The gym was a foreign country.
I stood at the entrance of the campus recreation center, the sll of rubber mats and sweat hitting like a physical wall. I had been here maybe twice in my freshman year, both tis leaving after twenty minutes because I felt like everyone was watching struggle with the empty bar.
Today, the System hovered in my peripheral vision, a relentless coach.
[Daily Task: Maintain Physique] Objective: Complete a full-body workout. Current Strength: 12 (Below Average) Reward: 1 Strength
I took a deep breath and swiped my ID card.
The weight room was packed. Guys with arms the size of my head were grunting near the squat racks. Girls in matching sets were doing lunges in front of the mirrors. The old Jake would have turned around and walked out.
But the new Jake had conquered a CEO.
I walked over to the free weights. I didn’t know what I was doing, not really, but the System seed to anticipate my ignorance.
[Skill Assist: Basic Form Correction] [Cost: 5 Points] [Activate?]
I ntally selected Yes.
I had received another bonus in the form of system points, so i figurerd i could get a little reckless. The system’s interface now looked a little different from before it had changed its interface overnight.
Instantly, a faint blue overlay appeared over my vision, highlighting the dumbbells and showing a ghostly outline of proper posture. It was like a video ga tutorial.
I picked up the weights. They were heavy, heavier than I expected, but I followed the guide. Keep the back straight. Engage the core. Controlled movent.
By the third set, my arms were burning. Sweat dripped down my forehead. But I didn’t stop. I pushed through the burn, focusing on the numbers ticking up in my mind.
[Repetition Complete: 10/10] [Set Complete: 3/3]
When I finally racked the weights, I was trembling. But I felt... good. Solid.
I wiped my face with my shirt and caught my reflection in the mirror. I was still skinny, still pale. But there was a flush in my cheeks now. A brightness in my eyes.
[Daily Task Complete: Maintain Physique] [Reward: 1 Strength]
One down. Two to go.
...
"Dude, are you robbing a bank?"
Ethan was leaning against the wall of the upscale nswear store downtown, looking skeptical.
"No," I said, flipping through a rack of dress shirts. "I just need... an update."
"An update? You’ve been wearing the sa three hoodies since orientation."
"Exactly."
The System’s third task was Financial Managent: Buy a New Wardrobe. I had ten grand in the bank. I could afford to look like I belonged in the rooms I was starting to enter.
I pulled out a charcoal button-down and held it up.
[Item Analysis] Style: Modern / Professional Charisma Bonus: 2 Cost: $85.00
"Try it on," Ethan said, clearly enjoying this. "If you’re going to my party tonight, you can’t look like you just rolled out of bed."
I went into the fitting room. The shirt fit perfectly. It made my shoulders look broader, my waist narrower. I added a pair of dark jeans and clean white sneakers.
When I stepped out, Ethan let out a low whistle.
"Okay," he said. "Who are you, and what have you done with Jake?"
I looked in the three-way mirror. The guy staring back didn’t look like the invisible kid anymore. He looked like soone who had secrets. Soone who had potential.
"Stop f***ng with ," I said, handing the card to the cashier.
The total ca to $450. A week ago, that would have been a month of groceries. Today, I didn’t even flinch.
[Daily Task Complete: Financial Managent] [Reward: 1 Style] [Charisma Level 2 Bonus Applied: 5% Discount]
My phone buzzed as we walked out of the store.
Sofia: Are you free tonight?
My heart skipped a beat. I stopped on the sidewalk, staring at the screen.
: I have plans with a friend. A party.
I hesitated. Was I really blowing off Sofia Aldridge for a frat party?
The System flashed a warning.
[Decision Point] Option A: Cancel plans. Go to Sofia. (Increases Intimacy, Decreases Independence) Option
B: Keep plans. Maintain boundaries. (Increases Respect, Increases Mystery)
I rembered what she said this morning. Don’t make chase you. But she also respected strength. If I dropped everything the second she snapped her fingers, I beca just another yes-man.
I typed back: But I’m free tomorrow morning. Breakfast?
Three dots appeared. Then disappeared. Then appeared again.
Sofia: 9 AM. My place. Don’t be late.
I let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding.
"Everything okay?" Ethan asked, watching .
"Yeah," I said, pocketing the phone. "Just... managing my schedule."
"Managing your schedule," Ethan laughed, shaking his head. "You’re weird today, Hart. But I like it. Co on. We’ve got a pre-ga to get to."
...
The party was loud.
The bass thumped through the floorboards of the off-campus house, vibrating in my chest. The air slled of cheap beer and perfu.
Usually, I would have found a corner, nursed a drink, and checked my phone until it was socially acceptable to leave.
Tonight, I was wearing my new shirt. I had 1 Strength and 1 Style. And I had the System.
[Daily Task: Social Networking] Objective: Initiate 3 conversations with new people. Current: 0/3
I grabbed a red cup from the kitchen counter.
"Jake?"
I turned. It was a girl from my English lit class. Sarah? No, Samantha.
"Hey," I said, smiling. "Samantha, right?"
She looked surprised that I knew her na. "Yeah. I didn’t know you ca to these things."
"I usually don’t," I admitted. "But Ethan dragged out."
"Ethan’s good at that," she laughed. She looked up and down, her eyes lingering on the shirt.
"You look nice."
[Charisma Check Passed] [Attraction: Low -> Moderate]
"Thanks," I said. "So, how’s the essay coming along? The one on The Great Gatsby?"
We talked for ten minutes. It was easy. Effortless. I wasn’t stamring. I wasn’t overthinking. I was just... talking.
[Conversation 1/3 Complete]
I moved through the room. I talked to a guy from the track team about his injury. I talked to a girl in the art program about her exhibit.
People were responding to . They were laughing at my jokes. They were asking questions.
I wasn’t invisible.
I was standing near the keg when I felt a tap on my shoulder.
I turned around.
It was Claire.
She was holding a drink, looking a little flushed. Her friends were nowhere to be seen.
"Hey," she said. "You’re Jake, right?"
My stomach dropped. For years, I had waited for this mont. For her to say my na. For her to look at like I existed.
"Yeah," I said. "I am."
"I think we have a class together," she said, tilting her head. "Econ?"
"Yeah. Econ."
She smiled. It was the smile. The one that used to make my knees weak.
"I’m struggling with the last assignnt," she said, stepping a little closer. "I heard you’re really good at it. Maybe... we could study soti?"
The System flashed a notification.
[Opportunity Detected] Target: Claire Montgory Potential: High Action: Accept Invitation?
I looked at her. Really looked at her.
She was beautiful. She was popular. She was everything I thought I wanted.
But then I thought about Sofia. I thought about the way she challenged . The way she looked at when I solved a problem she couldn’t. The way she touched .
Claire didn’t want . She wanted a tutor. She wanted sothing from because I was suddenly visible.
"I’m actually pretty booked up," I said, my voice calm. "But the TA holds office hours on Tuesdays. He’s really helpful."
Her smile faltered. The light in her eyes dimd with confusion. She wasn’t used to hearing no.
"Oh," she said. "Right. Okay."
"Good seeing you, Claire," I said.
And I walked away.
[Daily Task Complete: Social Networking] [Reward: 1 Social Presence] [Bonus: Self-Respect Increased]
I found Ethan on the back porch. He handed a fresh beer.
"You okay?" he asked. "I saw you talking to Claire. Looked intense."
"It wasn’t," I said, taking a sip. "It was nothing."
And for the first ti in my life, I ant it.
I looked up at the night sky. Tomorrow morning, I had breakfast with a CEO.
Tonight, I was just a guy at a party, but I wasn’t invisible anymore.
I was just getting started.
