The Being That Was Run Over

(Ah… did I just do it…?)

Right now, it’s clear that my car hit sothing, and moreover, I ran over it with full force.

I’ve often heard stories about accidents happening right after delivery, but I never thought my own car would be the one in such a situation.

However, I’ve been in accidents with motorcycles before, so this isn’t my first ti, and I’m not shaken by the incident. Yeah, this is the ti to stay calm. Don’t panic, don’t rush—can’t be a scaredy-cat here.

So, being the calm person I am, I check on the two of them.

“Are you two okay?”

“Y-yeah.”

“I’m fine, but…”

Hmm, Serai-san seems fine. But Nina-san, who was driving, has an unusually shaky voice.

“S-sorry… um, my bad.”

“It’s okay. You did well not to panic and swerve the wheel. Good job, good job…”

Nina-san seems unusually tense, so I gently praise her.

Yeah, on the left side is a steep slope. If the guardrail hadn’t stopped us, we might have fallen into the river below.

“So, do you know what we hit?”

“It was a goblin!”

“Or maybe a monkey…?”

But here, Serai-san and Nina-san’s opinions differ.

“Huh, which one…?”

“The goblin just suddenly fell from above!”

“……”

When I press further, Serai-san insists it wasn’t a mistake, while Nina-san, perhaps unsure, stays silent.

“Hmm, well, I’ll go check. Nina-san, turn on the hazard lights and pull the car to the side.”

“Y-yeah…!”

The accident site is a winding single-lane road.

On the right side of the road is a steep cliff reinforced with concrete, and on the left, though there are trees, beyond the guardrail is a steep slope. This isn’t an area with nearby houses, and it doesn’t seem like we hit a person, as the two suggested.

“Alright, you two stay in the car.”

As I step out from the back seat, I imdiately hear a loud chattering above.

Looking up, far above the concrete-reinforced slope, I catch a glimpse of sothing moving through the trees like a monkey, followed by soone chasing it.

(Hmm, what’s that…?)

But the view is obscured by thick branches and backlighting, making it hard to see clearly.

Then, a car passes by, honking aggressively as if to say, “What are you doing here?!” Distracted by that, when I look up again, both figures are gone.

“Muu, this isn’t a good spot. The visibility is terrible. Alright, Red Sli!”

Yeah, if I saw soone parked in such a poorly visible spot, I’d be mad too.

So, for now, I have Red Sli collect the thing bleeding and twitching on the asphalt, then store it in the cargo area.

“Huh?! You brought it with you, Egetsu-san?!”

“Yeah, this spot’s no good. Let’s move to a less obstructive place.”

After moving to a decent parking spot with a stone monunt and a vending machine, we take a closer look at everything.

“We just bought this car… sorry about this, Egetsu-san.”

“No, no, it’s fine, Nina-san-san. I bought a used car so it wouldn’t be a big loss if it got wrecked during a stampede. More importantly, I’m glad we didn’t hit a person, and most of all, I’m relieved neither of you got hurt.”

Yeah, this is the mont to show how little I care about the car being damaged.

“It just fell out of nowhere. There was no way to avoid it.”

“So, what did we end up hitting…?”

“Alright, let’s all take a look.”

Getting out of the car, I open the back and check the being wrapped in Red Sli, which had been patiently waiting.

“A goblin… but a bit small for one, no?”

“Yeah… Ah! So it was a goblin after all. It had hair on its back, so I thought it was a monkey.”

The being, having been run over, is pretty grotesque, but being wrapped in the semi-transparent Red Sli tones down the gore.

Still, both of them seem completely unfazed by such a grueso sight.

“Hmm… If this is the sa individual I glimpsed earlier, then this might be a mountain goblin—a goblin adapted to mountain life, moving like a monkey.”

““A mountain goblin??””

“Yeah, the one I saw was swinging through the trees like a monkey. Look, this one has shorter legs and longer arms compared to the goblins we know. And the thick body hair, like it’s wearing a straw coat, suggests it’s adapted to cold mountainous areas.”

““Huh~…””

After hearing the explanation, the two of them stare intently at the mountain goblin’s corpse.

Hmm, goblins might be more versatile and diverse than I thought. Maybe sowhere out there, there are aquatic goblins or tropical goblins too.
