The wind rustled Chen Yuan’s hair.

He squinted, sniffing the damp, fishy air drifting from the water’s surface.

"It stinks a little, and it slls like fish."

"I sll it too, but it’s okay. You can cover your nose with your clothes, like this."

Jiangg Ning didn’t seem cold. The zipper of her down jacket was open, and she was thoroughly enjoying the feeling of freedom as the wind blew against her. She had never felt more relaxed; all her worries were forgotten.

She pulled up a part of her jacket, covering half her face. Her voice ca out muffled, "This way, you can’t sll the stink."

"Oh, right." Chen Yuan nodded vigorously, thinking it was a great idea. He moved closer to Jiangg Ning and, under her strange, furrowed-brow gaze, pulled up a corner of her jacket and pressed it to his cheek. "Not only does it not stink anymore, but it’s fragrant and blocks the wind."

Looking at him, Jiangg Ning covered her mouth and let out a few soft laughs, her eyes sparkling.

The two of them were so close, their actions filled with a veiled intimacy. Every glance, every movent, could stir ripples in their hearts.

"Are you cold?" Jiangg Ning tilted her head, her voice gentle.

"No, it just feels like the wind is really strong."

"Oh..."

Jiangg Ning suddenly took a few long strides forward, her jacket slipping from Chen Yuan’s hand. She turned around to stand in front of him, grabbing the hem of her down jacket and opening it wide to shield him.

They were even closer now. If she looked up, her nose would touch his.

"There, not cold anymore, right?" Jiangg Ning’s voice was gentle as she spoke casually. Such a simple sentence was sohow filled with infinite doting affection, like an older sister ticulously caring for a childish little brother. "Lower your head a bit, and the wind won’t hit you."

As she spoke, the wind lifted the hair resting on her shoulders, making it dance lightly. Three or four ters away, a streetlight illuminated a rust-spotted bench.

Looking back, there was only pitch-black darkness, as if the night had swallowed half the city. Further on lay a desolate wilderness where few people ever tread.

At least, for now, there was no one else here. Just the two of them.

It felt as if they were alone in the world, with only each other for company.

Chen Yuan truly felt his heart flutter. He felt that Jiangg Ning’s embrace would feel incredibly safe right now, making him want to hug her, just for a mont.

Just once.

’A mory I could cherish for a long, long ti.’

But Chen Yuan gave up on the idea. Instead, he helped Jiangg Ning tighten her jacket.

"Okay, I’m not cold anymore. You shouldn’t catch a cold either."

"Then let’s keep walking. I haven’t been for a walk here in a long ti, maybe a month or two ago. I always feel so relaxed when I co here, especially this ti."

"Who did you co here with before?"

"Um... a good friend."

"Male or female?"

"A female, of course. Chen Yuan, why would I co here in the middle of the night to eat and then take a walk with a guy? That’s sothing only couples do."

"Right. I think so too. It’s sothing only *we* can do together." Chen Yuan was satisfied with her answer.

"..."

Jiangg Ning’s lips curved into a barely perceptible smile. She didn’t say anything more and seed to return to her cool and aloof state, walking leisurely on her own ahead of Chen Yuan.

After a while, without turning her head, she suddenly asked, "I’m a little curious. If you hadn’t co to Lanjing, if we had never t... would we have just continued our online relationship forever?"

"No, we’d have to et eventually. We couldn’t just keep calling each other ’baby’ through a screen every day."

"Calling each other what?"

"’Baby,’" Chen Yuan said, not thinking anything of it. "When we used to talk on the phone, that’s what we called each other every day."

"...I didn’t hear you clearly. The wind is a bit loud." Jiangg Ning turned around.

"I said, when we used to talk on the phone, didn’t I call you ’baby’ every day?"

"Mhm, mhm!"

Jiangg Ning nodded, then suddenly curved her lips into a smile and walked a few steps forward, not wanting Chen Yuan to see her expression. ’If he saw beaming like this, I’d die of embarrassnt.’

’Why do I like that nickna so much?’ Jiangg Ning herself didn’t know.

’I’m twenty-six years old, yet I like being called such a mushy nickna by a young guy like Chen Yuan.’

’Ugh~’

Chen Yuan paused for a mont before realizing she was acting a little strange. He hadn’t been speaking quietly just now, so how could she have not heard him?

So, he caught up to her and carefully studied her expression.

"Why are you suddenly staring at ?"

"It’s nothing."

"Hmph..."

Jiangg Ning pouted and quickened her pace again.

’She’s shy!’

’She must be shy!’

