The silence lasted exactly three heartbeats.

Then the Crucible Arena lost its collective mind.

Twenty thousand people surged to their feet like a single organism responding to electric shock, their voices rging into a roar that rattled the ancient volcanic stone beneath their seats. Signs waved frantically above heads, half declaring allegiance to the Onyx Hounds and half proclaiming devotion to the Scarlet Phantoms. Soone in the student section ignited purple and crimson flares that sent smoke spiraling toward the artificial sky do.

Up in the broadcast booth suspended high above the arena floor, Park Hyun-Jae slapped both hands against his desk hard enough to make his co-anchors flinch.

"Are you kidding right now? Are you actually kidding ?" His voice cracked on the last word, raw with genuine shock. "That was the single most intense tag match I’ve witnessed in seventeen years covering this tournant, and it ended with both teams unconscious on the platform!"

Sterling Weaver leaned into his microphone, his usual composed deanor shattered. "The Ice Queen just created a dragon. An actual dragon made of ice and telekinetic force fifteen feet tall, and the Crimson Cot countered with ten lightning marionettes converging into a killing lance." He paused to catch his breath, his hands gesturing wildly. "Then they both knocked each other out with simultaneous hooks like this was a street brawl instead of a formal duel!"

Isaiah Foster pulled up the replay footage, freezing it at the mont Natalia’s fist connected with Reyna’s jaw while Reyna’s knuckles crushed against Natalia’s cheek. "Look at this. Perfect timing. Perfect form. Both fighters completely spent their mana reserves, running on pure spite and stubbornness. Neither one willing to yield first."

"And this is only day one!" Hyun-Jae’s voice climbed an octave. "Tomorrow we have individual competitions across six different categories. If this is the quality we’re seeing from the tag matches, the solo events are going to be absolutely nuclear!"

Down on the arena floor, dics in white coats rushed onto the platform while Emi broke from the competitor’s section before anyone could stop her. Her healing aura flared bright green as she reached Natalia first, dropping to her knees beside the unconscious fighter and channeling energy into Natalia’s depleted body. The crowd noise swelled even louder when they recognized the blue-haired healer who’d been trending alongside Satori for weeks.

Professor Hanae watched the dics work with an expression that balanced amusent and concern. She caught Carn’s eye from the sidelines, and her fellow instructor raised that half-empty flask in a mock salute before taking a long drink.

Braxton appeared beside Carn, his synth-cigarette hanging from his lips as he observed the carnage. "Thoughts?"

"My girl just created a dragon and used it as a missile weapon. Your boy absorbed enough electricity yesterday to power Valoria for a month." Carn grinned behind her flask. "I think we’re doing pretty good."

"They’re going to kill themselves before graduation."

"Probably. But they’ll look incredible doing it."

In the VIP section overlooking the arena’s eastern edge, Seraphina Vance sat with her hands folded precisely in her lap while her mind catalogued every detail of what she’d just witnessed. Her sister Celeste stood two rows down among the Onyx Hounds’ supporters, her silver-white hair catching the afternoon light as she leaned over the railing with obvious concern.

Commander Graves materialized at Seraphina’s elbow like smoke condensing into human form. "Ma’am. Thoughts on the match?"

"Kuzmina shouldn’t be capable of manifesting constructs of that complexity at eighteen. The mana expenditure alone should’ve killed her." Seraphina’s voice remained perfectly level despite the chaos erupting around them. "Yet she stood up afterward and tried to keep fighting."

"The ring helps regulate her output. The gloves my sister gave her enhanced conductivity by fifteen percent." Celeste Vance’s contribution ca from below, her periwinkle eyes still tracking the dics as they tended to Natalia. "But mostly she just refused to lose."

Seraphina’s gaze shifted to her sister, noting the way Celeste’s hands gripped the railing hard enough to whiten her knuckles. "You care about these people."

"They’re my guild. My team."

"Your friends."

Celeste turned to et Seraphina’s eyes directly, her posture straightening into the perfect composure their mother had drilled into them both. "Yes. My friends."

The words hung between them like a challenge, and Seraphina recognized the shift in her sister’s deanor. Three months ago, Celeste would’ve denied such emotional attachnt, would’ve frad relationships in tactical terms and political utility. Now she stood publicly claiming friendship with the Stray Dog’s pack of disasters, her expression daring Seraphina to object.

Seraphina filed this developnt away for later analysis and returned her attention to the arena floor, where Emi’s healing was already showing results. Natalia’s eyes fluttered open, her purple irises glowing faintly as consciousness returned.

The crowd noticed imdiately and cheered with renewed vigor.

Across town in a penthouse suite overlooking New Vein City’s financial district, Marcus Valerius stood before floor-to-ceiling windows with his phone pressed against his ear. His reflection in the glass showed a man in his early fifties wearing a suit that cost more than most people earned in six months, his golden hair going silver at the temples and his sapphire eyes hard with calculation.

"I don’t care what it costs, Dmitri. I want the Nakano boy." His voice cut through the ambient noise of the city below with surgical precision. "Yes, I’m aware he’s currently enrolled elsewhere. I’m aware the Hounds have first claim on recruitnt. I’m also aware that money can overco most institutional loyalties."

He listened to the response from his contact at Aegis Pri, his jaw working as irritation mounted. "Then offer more. Double the standard recruitnt package. Triple it if necessary." Marcus turned from the window and crossed to his desk, where tablet screens displayed real-ti tournant footage and betting statistics. "I don’t care if he’s officially C-Rank. Did you watch him fight my son? Did you see him absorb kinetic energy and convert it to strength? That’s A-Rank minimum utility, possibly higher."

Another pause while Dmitri raised objections about the boy’s late manifestation and questionable background. Marcus’s knuckles whitened around the phone.

"His background is precisely why he’s valuable, you idiot. He’s hungry in ways Julian has never been. He’s fought for everything he has instead of having it handed to him." Marcus pulled up footage of Satori breaking through Julian’s Quantum Disruption with that ridiculous bat, his dark eyes blazing with sothing feral and uncontained. "This boy killed an A-Rank with improvised weapons and survived a Black Gate by making plants rebel against their cosmic gardener. He’s either the next coming of Kaito Ishiguro or he’s the most dangerous fraud in Academy history."

Marcus zood in on Satori’s face, studying the split lip and blood streaking his jaw. "Either way, I want him on our side before soone else gets smart. Make contact through interdiaries. Casual interest only. Feel him out about post-graduation plans, sponsorship opportunities, equipnt upgrades." He paused, considering angles.

"And find out what his relationship actually is with the Kuzmina girl. If she’s leverage, I need to know."
