“What did you say?”
In the temporary military encampnt of Goldenrod in Transylvania, Colonel Fraser, who had just returned here from Crimson Castle, was shaken awake from his sleep.
Gropping amid haziness, he heard the anxious face of the communications soldier relaying so dire bad news.
This instantly dispelled all of Fraser’s drowsiness, prompting him to leap from his cot.
“Wolf People have entered East Prussia and destroyed three of our outposts and two villages?
Where’s the news from?
Is it accurate?”
The Colonel’s stern questioning made the communications soldier straighten his spine involuntarily as he loudly reported:
“The news was sent back by the Witch Hunters patrolling the Transylvanian border.
They witnessed the burning battlefields and the Skeleton Army marching through the war fog across the border.
Instead of rashly crossing the border, the Witch Hunters sent the ssage back to the Adventurer Guild.
Then, under the orders of Governor Murphy, the intel was relayed to Pioneer Fortress and to us here.
Colonel, Marshal Loren might have already taken action.”
“The attacked Malo Town is twice as far from Pioneer Fortress as it is from us here!
Even if the Marshal knows about it, he’s unable to organize imdiate support.”
Fraser’s mind contained the layout of the entire East Prussian front line.
Glancing over the map and putting on his coat, he reprimanded:
“The area through which the Wolf People have broken through was previously guarded by the Border Defense Force, and even though reinforcents from the Pioneer Corps cadets have arrived after the soldiers were summoned here, they are still understaffed.
The military fortress that the Marshal was building nearby isn’t completed yet, they lack firepower suppression and have no experience in battling the undead!
What’s worst is that the end station for the steam railway being constructed in Banks City is there.
There are many defenseless workers and laborers, and once they are surrounded by the Skeleton Army, they will fall apart swiftly.
Those damned curs have truly picked an excellent place.
Convene the officers imdiately!
We must rush to their aid now.
The road to the battlefield through Andma Hills is mostly plain, and we can reach there before the situation deteriorates to its worst…”
“Colonel!
Orders from Pioneer Fortress!”
Just as Colonel Fraser had been formulating an action plan in his mind, a second communications soldier burst into the tent, shouting:
“Marshal Loren orders us to imdiately head to the conflict battlefield to maintain the front line.
The Pioneer Corps Cavalry has already departed, but they need at least six hours to reach the battlefield.
According to the real-ti information provided by the Marshal, the n of the 7th are already exchanging fire with the Jackal Warlocks and their Skeleton Army.
But that unit has too many recruits.
They might not be able to withstand the impact of the Wolf People, nor hold out for six hours, and once they’re beaten, the route towards Banks City will be unobstructed.
There are a full two hundred thousand people in that city!”
“No need for more, imdiately sound the call to muster the soldiers and prepare to depart.”
Fraser, his expression grave as water, decisively issued the command.
After sending the communications soldier to relay the orders, he then showed a trace of worry within the tent.
From the current information, the number of Wolf People, even counting the Skeleton Army, didn’t seem too great, but the route they chose to break through was really cunning, striking precisely at the most vulnerable region in the Pioneer Corps’ defense.
This led to Marshal Loren, who had recently focused on constructing the East Prussian fortress group, being caught sowhat off-guard.
Can this entire situation truly be explained by the cunning and luck of the Jackal Warlocks?
Fraser narrowed his eyes.
He felt that there was sothing off about this highly precise assault operation—the intelligence and organizational capabilities required seed to be beyond what the Wolf People should possess.
“Ding”
At that mont, the Calculating Pearl in Colonel Fraser’s hand emitted a delicate vibration.
He looked down to find a communication request from a woman he had marked as “Miss Beverly”, which made him sowhat resistant.
After a second of deep breaths, the Colonel activated the communication, and Governor Milian’s voice, tired and strictly business, erged:
“I’ve just received the front line battle report.
Considering that the Pioneer Corps and Transylvania have already ford a nominal alliance, if you need it, we can provide a rapid response force to head to the East Prussian border battlefield.
An external detachnt of the Cadman People’s Army, with the code na ‘Rushing River Knights Group’, nearly three hundred strong, is ready to go, and the mounted Witch Hunters on the border have also been mobilized.
Their station is even closer to the battleground than you are, if permitted, they could reach the battlefield within three hours.”
“This is an internal matter for the Goldenrod Kingdom, Governor.”
Colonel Fraser responded in equally officious tones:
“We can handle these nuisances; we don’t need your assistance.”
“Is this an irrational decision based on personal pride or the prestige of the Pioneer Corps?”
Milian sighed and said:
“You have no knowledge of the combat thods of the Jackal Plague Warlocks or the exponential combat model of the Skeleton Army.
Throwing lives at it will only make things worse.
Moreover, you don’t have to worry about this affecting the face of the Pioneer Corps or yourself, because the current commander of the Rushing River Knights Group is Miss Biqi.
She is a Knight of the Goldenrod Kingdom and, both morally and logically, she can join in the battle to defend her own country with her comrades.”
