What could they do? He was the head of the gate guards now. Powerful and influential. It was hardly their place to ddle.
...He’d offended An Changyu yesterday, and today he was already being made to suffer for it... A glance at the duty roster today revealed he’d been assigned to night watch for the entire next month.
It was a classic thankless, grueling assignnt!
Who wanted to be out here in the middle of the night, feeding the mosquitoes?
But there was nothing he could do. Might makes right, and the man was his direct superior. He had no choice but to obey.
’I just hope Master Zhou keeps his word and finds a way to get transferred out of the city defense fast...’
Sun Peng thought with a sense of resignation.
He felt like he’d been caught in a disaster he didn’t deserve...
An Changyu, long accustod to the greetings from those around him, wore a calm expression as he strode out of the main gate.
But just as he lifted his foot, a sudden, unprecedented wave of terrifying dread instantly washed over him!
The color drained from his face. On pure instinct, he shot backward, simultaneously grabbing a constable who was speaking to him and yanking the man in front of him as a shield!
The next mont...
SQUELCH!
The constable didn’t even have ti to grunt as a bloody hole was punched through his body.
But An Changyu’s expression twisted in horror. He looked down and saw sothing protruding from his own chest...
It was covered in blood, but it glinted with a faint blue light in the surrounding torchlight.
’This is...’
Upon seeing it, An Changyu’s face contorted in panic. His first instinct was to shout for soone to drag him back inside the gate.
But in the next instant, a numbing sensation spread from the wound, paralyzing his entire body and rendering him speechless.
THUD. An Changyu collapsed to the ground, his body convulsing as white foam frothed at his lips...
The scene left Sun Peng and the other constables completely stunned.
It had all happened too fast. They hadn’t had any ti to react. One mont, a colleague was pulled away by An Changyu, and the next, An Changyu himself had staggered two steps before collapsing, unable to utter a sound.
After a second of shocked silence...
"ATTACK!!!!!"
A blood-curdling scream jolted everyone at the city gate.
There were Soldiers stationed on the Haiman above.
...They weren’t part of the sa system as the Governnt Office; they were military.
However, they coordinated with the Governnt Office to defend the city.
The cry of "Attack!" instantly alerted the troops stationed on the Haiman. Torches flared to life, and streams of armored elite Soldiers erged, weapons and torches in hand, to face the threat outside the city gate.
Qin Fang, having seen An Changyu get hit, had already retreated and vanished into the shadows.
’...As expected of an Anjin Martial Artist. He actually dodged two of the Poisonous Thorns?’
’No matter. Even though he used an official to block the last one, the Poisonous Thorn pierced through the man’s body. He was still poisoned.’
The entire South Gate was now in chaos. A large number of Soldiers had appeared on the Haiman, facing outward. But when they saw nothing but empty space, they were bewildered.
A man who looked like a general appeared at the city gate. He was a middle-aged commander who frowned and demanded, "Where is the attack?!"
A constable, snapping back to his senses, hurriedly said, "General Li, our City Gate Guard, An Changyu, was just about to leave when he was suddenly attacked. I... That’s why I shouted..."
’An Changyu?’
The general’s brow furrowed.
The man was the City Gate Guard. While not from the sa branch of service, they were colleagues of a sort and knew each other.
He instinctively glanced toward the entrance, then drew in a sharp breath. "Poison?"
In the ti it took to say that, An Changyu’s convulsions had worsened. The white foam at his mouth was now joined by blood streaming from his eyes, ears, nose, and mouth!
"Such a vicious poison!"
the general said in a grave voice, and started to walk over.
But after only two steps, a sudden sense of dread made him freeze. The next instant, he roared, "Everyone, get back!!"
The n were still dazed, but then they saw General Li himself shoot backward. At the sa ti...
BOOM!!!
A massive explosion.
An Changyu’s corpse had just exploded!
The force of the blast was so powerful it made even the thick city gates shudder.
A few unlucky constables who had been examining An Changyu’s body were instantly sent flying, letting out horrific screams.
Sun Peng and a few of the other gatekeepers were luckier... They were behind the other gate door, which shielded them from the blast.
Still, every one of them was left gaping in shock.
But the horror wasn’t over.
A scream of pure, inhuman terror rang out: "Demon, Demon!!!"
Looking closer, they saw that a monster had leaped out from amid the blood and gore of An Changyu’s corpse! It was a round, fleshy ball, with no limbs and no eyes—only a giant mouth filled with sharp teeth.
It opened its mouth and let out a shrill, androgynous shriek. The terrifying sound made several nearby constables cry out and clap their hands over their ears in pain.
General Li, who had reacted the fastest but was still sent flying by the blast, shook himself out of his daze...
He was clearly an Anjin Martial Artist as well, and his Armor had protected him from serious injury.
But even he could only stare, dumbfounded, at the creature.
"A Demon, it’s a Demon!!!"
The constables scread and scrambled backward, forgetting everything else in their terror.
Sun Peng’s heart leaped into his throat as he, too, imdiately backed away.
They stared, transfixed, at the Demon.
But they watched as the Demon, after its long shriek, simply hopped in place twice, then toppled over. It twitched and struggled for a mont... then fell completely still.
But the entire area around the city gate was already in an uproar.
The Soldiers stationed on the Haiman had all co down, and when they saw the monster’s corpse, every one of them went pale!
From a distance, Qin Fang watched the scene unfold, a look of profound shock in his eyes...
’So, it really did appear!’
’Does this an that all the Anjin Martial Artists from that mysterious organization have one of these monsters inside them?’
A chill ran down Qin Fang’s spine!
’...There aren’t many Huajin Powerhouses in True Martial County, but Anjin Martial Artists... there’s still a considerable number of them!’
’...What in the world is that mysterious organization planning?’
Looking at the chaotic scene at the city gate, Qin Fang saw constables already running off, clearly to notify others.
Qin Fang was silent for a long mont, then quietly turned and left...
’He couldn’t investigate the mysterious organization alone.’
’The only way was to get the authorities involved.’
’This was one of the reasons he had specifically waited here to assassinate this man.’
’Of course, there was a chance the man wouldn’t have a monster inside him...’
’But if there was, it would surely grab the County Magistrate’s attention!’
’...This was the City Gate Guard of True Martial County, after all!’
’For a man in his position to have a monster inside him...’
’The Governnt Office would have to be on high alert now, right?’
he thought.
