[Outskirts of Veltharr — Open Field — 8:00 AM]

The field east of Veltharr was wide enough that no one had an excuse to run out of space.

Marcus evaluated it when they arrived.

Alex did too.

Flat terrain with minimal variation — so rocks to the north, tall grass to the south, the main road visible from the west flank. No natural advantage for either side.

Alex’s team on the eastern edge.

No one from the Temple.

Marcus had kept that part.

---

Marcus took off his coat.

The armor beneath — light, for real combat, not ceremonial.

Aurum climbed down from his shoulder.

And grew.

Expanding into his true form with the sa naturalness with which Grim shifted between sizes. One second he was the small dragon on Marcus’s shoulder. The next he was three ters of golden dragon with wings partially extended and eyes evaluating combat situations.

Emily made a small sound.

"He’s bigger than I thought."

"He’s bigger than he looks on the shoulder," Raven confird.

Kira with [Predator’s Sense] active, asuring Aurum’s energy. Her ears invisible but her posture unmistakable.

"Level 71," she said quietly.

**"He went up,"** confird Grim from Alex’s shoulder. His crimson flas looking at Aurum. **"Interesting."**

---

Marcus at the center of the field.

Alex at the center too, twelve ters between them.

"No Fragnts," said Marcus.

"No Fragnts," confird Alex.

"Grim?"

Alex looked at Grim.

Grim looked at Aurum.

**"Aurum and I also have unfinished business from the tournant."**

Marcus looked at his dragon. Aurum lowered his head slightly — confirmation.

"Agreed."

Grim climbed down from Alex’s shoulder.

He expanded.

Not to full Form 2/7 — to sothing in between. One and a half ters.

**"Ready when you are."**

---

Marcus attacked first.

He reached five ters from Alex in two seconds.

Alex moved.

Without [Shadow Step] — no MP, no skills.

Three steps to the right. Marcus’s attack passing twenty centiters away.

Marcus stopped. Turned. Evaluated.

*Faster than in the tournant.*

*Much faster.*

---

[Battle Flow — 2%]

Alex didn’t activate full Battle Flow.

He waited.

Marcus with a combination of three movents — his shoulders indicating the angle, his feet the direction, his hands the timing. Alex read all three before the first one connected.

He blocked the first with his forearm.

He dodged the second inward instead of outward — the sa principle he had used against the Veil on Level Four. Inside the radius instead of outside it.

The third didn’t arrive because Alex was no longer where Marcus was aiming.

Marcus reorganized.

His expression showed that he was trying to analyze his opponent.

*He fights differently than in the tournant.*

*In the tournant he was trying to win.*

*Now he’s not trying for anything.*

*That’s worse.*

---

Aurum attacked Grim.

Not with fire — with mass.

Three ters of golden dragon moving laterally at speed.

Grim didn’t dodge.

He took the impact.

Aurum’s tail connected with Grim’s side — enough to move anything one and a half ters several ters.

Grim slid.

He stopped.

His crimson flas unchanged.

**"Good."**

Aurum looked at him.

Grim looked back.

**"Again."**

---

Aurum opened his wings fully.

The wingspan — six ters from tip to tip. The shadow covering a ten‑ter radius around the dragon.

And he attacked with his wings.

Not a direct hit — air displacent. The kind of attack that doesn’t require contact because the wind generated by dragon wings is strong enough to disorient targets not expecting that chanic.

Grim expected that chanic.

The wind hit him.

His flas flickered.

But his feet didn’t move.

**"Interesting,"** said Grim.

**"The right wing’s reach is twenty centiters longer than the left wing’s. You compensate with the attack angle."**

Aurum stopped.

He was looking at him.

**"It’s not a critique. It’s an observation."** Grim extended his own scythe. **"Try again. I want to see the full pattern."**

---

Marcus had changed tactics.

Offensive magic.

Five projectiles of concentrated energy. Not in a line — in an arc covering different angles simultaneously so that dodging one ant entering the radius of another.

Alex evaluated them.

[Battle Flow — 8%]

Still contained.

He moved forward instead of dodging.

The first projectile — dodged by milliters to the left.

The second — blocked with his left forearm raised as a shield.

The third — Alex was already below its trajectory angle.

The fourth — passed over his head because Alex was too close to Marcus for the angle to work.

The fifth — Alex physically struck it with his palm, deflecting it sideways. The impact burned but not enough to be a real problem.

They ended up one and a half ters apart.

Marcus looking at Alex.

*He struck the projectile with his hand.*

*He deflected it.*

*With his hand.*

"When did you learn that?" asked Marcus.

"It ca on its own."

"Do you practice projectile deflection?"

"I practice not dying when I don’t have skills available." Alex looked at him.

---

Aurum tried the direct attack.

Not with his tail or his wings. With his claws — the most precise form of dragon attack.

Grim let him co.

The claws connected with Grim’s torso — rock and bone giving way slightly under the level‑71 impact.

[Grim HP: 8,000 → 7,200/8,000]

Grim didn’t step back.

He took Aurum’s claw in his own hands — holding it. Aurum trying to pull it back. Grim with Form 2/7’s strength resisting.

His crimson flas looking into the dragon’s golden eyes from thirty centiters away.

**"Your right claw’s maximum pressure is higher than your left’s. Sa as the wing. You have asymtry in your developnt."**

Aurum was looking at him.

**"It’s not a weakness. It’s a characteristic."** Grim released the claw. Stepped back. **"Do you know why you have it?"**

Aurum didn’t answer — dragons didn’t speak in combat, at least not audibly for everyone.

**"Because you constantly compensate. Your left side works harder to match your right."** His flas. **"That gives you endurance that your right side doesn’t have."**

Aurum extended his wings again.

