Weapon Banter

"Mm-hmm, for your first ti making sothing, I’d say it turned out pretty well, wouldngt you?"

Pleased with the finished product, I nod in satisfaction at my own work.

"Eh~? You’re already done? What, lem see, lem see… Wait, what is this? It’s just a leather strap. Isngt it supposed to be a bow or sothing??"

But when Serai-san cos over to check it out, she makes a dissatisfied face upon seeing the finished product. Still, I waggle the thing in my hand at her and ask, What do you think this is?

"No idea… Crap, what is that thing?"

"Mm, well, this is called a sling. A throwing strap for stones."

Visually, it’s kinda like a big leather eyepatch. But since it’s made from super-giant boar leather, it’s super durable. Even if we swung it around with all our strength, it probably wouldngt snap that easily.

"Throwing stones…? So, what, just regular rocks?"

"Nah, nah, Serai-san, dongt underestimate plain ol’ rocks. History even calls it the Stone Age for a reason—rocks were humanity’s first weapons. I get why you’d think they’re not much, but if we used this thing now? It’d be terrifyingly powerful."

Yeah, even a normal thrown rock can kill soone if it hits the wrong spot. And since we’ve been superhumanized by dungeon power, it’d be even worse.

But since the weapon itself is just a plain rock, it’s hard to feel any real weight to it.

Still, power and weight are totally different things. Even in the Old Testant, when David took down the giant Goliath, it wasngt with so holy sword or treasure blade—it was with a sling like this.

And even a full-plate-armored knight would die if a heavy, hard rock was dropped on them from a high cliff.

When it cos to ranged weapons, bows and arrows tend to stand out, but in an ambush in a valley, rocks have the highest killing potential. You see it a lot in Romance of the Three Kingdoms too. Though, well, those might’ve been pretty big boulders mixed in.

"Ohhh. Then lem try it out, gim."

"Wait, wait. If you test it in the yard and put a hole in the house wall, we’re screwed. So let’s save the testing for when we go to the mountains, ’kay?"

"Tch~! Put on hold, huh?"

"You done? That the ranged weapon yo were making?"

Oh, Nina-san, who’d been helping clean the main house, must’ve finished up and co over.

"Yep. It’s called a sling—a throwing strap."

"Looking forward to testing it, then. …But, y’know. I’ve been thinking about fixing that crowbar o’ mine too."

Nina-san studies the sling with interest but seems preoccupied with her damaged crowbar.

"Hmm, the crowbar, huh?"

"It’s all bent outta shape, right? Feels like it’s gonna snap any day now, scares ."

"I see. Even though it’s made of steel, tal fatigue could make it break eventually."

"Right? But I like it, so I was hoping there’s sothing we could do about it~"

As we’re talking, Serai-sangs face lights up with an idea, and she dashes off to the shed—only to return with a chainsaw, for so reason.

"Hey hey, Shizu, how about this?"

"Ehh~? What’s that…?"

Serai-san tries to hand her the chainsaw, but Nina-san recoils with a disgusted look.

"Hmm. That said, while a chainsaw might look like a powerful weapon, it’s actually really impractical."

"Eh, really??"

"Yep. Look closely—the engine part near the handle is heavier than the blade, right? That makes the balance awful. To use centrifugal force for power, the weight needs to be at the tip. Plus, a high-speed rotating tal blade isngt ant to be slamd into things. If sothing like a crowbar deflects it, the blade or axle’ll get wrecked easy."

"Right? And since it runs on fuel, ya can only use it so much. Plus, this thing… makes a helluva racket, dongt it? I aingt keen on drawing a whole horde o’ monsters again…"

Ah, right, that too. During the second wave of the Dungeon Stampede, we got sward because of all the noisy refugees following us. What a nightmare.

"Tch~! No good, huh? Thought it’d work…"

"Well, even though chainsaws are iconic weapons in gas, they’re actually pretty awkward to use in real life, Serai-san."

As we chat in the yard, Gramps shows up.

"What’re ye lot doing? Not heading to the mountains today? If not, could ye make so charcoal fer ?"

"Ehh~. Oh, hey Gramps! You fixed that hoe before, right? You still got the tools from back then??"

"A hoe…? Ah. Still got ‘em, but what’re ye fixing? If ye clean up after, ye can use ‘em."

"Yesss! Thanks, Gramps! Then, Crap, let’s use blacksmithing to fix Excalibar too!"

"Huh, blacksmithing…"

"Now that sounds kinda fun."

"Alright, anything’s worth a try. Then let’s give blacksmithing a shot!"

"That’s the spirit! Let’s get set up right away!"

And so, we decided to try our hand at blacksmithing to restore Excalibar.