Chen Yuan saw it clearly. It was the first ti he had seen such a coy, pouting look from Jiangg Ning.

They continued their walk for nearly an hour, long enough for the food in their stomachs to be completely digested. During this ti, Chen Yuan and Jiangg Ning talked about many things.

They talked about their online relationship, their real lives, and school.

It felt just like their phone calls, where they never ran out of things to talk about.

It was a great feeling. There was no need to hide their true thoughts. They could reveal everything to each other, and she wouldn’t judge him. She would notice and praise his strengths, and even his flaws seed to beco endearing qualities.

In an era of fast-food romance, the probability of eting soone willing to pursue a pure, old-fashioned love was unbelievably low.

If it weren’t for Jiangg Ning’s identity, Chen Yuan really wanted to brag to his friends about eting a girl like her.

He was so happy he could burst.

They walked from the riverside back to the street by the restaurant. It was nearly nine-thirty, and they hadn’t reached the car yet. As they walked, Jiangg Ning’s eyes suddenly lit up, and she pointed to a spot around the corner.

"They’re selling sugar-roasted chestnuts."

"I’ll go buy you so."

Chen Yuan walked straight to the small stall. In the cold wind, a yellow and red flag with the words "Roasted Chestnuts" on it hung askew. The vendor was an old man wearing a leather cap.

"How much for a bag?"

"20!"

"I’ll take one. I want the freshly roasted ones."

"Sure. Don’t you worry, young man, they’re piping hot. Just finished the first batch."

As the vendor spoke, Jiangg Ning walked over. She had her hands stuffed in her pockets; as the night grew later and the temperature dropped, her hands were getting too cold to move freely.

The two of them had just co to stand together, shoulder to shoulder.

The old man in the leather cap looked up and said in surprise, "Well now, you two are a couple, aren’t you?"

"Ahem—"

Chen Yuan felt an inexplicable sense of satisfaction and cleared his throat. ’Now *this* is a guy who knows how to talk,’ he thought. ’Unlike that person in the clothing store who called her a "stepmother." Wasn’t that just a classic case of low EQ?’

"A handso man and a beautiful woman!" The vendor gave a thumbs-up as he handed over the bagged sugar-roasted chestnuts. "Here you go. My goods are guaranteed to be sweet."

"Thank you, sir."

Chen Yuan took it with a smile, then took Jiangg Ning’s hand and placed the bag in her palm.

Jiangg Ning’s frozen hand instantly felt a scorching heat. She held the small bag, opened it, and picked one out, her slender fingers applying a bit of force.

CRACK! The chestnut split open, revealing the golden-yellow flesh, which looked incredibly tempting.

Jiangg Ning gently peeled it, pinched the nut between her fingers, and held it to Chen Yuan’s lips with an indescribably thoughtful and gentle gesture.

"For you."

"Okay."

Chen Yuan lowered his head and took it in one bite.

"Good boy~"

Unexpectedly, Jiangg Ning actually reached out and patted his head! It was exactly the kind of thing an older sister would do.

Chen Yuan froze, feeling the pat on his head.

He blinked, then reached up, caught Jiangg Ning’s hand, and brought it down.

And in that mont, their hands were joined.

In the end, neither of them spoke. She clutched the bag of chestnuts and slowly walked forward, tacitly accepting Chen Yuan’s action. He, in turn, squeezed her hand a little tighter.

"Your hand is pretty soft, Jiangg..."

"Don’t talk at a ti like this."

"Okay."

THUMP-THUMP!

Jiangg Ning’s heart began to race. The sensation of his hand was so clear—Chen Yuan’s hand was warm and strong, filling her with a powerful sense of security.

At twenty-six years old, nine months after her birthday, she had unlocked the achievent of holding hands with a guy for the first ti. She had never dared to imagine such a thing before.

Ever since their online relationship began, her life seed to be filled with ups and downs, and all of it was because of the eighteen-year-old Chen Yuan by her side.

...

They were about to reach the car.

At this mont, Jiangg Ning looked up and gazed at the side of his face for a few seconds.

The sign for the riverside restaurant was still lit, and diners were walking out the door. Two stone-carved lampposts stood on either side, but all of it was a blur.

In her eyes, there was only Chen Yuan.

Jiangg Ning suddenly wanted to say to him:

’Chen Yuan, I’m so looking forward to our future together.’

But she didn’t say it.

She just smiled and said, "I’m so happy."

...

"I’m gonna die..."

In Fengting District, Jiangg Yao clutched her phone, unable to accept her sister’s near-perfect triumph.
