Emi Aoyama stared at the mountain of fabric burying her bed, a casualty of a full-blown wardrobe ltdown. A sunshine-yellow sundress lay crumpled over a frilly pink blouse. She’d already deed both "too eager." A plain white tee, rejected for screaming ’friend zone ,’ was tangled in the straps of a cashre sweater.

"What does one even WEAR to study with a guy who literally just beca the talk of the entire academy?" Emi muttered to her reflection, holding a sunshine-yellow sundress against herself in the mirror, tilting her head critically as her blue hair antennae twitched with indecision.

Her phone chid with the custom Apex battle the ringtone on her nightstand. She lunged for it, nearly tripping over a discarded cashre sweater and sending three pairs of shoes flying in her haste.

Miyako: Have you picked an outfit yet?

Emi snapped a selfie of her despair amidst the clothing carnage and sent it back with a cascade of crying emojis.

Miyako: OMG girl get it together!

"I know!" Emi wailed to her empty room, throwing her hands up in desperation. She grabbed a frilly pink blouse and held it up to the mirror, tilting her head critically. "Too much? Definitely too much." She flung it across the room with a groan of frustration.

She tried on a simple white t-shirt, examining her reflection with narrowed eyes. "Too boring! I might as well wear a sign that says ’friend zone , please!’" The shirt joined the growing pile of rejects.

After twenty more minutes of fashion agony, Emi finally settled on a soft mint-green sweater that elegantly slipped off one shoulder, paired with a white miniskirt and her favorite ankle boots. She twirled in front of the mirror, watching with satisfaction as the skirt flared out just enough to be playful without screaming desperation.

"Perfect," she breathed, smoothing down the front of the sweater with trembling fingers. "Casual but cute. Studious but still a little sexy. Just the right vibe."

She gathered her sapphire-blue hair into a high ponytail, carefully arranging two strands to fra her face like antennae. A touch of lip gloss, a swipe of mascara, and just a hint of blush completed the look. Her warm reddish-brown eyes sparkled with nervous energy.

"Okay, Emi," she told her reflection, taking a deep breath. "It’s just studying. With Satori. Who happens to be super hot now. And famous. And Natalia’s stepbrother." She groaned, dropping her forehead against the mirror with a soft thunk. "No pressure at all."

Her phone chid again, making her heart jump.

Natalia: What ti are you coming over?

Emi: Heading out soon! Need to bring anything?

Natalia: Just yourself.

Sothing about Natalia’s terse reply made Emi pause, but she shrugged it off. Natalia was probably just in her usual pre-exam stress mode. That girl took academics so seriously.

Emi grabbed her backpack, carefully stuffing in her color-coded notes, handmade flashcards, and a tablet loaded with the latest Vance-Ishiguro Model study guides. She took one last look in the mirror, adjusted her sweater to show just a hint more collarbone, and skipped toward the living room.

Her father sat in his favorite armchair, scrolling through news on his datapad. The afternoon light caught the silver threading through his dark hair, a testant to years of hard work at Port Tsurumi’s logistics division. Their apartnt was small but cozy, always slling faintly of her mother’s cooking and the jasmine incense her father liked to burn on weekends.

"Off to your study group, sweetie?" he asked, looking up with a warm smile that crinkled the corners of his eyes. "You look very nice."

Heat rose to Emi’s cheeks, coloring them a delicate pink. "Thanks, Dad! Yeah, just eting up with Natalia and... Satori-kun." She fiddled with one of her blue locks, twisting it around her finger nervously.

"Satori-kun, huh? Is he the young man from that video everyone at work is talking about? The one who caused quite the stir at the VHC Gala?"

"That’s him!" Emi felt her blush deepen to crimson. "But he’s really nice! And super smart too! Like, crazy smart with all these deep insights about Aspects and stuff!"

"I could tell from that speech he gave," her father said, nodding thoughtfully as he leaned back in his chair. "Brave boy, standing up to those legacy types like that. Not many would have the guts, especially at his age. Made quite an impression on so of our regulars."

"You watched it?" Emi asked, genuinely surprised, her distinctive antennae-like strands bobbing enthusiastically as she tilted her head. "I didn’t think you followed Hunter news that closely!"

"Everyone’s watched it, honey. It’s all over the feeds." He chuckled, setting his datapad aside with a knowing smile. "Got shared around the restaurant faster than free beer coupons on Friday night."

Emi fidgeted with the strap of her backpack. "I just really hope I don’t make a complete and total fool of myself. What if I say sothing super dumb about the material? Or trip over my own feet? Or accidentally call him by the wrong na?"

Her father’s expression softened, his eyes filling with the unconditional love that had always been Emi’s bedrock. "Emi, you’re the brightest, kindest girl I know. That smile of yours lights up every room you walk into. Any boy would be lucky to study with you." He winked conspiratorially. "And if he doesn’t think so, well, your old man still knows how to throw a punch from my dock-working days."

"Dad!" Emi laughed, the tension breaking as she crossed the room to give him a quick, tight hug and a kiss on the cheek. The familiar scent of his aftershave cald her nerves. "I’ll be fine. I’m just nervous because... well, you know. They live in the Veridian Hills."

"Just be yourself," her father advised, patting her arm gently. "That’s always been more than enough."

Emi nodded, feeling a little steadier. "Bye, Dad! Love you!"

"Love you too, sweetie. Be safe. And have fun." He smiled. "You deserve it after all your hard work."
