She was right about the urgency. But Satou also saw an opportunity he couldn’t waste.

"Go ahead," Satou said quickly. "Start moving north. I’ll cover our tracks here and catch up in two minutes."

Sylvara hesitated, clearly about to argue, but Satou’s tone was firm. "Two minutes. I know how to obscure a trail. You scout ahead, make sure there are no more patrols in the imdiate area. I’ll be right behind you."

"Understood." said Sylvara

Sylvara disappeared into the darkness, her footsteps fading to nothing within seconds.

The mont she was gone, Satou acted.

His Spatial Consumption activated instantly, the black void manifestation opening silently around the first body. The corpse was pulled into the darkness and consud in seconds—matter, energy, mories, all of it absorbed. He moved quickly to the second, then the third, working with efficient speed born from practice.

Six bodies disappeared into the void in under ninety seconds.

The rush of absorbed essence flooded through him—not much, these were just common bandits, but sothing:

[Enhanced Endurance (Minor)] - Absorbed from bandit captain [Tracking (Basic)] - Absorbed from bandit scout [Survival Skills (Basic)] - Absorbed from experienced deserter

Small gains, but gains nonetheless. More importantly, the bodies were gone—no evidence left behind except disturbed ground and bloodstains that could be attributed to any number of forest predators.

Satou quickly scattered leaves and dirt over the blood, breaking up the obvious patterns. Not perfect, but better than leaving clear murder scene evidence.

Then he was moving, following Sylvara’s trail with his enhanced senses. He caught up to her within the promised two minutes, appearing from the darkness behind her.

She turned, relief briefly crossing her features before professional mask reasserted. "Trail covered?"

"As well as possible in the ti we had," Satou replied, which was technically true. "Let’s move."

They set off at a fast pace, putting distance between themselves and the death site. Sylvara didn’t question what he’d done, and Satou didn’t volunteer information.

So secrets needed to stay secret. Even from allies.

After a mile of silent travel, they both continued through the forest, both alert for additional patrols.

"How far to the next potential encounter point?" Satou asked, shifting focus to practical concerns.

Sylvara pulled out a ntal map, her gray eyes tracking landmarks. "There’s a small village about five miles northeast. We’ll need to circle around it—too many potential witnesses. After that, open forest for approximately fifteen miles before we hit the next human settlent."

"Circle adds ti," Satou observed.

"Less ti than explaining to checkpoint guards why we’re covered in blood," Sylvara countered.

Fair point.

They adjusted their route, Sylvara taking point to navigate the detour. Satou followed, his enhanced senses tracking their surroundings for threats while his mind worked through the mission tiline.

Two more days to reach Richard Clay. Assuming he’s still at the monastery. Assuming he hasn’t felt the disturbance Chronus might be sensing. Assuming we can actually get close enough to strike before he portals away.

Too many assumptions. Too many variables.

"Lord Satou," Sylvara said quietly, breaking his tactical analysis. "Question."

"Ask."

"When we reach the monastery—when we actually confront Richard Clay—what’s the plan if he tries to portal out imdiately?"

Good question. One Satou had been considering.

"I’ll use Void Manipulation to disrupt his spatial magic," Satou said. "Create interference in the dinsional fabric around him. Won’t stop him permanently, but should buy us seconds. Enough ti to close distance and prevent escape."

"And if Chronus tries to pull him through the connection?" Sylvara pressed. "Temporal magic might bypass spatial disruption."

"Then I kill him faster." Satou’s tone was flat, certain. "No extended fight. No testing his abilities. The mont I’m in range, I strike with everything—Void Fang through the heart, Soul Strike simultaneously, Existence Erasure to prevent any regeneration. Overwhelming force before he can react."

Sylvara nodded slowly. "Assassination approach. Smart. Most people would try to fight him like a duel."

"Most people aren’t trying to kill soone who has a demon lord’s full power backing him through a soul-link." Satou’s clawed hand flexed unconsciously. "This isn’t about honor or proving strength. It’s about eliminating a target before he knows he’s being hunted."

They moved in silence for another hour, navigating around the village with practiced stealth. Lights flickered in distant windows—normal people living normal lives, completely unaware that two killers were passing within a quarter mile of their hos.

By the ti they stopped again, dawn was approaching. They’d put significant distance between themselves and both the dead bandits and any human settlents.

The new hiding spot was a rocky outcropping with natural coverage—not as concealed as the hollow, but offering better visibility of approaches. Defensive position rather than pure stealth.

Sylvara was doing similar checks, her movents efficient and automatic.

"We’re making good ti," she observed, consulting the sun’s position. "If we maintain this pace and avoid major complications, we reach Valstrath’s monastery region by tomorrow evening. Then one more night of reconnaissance before striking."

"Complications will happen," Satou said, pragmatic. "They always do. Build buffer ti into the tiline."

"Already calculated. Even with delays, we should reach Richard Clay within forty-eight hours." Sylvara settled into a position where she could watch multiple approach angles. "The question is what happens when we do. Best case scenario—he’s alone, unaware, vulnerable. We strike and he dies before Chronus can intervene."

"Worst case scenario?" Satou asked, though he’d already run through the possibilities.\

"He senses sothing wrong before we strike. Becos aware at the last mont. Chronus reinforces the temporal link to enable instant extraction." Sylvara’s expression was serious. "In that case, we get one shot. Maybe two if we’re extrely fast. Then he portals away and we’ve lost our opportunity."

"Then we make the first shot count," Satou said simply. "No hesitation. No holding back. The mont I see him, he’s dead."
