We walked back into the ballroom, the heavy oak doors closing behind us.

The transition was jarring. One mont, we were in the cold, quiet terrace plotting a corporate takeover. The next, we were assaulted by the warmth, the music, and the scent of expensive perfu.

Elena’s hand was firm on my arm. She wasn’t trembling anymore. She was radiating a cold, dangerous confidence.

"There," she whispered, nodding toward the center of the room.

Victoria Sterling was dancing with a senator, but her eyes were on us. She saw us return. She saw the way Elena held herself—not like a victim, but like a queen returning to her court.

And she saw .

I t her gaze. I didn’t smile. I just nodded, a silent acknowledgnt of the intel she had leaked. ssage received.

But my mind was still in the past, replaying the mont I had first walked into Sofia’s office.

Flashback: Aldridge Holdings, 4 PM.

The conference room had slled of fear and stale coffee. The executives had scoffed at . "That deal is dead, kid," the man with the thick neck had said.

But Sofia hadn’t scoffed. She had cleared the room.

"You’re either very bold," she had said, leaning against the heavy oak table, "or very reckless."

"I’m interested in you," I had replied.

It was the mont everything changed. The mont I stopped being a student trying to get laid and started being a player in her world. I had proven my value not with charm, but with intelligence. I had saved her from an ambush.

End Flashback.

Now, standing in the Sterling ballroom, I realized I was doing the sa thing for Elena.

I wasn’t just her date. I wasn’t just her student. I was her weapon.

"Thorne is watching," Elena murmured.

I followed her gaze. Marcus Thorne was standing near the bar, gripping a fresh glass of scotch. He looked pale. He was talking to the Provost, his gestures sharp and angry.

He saw us. His eyes narrowed.

He expected Elena to be broken. He expected her to be fleeing the party in tears. Instead, she was standing in the center of the room, looking radiant.

"Let’s give him a show," I said.

The orchestra began a new song. A waltz.

"May I?" I asked, extending my hand to Elena.

"I thought you promised the second dance to ," she said, a playful glint in her eye.

"I keep my promises."

We stepped onto the floor.

I wasn’t a great dancer. My [Stamina] and [Coordination] were decent, but I hadn’t bought the [Ballroom Dancing] skill.

But tonight, it didn’t matter. The [Shadow Tuxedo] made move with a fluid grace I didn’t possess. And Elena... Elena was leading as much as I was.

We moved together, a single unit of defiance.

"He’s terrified," Elena whispered as we spun. "Look at him."

I glanced over her shoulder. Thorne was staring at us, his face a mask of fury. He knew we knew. He knew his leverage was gone.

"He’s wondering if I’ve already called Victoria," I said.

"Have you?"

"Not yet. I want him to sweat."

"Good," Elena purred. "Let him sweat."

The song ended. We held the pose for a second longer than necessary, chest to chest, eyes locked. The room applauded.

As we walked off the floor, a figure blocked our path.

Victoria Sterling.

She wasn’t smiling. She looked at Elena, then at .

"You two look... cozy," she said, her voice cool.

"We’re celebrating," Elena said smoothly.

"Celebrating what?"

"Survival," I said.

Victoria’s eyes flicked to mine. She saw sothing there—the confidence, the lack of fear. She realized the dynamic had shifted.

"Interesting," she murmured. "Thorne looks like he’s about to have a stroke. What did you say to him in the library?"

"Just discussed so... market trends," I said.

Victoria laughed. It was a genuine sound, sharp and delighted.

"You really are dangerous, aren’t you?" she said. "I like that."

She stepped closer to , ignoring Elena for a mont.

"My offer still stands, Jake. If you ever get bored of academia... I have a lot of problems that need solving."

"I’m not bored yet," I said.

"Pity." She turned to Elena. "Dean Vance. Lovely dress. Try not to spill anything on it."

She walked away, leaving a scent of vanilla and power in her wake.

Elena watched her go, her jaw tight.

"She wants you," Elena said.

"She wants an asset," I corrected.

"No," Elena said, turning to . "She wants you. And she hates that I have you."

She took my hand.

"Let’s go," she said. "I’ve had enough of these people. I want to go sowhere... reckless."

"The Iron Horse is closed," I said.

"I don’t want a bar," she whispered, leaning close. "I want you. In my bed. Now."

The System flashed.

I looked at her. The Dean was gone. The woman was here.

"Let’s go," I said.

We walked out of the ballroom, past the reporters, past the valets.

Thorne watched us go from the balcony, his glass empty.

I didn’t look back.

I had won the battle. I had saved the grant. I had conquered the Dean.

But as we got into the car, I knew the war was far from over. Thorne was wounded, not dead. And Victoria Sterling was just getting started.

But for tonight?

Tonight, I was the King.