This ti with his left wing slightly different — adjusting the angle based on what Grim had said.

**"There."** Grim raised his scythe. **"That’s what you wanted to show ."**

---

Marcus and Alex in their fourth exchange.

Marcus had stopped trying projectiles — Alex handled them too well for the range Marcus could safely maintain.

Direct close combat.

And here Marcus was good. Genuinely good — not the tournant level where he depended on others being worse. Real level, built from months of specific training.

His movents more economical. Less telegraphed than in the tournant.

He connected three tis in the fourth exchange.

Alex’s right shoulder. His left side. A roll that took ground.

Real damage.

Alex evaluated it.

*He’s grown.*

*A lot.*

[Battle Flow — 18%]

Not yet.

Marcus in the fifth exchange — faster. The speed he had been holding back now showing itself. Aurum in the field behind adding flank pressure even though he was busy with Grim.

Alex felt the change.

*He’s using Aurum’s movent as visual distraction. Calculating that I’ll divide my attention.*

He didn’t divide his attention.

[Battle Flow — 24%]

He moved toward the flank where Aurum was — the angle Marcus least expected because it was toward the danger instead of away from it.

Marcus turned to follow him.

And in that fraction of a second where Marcus adjusted direction —

Alex had already changed back.

The strike ca from the angle Marcus had left exposed by turning.

Not with all available force. With enough for Marcus to feel it.

Marcus fell one step.

He recovered.

He evaluated.

*He used my own corrective movent against .*

*In the tournant he didn’t do that.*

*In the tournant he found third options.*

*Now he finds fourth and fifth.*

---

Aurum in the air.

He hadn’t tried to fly during the fight with Grim — the field didn’t require height and Aurum was the kind of dragon who preferred solid ground under his claws.

But Grim had pushed him.

Not physically — with the evaluation. With the out‑loud analysis of every attack pattern Aurum used.

For a dragon with developed combat intelligence, being evaluated like that had a specific effect.

You had to change the pattern.

Aurum rose to ten ters.

And attacked from above.

The weight of three ters of dragon in vertical descent was not the sa equation as claws on flat ground.

Grim saw it coming.

He could have dodged.

He didn’t dodge.

He absorbed the impact.

[Grim HP: 7,200 → 5,800/8,000]

The ground under Grim gave way two centiters — the combined impact of Aurum and Grim’s resistance creating a small crater.

Aurum on top of him. Wings extended. Claws holding Grim to the ground.

Grim looking up at the dragon that had him pinned.

His crimson flas unblinking.

**"That was different."**

Aurum looked down at him.

**"You calculated that I wouldn’t dodge."** Grim. **"Why?"**

Aurum’s golden eyes — no verbal answer. But sothing in the dragon’s posture changed.

**"Because in all the previous exchanges I didn’t dodge when I could have."** Grim. **"You wanted on the ground to see how I reacted."**

Aurum held the position.

**"I was evaluating you too."**

Grim activated Soul Prison — not as an attack. As a demonstration. The souls in the field responding, moving into his control radius, forming a pattern that any being with sufficient magical perception could read.

The pattern said: *I can do this.*

Aurum read it.

He released Grim.

He stepped back.

The two of them in the field — the golden dragon and the skeleton with crimson flas — looking at each other.

**"Good,"** said Grim. **"That’s what you wanted to confirm."**

---

Marcus had found his rhythm — not the rhythm of winning, but the rhythm of forcing Alex to show more than he was showing.

Combinations that required a real response. Angles that closed off easy options.

[Battle Flow — 31%]

Alex was still contained.

Marcus noticed it.

"You’re not fighting seriously."

"I am fighting."

"Not seriously." Marcus didn’t stop moving — asking while attacking. "In the tournant you were. In the tournant you were trying to win."

"I’m trying to win now too."

"No." Another exchange. "Now you’re trying for sothing different." Marcus dodged Alex’s counterattack. "What?"

Alex didn’t answer imdiately.

He blocked the next strike.

He counterattacked with the sa movent Marcus had given him — adapted, different but recognizable in its origin.

Marcus received it.

"To see how far you’ve co," Alex said finally.

Marcus processed that.

"And?"

"You’ve co far."

The eighth exchange.

Marcus with everything he had — no reserves, no calculation of conserving energy. Because if Alex wasn’t serious and Marcus still couldn’t reach him, conserving energy was irrelevant.

Marcus’s maximum speed. Maximum power. Maximum coordination.

And Alex —

[Battle Flow — 41%]

He responded.

Not everything. Still not everything. But enough for Marcus to feel the difference between what Alex had shown up to that point and what Alex could show when he wanted to.

The ninth exchange lasted four seconds.

At the end — Marcus on the ground. Kneeling on one knee, his hand on the ground, Alex’s final impact still processing through his body.

Aurum beside him in seconds — the dragon landing next to his bearer, his golden eyes evaluating the damage.

Marcus looked up at Alex.

Alex standing in front of him. With real accumulated damage — the three hits from the fourth exchange, his side still protesting — but standing.

[Battle Flow — decaying]

Marcus took the hand Alex extended to him.

He stood up.

"How much were you holding back?"

"Enough."

Marcus processed that for a second.

Then.

He laughed.

"Alright."

---

Grim returned to Alex’s shoulder.

Aurum returned to Marcus’s shoulder.

The four of them in the field — the two bearers and their companions, the morning sun still low on the horizon, Veltharr visible in the distance.

"You lost," said Grim to Aurum.

Aurum’s golden eyes on Grim.

Aurum looked at him for one more second.

Then he nodded his head.

A small gesture showing respect.

**"Likewise,"** said Grim.
