He kept running forward and could make out individual combat now: Kelvin directing goblin defenders against a surge of human infantry. Grimnir fighting beside three other goblins, all four working together to bring down armored soldiers. Gruk’s massive orc form visible even from this distance, his war axe rising and falling with desperate fury.

They were losing. Slowly. Inevitably.

But they were still fighting.

Quarter mile.

Satou carefully set Cassius and Sylvara down, his body protesting the sudden change after carrying them for so long. "Can you both stand?"

"Barely," Cassius admitted, his vampire exhaustion evident. "My mana is completely depleted. I can fight with just my rapier, I can manage."

"My wound has stopped bleeding," Sylvara said, testing her movent carefully. "I can fight. Won’t be at full capacity, but I can kill humans."

"Then rest here for five minutes, then follow when you can move safely." Satou’s fla-like eyes were fixed on the battle ahead. "I’m going in now."

He didn’t wait for their response. His legs, which had carried him and two passengers across five hundred miles, found one last reserve of strength.

Satou began running toward the battle, his eyes scanning the chaotic lee for where he was needed most.

[THIRD LINE DEFENSES - FIFTEEN MINUTES EARLIER]

"Eastern sector reports breakthrough," Kael’mor’s ntal voice ca through, the senior demon warrior’s usual confidence strained. "Human heavy infantry punched through our primary line. Valentine’s forcefield is crushing us—my demons are at seventy percent effectiveness. We’re falling back to secondary positions but losing cohesion."

"Western sector barely holding," a serpentfolk commander reported. "Valentine’s fresh troops are rotating in while we’re exhausted. We can’t maintain this pace."

"Central sector requesting imdiate reinforcents," Kelvin added, his goblin determination evident despite the desperation. "We’re down to forty percent effective strength. Another push will break us completely."

Lyra processed the reports with tactical clarity even as her heart scread at the mathematics of what was happening.

Seven thousand two hundred human soldiers versus her fourteen hundred exhausted, weakened defenders.

The humans could afford to rotate tired troops out, bring fresh fighters in, maintain constant pressure without respite.

Her people couldn’t. Every defender who fell wasn’t being replaced. Every wounded warrior reduced their effective strength permanently.

"Demon Lord Loki, where are you positioned?" Lyra asked through the network.

"Northern quadrant, fighting to prevent encirclent." The demon lord’s ntal voice carried strain. "Valentine’s forcefield has reduced my power by fifteen percent. I’m killing efficiently but there are too many humans. Even a demon lord can’t be everywhere at once."

Lyra pulled up her ntal map of the battlefield, saw the tactical situation with brutal clarity:

Settlent Forces:

37 original settlent defenders (exhausted, many wounded, weakened by forcefield)1,500 Loki reinforcents (weakened by forcefield to roughly 75% effectiveness)Demon Lord Loki (northern quadrant, suppressed by forcefield)Demon Lord Seraphina (fighting Archbishop Valentine elsewhere - unavailable)

Human Forces:

1,200 soldiers from original army (experienced, blessed by Valentine’s forcefield)6,000 fresh reinforcents from Valentine (well-rested, enhanced by divine blessing)Four Heroes (recovering but still combat-capable)Archbishop Valentine (engaged with Seraphina)

The odds were brutal. Even with Loki supporting them and Seraphina tying down Valentine, the settlent was being overwheld by simple nurical superiority combined with divine suppression.

"All sectors, implent fighting withdrawal to fallback positions," Lyra commanded, forcing her voice to remain steady. "Preserve the army. We’re not trying to hold current positions—we’re trying to survive until—"

She cut herself off. Until what? Until Satou returned from five hundred miles away? Until reinforcents that weren’t coming materialized from nowhere?

"Until we can establish better defensive positions closer to the settlent core," she finished instead. "Controlled retreat. Make them pay for every yard, but don’t throw lives away defending positions we can’t hold."

The acknowledgnts ca back through the network, her commanders recognizing the grim necessity even as it felt like failure.

[EASTERN SECTOR]

Kael’mor, the senior elite demon warrior who had taken command after Vex’ahlia’s death, fought with centuries of combat experience, his twin blades moving in patterns that left human soldiers bleeding and dying.

But for every human he killed, three more took his place.

His remaining elite demon warriors fought beside him—down to just nine survivors from the original fifty Vex’ahlia had commanded. Each one worth five human soldiers in combat capability. But even elite warriors got tired. Even supernatural endurance had limits.

And Valentine’s Holy Forcefield made everything harder. Their strength reduced. Their speed diminished. Their corruption magic flickering weakly.

And the humans just kept coming.

"Fall back to secondary line!" he commanded, his purple-tinted skin showing cuts from near-misses, his breath coming harder than it should. "Fighting withdrawal pattern Delta-Three!"

His warriors executed the maneuver with professional precision—half providing covering fire while half retreated, then switching positions, maintaining constant defensive pressure while giving ground.

A human captain led a squad of ten soldiers in a coordinated rush, trying to exploit the movent to break through completely.

Kael’mor t them personally, his swords becoming a blur of deadly motion. He killed the captain with a thrust through his throat, parried two simultaneous attacks from his soldiers, kicked a third man hard enough to crack his sternum.

But while he engaged five humans, another five flanked around and hit his retreating warriors from the side.

One demon warrior went down under the surprise assault—not dead, but wounded badly enough he couldn’t fight effectively.

"JESSICA!" Kael’mor called through the network. "Eastern sector, critically wounded demon! Need imdiate healing or we lose him!"

"On my way," Jessica’s ntal voice responded imdiately, she was already moving toward the position.

But Kael’mor knew the tactical truth: every ti Jessica had to leave her central position to heal critical wounds, the overall defensive coordination suffered. They were being forced to make impossible choices—let warriors die or compromise strategic positioning.

The humans pressed harder, sensing the weakness, committing more soldiers to the eastern sector breakthrough.

Kael’mor killed three more, wounded five, forced back a dozen—

And lost another warrior to a blessed crossbow bolt that punched through demonic defenses even weakened by Valentine’s forcefield.
