slender figure illuminated by the dim light as she tilted her head back and drank deeply.

"I think it's the judges' fault," Lin Tian said earnestly from the couch. "There's no way Bai Xi's performance was better than yours."

"Mm-hmm."

"Gao Zhenyang knows his stuff, and even he thought your performance surpassed Bai Xi's. This second-place finish doesn't make sense."

"Mm-hmm."

"Hey, it is what it is. Runner-up is still an incredible achievent. I'm sure the judges at The Parrot Cello Contest will be more professional than those at The Starlight Cup."

"Lin Tian." Gan Yanyu suddenly called out his na, interrupting him.

"Hmm?"

She looked into Lin Tian's eyes, a faint smile tugging at her lips. "Do I really seem like soone who can't handle a little disappointnt?"

"You kinda do."

"In truth, I saw this coming." She shrugged lightly. "I'm just glad I managed to perform your piece well without ssing up. That alone makes happy."

"Bai Xi is truly remarkable," Gan Yanyu continued. "Right now, there's probably no young cellist in Qingjiang who could compete with her. Soone like her would play your classical compositions brilliantly too."

"No, Miss Gan—" Lin Tian interrupted, unsure why she'd shifted the topic so suddenly.

"It's fine. The art exams are only a week away. Let's focus on that and keep pushing forward."

With that, Gan Yanyu opened the door to Lin Tian's apartnt.

Bam.

And closed it behind her.

It seed she was taking the loss harder than she let on. Lin Tian sighed. Gan Yanyu had worked so hard for this competition, and while she tried to put on a brave face, anyone in her position would find such a result difficult to swallow. Even he and Gao Zhenyang hadn't anticipated her finishing second.

Thinking back to their conversation at the restaurant earlier, Lin Tian realized she must have suspected the outco then. He had planned to confess his feelings before The Parrot Cello Contest, but given her current state, it didn't feel right to bring it up now. For now, it was best to give her space. A blow like this wasn't easy to process, but ti would help heal the wound.

---

That evening, Gan Yanyu returned for dinner, bringing along her study materials. With The Starlight Cup over, they needed to buckle down and prepare for the upcoming art exams. Even soone as talented as Gan Yanyu couldn't afford to slack off entirely—just like how Lin Tian, despite excelling academically, always reviewed his notes the night before mock exams.

After dinner, Lin Tian received a call from Gao Zhenyang.

"Sorry, Mr. Lin, I've been so busy today that I forgot to call sooner," Gao Zhenyang apologized. "I never expected The Starlight Cup to end with a runner-up finish—it's such a sha. But don't lose heart; both you and Gan Yanyu should stay strong. The real battle lies ahead at The Parrot Cello Contest at the end of the month."

Lin Tian murmured affirmations before hanging up. Turning around, he found Gan Yanyu seated on the sofa, engrossed in her music theory textbook. Her expression was focused, seemingly oblivious to everything else—including his phone call.

Lin Tian turned to his phone and scrolled through Weibo. As expected, news of The Starlight Cup results had flooded the platform, sparking lively discussions among netizens.

"Ahh, I knew Bai Xi would win! Her Golden Dance was absolutely srizing!"

"Actually, I thought Gan Yanyu's Cello Concerto in E Minor was better… How could this happen?"

"While Gan Yanyu's performance was impressive, there's still a noticeable gap between her and Bai Xi. Still, second place at 18 is remarkable!"

Most comnts were supportive, though not all were kind:

"Pathetic. All that fanfare, and she still ca in second?"

"Honestly, Gan Yanyu's fans are the most obnoxious I've ever seen online. They hyped her up so much, and look where it got them."

"..."

"Lin Tian."

Gan Yanyu's voice pulled him out of his thoughts.

"Hmm?"

"Do you want to practice a duet?"

"Now?"

Lin Tian glanced at the stack of practice papers on the table—ones he'd prepared to work on later.

"We're solid on instruntal skills. Let's focus on reinforcing foundational music theory instead."

"Oh."

"Besides, duets won't help much with our art exam."

"Okay."

Gan Yanyu nodded quietly, returning to her book. After a while, she stood up.

"I'm going ho to rest."

"So early?"

"I'm exhausted."

"Alright."

"Mm-hmm."

She left, closing the door softly behind her.

Watching the closed door, Lin Tian frowned in confusion. Had she taken the loss to heart or not? Her behavior didn't align with either scenario—it was perplexing.

---

Outside Lin Tian's apartnt, Gan Yanyu didn't head ho. Instead, she descended to the first floor, unlocked the café door, and stepped inside. Flipping on the lights, she stared at the large white carpet covering the floor. Without hesitation, she threw herself onto it—and began rolling around wildly.

"Damn it, damn it, stupid Yanyu…" she muttered under her breath, clutching her head. "How could this happen? How could I lose?"

Her bright eyes shimred with frustration and sorrow. Her mind kept replaying the scene from the competition stage: Bai Xi standing confidently before Lin Tian, asking if he'd listen to her solo. Completely ignoring Gan Yanyu's presence.

At the ti, Lin Tian had declined, saying he wasn't interested. But now…

Now, she had lost. Lost to Bai Xi.

What if Lin Tian decided to approach Bai Xi instead? Bai Xi was beautiful, incredibly talented, and versatile enough to excel in any musical style. It made perfect sense for Lin Tian to gravitate toward her. On TV, husbands stayed loyal to their wives, but partners? Partners drifted apart.

Wrapping herself into a tight ball like a squirrel, Gan Yanyu rolled across the carpet once more.

Ding-dong—

Suddenly, the café doorbell rang.

Gan Yanyu bolted upright, her heart racing. Was it Lin Tian? But that was the front door…

Who would co to the cafe this late? Could it be Bai Xi?

She hesitated, then approached cautiously. Through the glass door, a golden-haired figure gradually ca into view.

"..."

"Hmph, Gan Yanyu, I heard you lost at The Starlight Cup. Tsk tsk, how pathetic. Other than , Nanali, who else could possibly defeat you?" Nanali sneered as soon as the door opened.

Gan Yanyu scowled, reaching to shut the door again.

"Wait, wait, wait!" Nanali quickly jamd her hand into the gap.

Staring fiercely at Gan Yanyu, she declared, "Listen carefully, Gan Yanyu. No matter how badly you lost at The Starlight Cup, don't you dare fall apart. Rest well, eat properly, and show up at The Parrot Cello Contest in top form. The battle for first and second place belongs to us alone."
