“Whimper whimper…”
The sound of crying drifted uncertainly through the black fog, as Ling Mo and his companions cautiously navigated the passage, relying almost entirely on instinct to guide them closer. Despite the passage being narrow and enclosed, the environnt offered no advantage, instead amplifying the echoes of the cries.
No one could say for sure what kind of Creature might be producing the sound, nor could they predict what terrifying thing might suddenly appear as they continued forward. The situation was ripe for wild imagination, particularly for Xu Shuhan, who found herself silently cursing her own creativity. Yet, as the guide, she had no choice but to listen carefully, not daring to miss even the slightest rustle.
“It seems closer,” Xu Shuhan whispered, her eyes fixed on the darkness.
Ling Mo and Yuwen Xuan imdiately held their breath, instinctively widening their eyes to peer into the gloom.
“Whimper…”
The crying did seem clearer now in the darkness.
“We’ve found it…” Yuwen Xuan’s voice carried a hint of excitent. At such close range, who knew if the master of the cries could hear them? In his view, even if they made a noise, as long as it didn’t overpower the crying, they wouldn’t be discovered. So, despite the eerie nature of the sound, it was sowhat useful to them.
“Don’t rush, be careful,” Ling Mo calmly reminded them. His composed reaction served to alert Yuwen Xuan and Xu Shuhan, pulling them back from their respective states of excitent and fear.
Indeed, now was the ti to be cautious… It wouldn’t do to make a mistake at this critical mont. That would be too costly.
“Let’s go,” Ling Mo said to Xu Shuhan after assessing the situation. At the sa ti, he subtly moved forward, naturally positioning Xu Shuhan behind him.
Xu Shuhan, who had been trembling with fear, paused for a mont, but quickly regained her composure. She tugged at Ling Mo’s sleeve and whispered, “Keep going, straight ahead.”
When it ca to simply leading the way, a Female Zombie like Xu Shuhan was best suited for the task. But in such a crucial mont, Ling Mo was the one who could best fulfill the role of Vanguard. With his psychic sensing, he could detect danger in advance. Yuwen Xuan followed obediently, though his occasional fidgeting revealed his impatience.
“Left…”
Just then, Ling Mo’s peripheral vision caught a fleeting shadow. Though it lasted only a brief instant, it sent a shiver down his spine, and his gaze shifted entirely in that direction.
Gone…
The area remained pitch-black, with nothing visible.
Could it be that he was mistaken? No, that couldn’t be… After all, he had been in this pure darkness for quite so ti now. Though it remained pitch black, his eyes had gradually adapted to the environnt. So the appearance of this shadow was like a sudden light spot on a familiar black canvas for Ling Mo. Even if it was just for a fleeting mont, he noticed it imdiately.
“Wait!” He stopped abruptly and asked, “Did any of you see anything just now?”
“What is it?!” Shuhan tensed up imdiately, leaning close to Ling Mo as she asked.
Yuwen Xuan replied, “No, I didn’t…”
“I saw it,” Ling Mo said coldly.
“Huh?” Shuhan’s eyes widened, “What… what do you an? You saw… what?”
“A shadow,” Ling Mo confird. The shadow he saw was actually caught unintentionally, so he hadn’t consciously noted much about it. Even when he tried to recall, it was still just a shadow. But one thing was certain, the shadow was human-shaped…
“Could it be the owner of the footsteps… or the crying?” Yuwen Xuan asked.
At this mont, Shuhan had already followed Ling Mo’s gaze. After a mont of silence, she suddenly looked around with a trembling voice and said, “The crying… the crying is gone.”
With her words, Ling Mo and Yuwen Xuan suddenly noticed that the passage had beco completely silent…
Ling Mo had just seen the shadow, and the crying vanished…
“This is too coincidental… It feels like a signal. Besides, for Ling Mo to see the shadow, it must have happened at the exact mont the black fog between them cleared,” Shuhan finally couldn’t help but speak. Her sense of unease was growing, but at this point, it seed too late to turn back. Would the others agree to go back? Honestly, she herself wasn’t willing…
“But we didn’t see anything,” Yuwen Xuan said. “If it’s a signal, how did the other side manage to target only Ling Mo? And to be honest, I was staring ahead the whole ti and didn’t notice anything. But… it could just be a coincidence. I can’t be sure if I blinked or not.”
At this critical mont, Yuwen Xuan’s analysis was quite practical… “Anyway, the crying is gone now. If the shadow Ling Mo saw was the one making the crying sound, then we have only one thing left to consider-whether or not to follow it?”
His aning was clear… Even if this was a trap, the choice was still in their hands for now. But should they let a cry and a shadow scare them away when they hadn’t found anything yet? That was up to Ling Mo…
“We’ll go,” Ling Mo quickly decided, rubbing his forehead. “Honestly, I have a strange feeling too… But don’t ask , I can’t explain it myself. Since we got here, my abilities have been suppressed, especially my Sensing Ability. The black fog is just one reason; I think there’s another source of Interference here.”
“I see…” Shuhan pressed her lips together and raised her hand, “Ten ters ahead…”
She chose to lead the way quickly… Actually, Ling Mo speaking up was already a form of respect in her eyes… At least he didn’t drag them forward without saying anything when they knew nothing…
“Hurry…”
With urging, Ling Mo and the others swiftly turned into the passage on the left and quickly ran forward. Just as they were about to turn again, a sound suddenly ca from the other side of the bend.
“Plop…”
