Wednesday, 2:00 PM. Vanguard Holdings Headquarters.

The boardroom on the 50th floor was a theater of war disguised as a corporate eting space. The long mahogany table was polished to a mirror shine. The city sprawled out beneath the floor-to-ceiling windows, a kingdom waiting to be ruled.

I stood in the back corner, officially listed as a "special consultant to the Interim CEO." I was invisible to most of the billionaires in the room, just another suit blending into the shadows.

But I wasn’t watching the city. I was watching Richard Sterling.

He sat near the head of the table, his face pale, his eyes darting nervously around the room. He looked like a man who hadn’t slept in days. He kept checking his phone, waiting for ssages that would never co.

Victoria sat at the head of the table, a picture of absolute serenity. She wore a charcoal grey suit that looked like armor.

"Let’s call this eting to order," Victoria said, her voice cutting through the low murmur of the room. "We have one primary item on the agenda today. The formal transition of the CEO position."

Richard cleared his throat and stood up. His hands were shaking slightly, but he forced his voice to project.

"Before we vote," Richard said, looking around the table, "I believe we need to address the crisis currently unfolding on the university campus. The Sterling Innovation Center is a PR disaster. Students are rioting. Construction is halted. This is a direct result of Victoria’s... aggressive and alienating leadership style."

He looked pointedly at Arthur Davis, who was sitting across from him.

"We need a leader who understands diplomacy," Richard continued, his voice rising. "Soone who can build coalitions, not burn bridges. I propose we delay this vote and open the floor to alternative candidates."

He sat down, a smug, desperate look on his face. He waited for the chorus of agreent. He waited for Arthur Davis to second the motion.

The silence in the room was absolute.

Arthur Davis didn’t look at Richard. He looked at his hands, folded neatly on the table. Then, slowly, he looked up and t my eyes in the back of the room. I gave him a single, barely perceptible nod.

Davis stood up.

"I disagree with Richard," Davis said, his voice booming across the room.

Richard’s head snapped toward him, his eyes wide with shock. "Arthur, what are you doing?"

"I am speaking for the good of this company," Davis said coldly, refusing to look at Richard. "The protests on campus are a result of Marcus Thorne’s corruption, a ss that Victoria has been tirelessly cleaning up. Victoria stepped into a crisis and stabilized our stock. She has shown decisive, unwavering leadership."

Davis looked around the table at the other board mbers—the ones I had visited.

"I move that we end this debate," Davis said. "I move that we vote imdiately to confirm Victoria Sterling as the permanent CEO of Vanguard Holdings. And I second my own motion."

"Thirded," said Senator Hayes, another man whose secrets were currently sitting on an encrypted drive in my pocket.

"Fourthed," said the next compromised mber.

Richard stood up, his chair scraping violently against the floor. "You can’t do this! Arthur, we had a deal! You know what I have!"

"You have nothing, Richard," Victoria said softly.

The words hit him like a physical blow. Richard looked at Victoria, then at Davis, and finally, his eyes found standing in the shadows.

The realization washed over him. The empty van. The deleted files. The sudden betrayal of his closest allies. He realized he hadn’t just been outplayed; he had been completely dismantled.

"All in favor of confirming Victoria Sterling as CEO?" Davis asked.

Every hand in the room went up. Except Richard’s.

"Unanimous," Victoria said, a cold, triumphant smile spreading across her face. "Thank you, gentlen. Now, as my first act as permanent CEO, I am calling for an imdiate internal audit of Richard Sterling’s finances, specifically regarding a shell company known as Blue Heron Holdings."

Richard collapsed into his chair, burying his face in his hands. It was over.

The King was dead. Long live the Queen.

Victoria stood up, buttoning her jacket. "eting adjourned. Security will escort Richard to his office to collect his personal effects."

As the room cleared out, the billionaires whispering excitedly among themselves, Victoria walked over to .

"You delivered," she said quietly.

"I always do," I replied. "Now, it’s your turn."

Victoria reached into her pocket and pulled out a heavy, black keycard. It didn’t have a logo or a magnetic strip. It looked like a solid piece of obsidian.

"Sub-basent level 4," she said, handing it to . "The elevator in my private office is the only one that goes down there. You have one hour, Jake. Find out what my father and Thorne were building in the dark."

I took the card. It felt quiet heavy, pulsing with a strange, cold energy.

"One hour," I agreed.

I walked toward the private elevator in hurried strides. The corporate war was over and the real secret was about to be uncovered, and I was the one lifting the veil.

The elevator descent felt like it took an eternity. The digital display ticked down past the parking garages, past the maintenance levels, deep into the bedrock beneath the Vanguard tower.

When the doors finally slid open, there was no grand lobby. Just a narrow concrete hallway lit by harsh, flickering fluorescent lights, ending in a massive steel vault door.

I walked up to the door. There was no handle, just a biotric scanner and a slot for the obsidian keycard.

I slid the card in. The scanner flashed green, and heavy locking chanisms echoed through the concrete hall like gunshots. The steel door hissed, breaking a hertic seal, and swung open
