An orc warrior—wounded but standing—added gruffly: "We rebuild together. No questions. Just tell us where you need us."

Satou felt sothing tighten in his chest. These people had just survived hell. Had lost friends, family, comrades. Had fought for five days against impossible odds. And their first response wasn’t to rest, wasn’t to ask what they’d get in return—it was to ask when they could start helping.

This was why the settlent was worth defending and everyone acted as one family.

"For the next month, everyone works for our collective survival," Satou said, his voice carrying both gratitude and resolve. "We pool resources, share equally, rebuild together. No individual paynt until we’re secure. After critical infrastructure is restored, we return to normal economic operation."

Kelvin’s voice cut through with a practical question: "What about security? The humans retreated, but they’re still out there. Do we expect another attack?"

"We prepare as if attack could co tomorrow," Satou replied. "That’s why combat-capable defenders rotate between construction and security. We rebuild defenses first, civilian infrastructure second. Walls before workshops. Fortifications before comfort."

Vess’thara spoke, her serpentfolk accent carrying across the field: "The humans suffered eight hundred casualties attacking us. Commander Elric is dead . They’re wounded, demoralized, and have to report failure to the Church. I don’t think they’ll return soon."

"Don’t think isn’t don’t know," Satou corrected. "We prepare anyway."

A goblin near the front raised a hand tentatively. "What about Demon Lord Loki’s forces? Will they stay to help defend us?"

Satou shook his head. "Demon Lord Loki and his fifteen hundred soldiers returned to their territory two days ago, after we confird the human army had fully withdrawn. Demon Lord Seraphina went with them—she has responsibilities in her own domain that she delayed to help us survive. All the reinforcents have departed."

He saw worry flash across so faces and addressed it directly.

The assembly continued for another hour—questions about specific assignnts, concerns about resources, grief counseling schedules that Jessica had organized, morial markers that needed carving for the fallen.

Finally, Satou raised a hand for silence.

"One more thing. Scouts report a large group approaching from the east. Approximately two hundred individuals. Mixed races. They appear to be refugees. They’ll arrive within the next few hours."

Imdiate tension rippled through the crowd.

An orc veteran—one of the survivors from Day Five’s desperate last stand—voiced what others were thinking: "Refugees? We barely have enough food for ourselves. We can’t take on two hundred more mouths to feed."

"We don’t even know who they are," a goblin civilian added. "What if they’re scouts for another army? Or bandits who heard we’re weakened?"

" When those refugees arrive, we’ll hear their story. If they’re genuine refugees fleeing persecution, we accept them. If they’re willing to work, they’re welco. If they need protection, we provide it." Said Satou

"But we’re vulnerable right now," the orc veteran pressed. "Five hundred fifty-nine dead. Four hundred wounded. Loki’s army is gone. Seraphina is gone. How do we know these refugees won’t exploit that weakness?"

"We don’t," Satou admitted. "But we also don’t beco the kind of settlent that turns away desperate people because we’re afraid. That’s what the humans do. That’s what the Church does. We’re better than that."

He looked at Lyra, who nodded and stepped forward.

"Security protocols," Lyra announced in her tactical command voice. "When the refugees arrive, they’ll be t at the outer periter by thirty ard guards from our surviving defenders. They’ll be asked to state their business. If they claim refugee status, they’ll be escorted to a secure assessnt area where we’ll verify their story, check for weapons, and establish whether they pose threat. Only after assessnt will they be allowed into the settlent proper."

The explanation eased so tension. They’d be careful, not reckless.

"Anyone willing to work will be integrated into reconstruction efforts," Satou added. "Extra hands an faster rebuilding. Two hundred workers could cut our reconstruction ti significantly."

He let that sink in. The practical benefit alongside the moral principle.

"Assembly dismissed. Work crews report to your assigned supervisors within the hour. Let’s rebuild this settlent."

—------

[FOUR HOURS LATER]

Satou stood at the outer periter with thirty guards—all from the settlent’s surviving defenders: demon warriors who’d fought through all five days, orc shock troops bearing wounds from the siege, goblin scouts who’d survived impossible odds.

Lyra stood beside him, her golden eyes tracking every detail. Jessica waited behind them with a dical team, ready to treat injuries.

Vess’thara was there as well, leading four of her surviving serpentfolk warriors. They’d lost Chief Skar in the champion duels, lost dozens more in the brutal fighting, but nineteen serpentfolk had survived to see victory. Now they stood guard, protecting the settlent they’d bled for.

The refugees were... pitiful.

Two hundred thirty-seven individuals, Satou counted with his enhanced perception. Mostly goblins (about one hundred twenty), with significant numbers of orcs (forty-eight), serpentfolk (thirty-six), so demons (nineteen), and even a few humans (fourteen).

They moved slowly, exhausted, many wounded. So carried injured companions on improvised stretchers. Children clung to parents. The elderly struggled to keep pace.

They wore tattered clothing, carried pathetic bundles of possessions, and bore the unmistakable marks of people who’d fled in terror.

As they reached speaking distance, the column halted. A goblin male in his forties—lean, scarred, one eye missing—stepped forward as apparent leader.

He bowed deeply to Satou.

"Demon Lord Satou " the goblin said formally, his voice rough from disuse. "My na is Vex. I lead what remains of Thornwood Village, Riverside Camp, and the Eastern Hollows. We... we seek asylum. We have nowhere else to go."

Satou studied the goblin carefully. His remaining eye showed exhaustion, grief, and desperate hope in equal asure.

"What happened to your settlents?" Satou asked, though he suspected he already knew.

Vex’s remaining eye filled with pain. "The humans. The Church army. They marched through our territory fifteen days ago. Four thousand soldiers under Commander Elric."

He swallowed hard, struggling to continue.

"Thornwood Village was first. Seven hundred goblins, peaceful settlent. We had treaty with local human rchants, paid taxes to avoid persecution. Didn’t matter. The Church army arrived at dawn, declared us ’demonic corruption,’ and attacked. We tried to fight. We tried to surrender. They killed everyone who couldn’t flee."
