Stadio Alberto Picco, La Spezia

10:25 PM - Post-Match

The final whistle went and Atalanta’s players stopped moving imdiately, and the relief on their faces was more visible than any celebration as they stood with hands on hips while their breathing was heavy from ninety minutes of defending.

Koopiners exchanged a quick handshake with De Roon before both turned toward the away section and clapped once, and Tolói did the sa with Djimsiti while moving toward the tunnel entrance, and the entire squad filed off the pitch within thirty seconds of the whistle without lingering or celebrating.

The caras followed Højlund briefly as he walked off but the broadcast cut away and stayed on Demien who remained seated on the bench with his right leg wrapped in ice and compression, and a physio stood beside him speaking quietly while gesturing toward the tunnel.

Demien stood slowly with assistance and began walking toward the tunnel entrance, and his right leg moved stiffly while the physio supported his left side, and the limp was visible even though he was trying to walk normally.

Comntary Booth

"Atalanta get the three points," the lead comntator said, and his tone carried acknowledgnt rather than enthusiasm, "but the cost of this victory might be significant with Demien Walter leaving the pitch injured, and the concern on everyone’s faces tells you this isn’t minor."

"Muscle injuries are difficult to predict," his colleague added, "and sotis they show themselves imdiately while sotis the full extent doesn’t beco clear until scans are done, and we’ll have to wait for the dical assessnt though the emotion we saw from Walter suggests he knew sothing was wrong the mont it happened."

"Timing couldn’t be worse with the World Cup break coming," the first comntator continued, "because England’s squad announcent is in days, and if this is serious then his season could be in jeopardy."

Away Dressing Room

10:32 PM

The tunnel was empty when Demien passed through it, and the only sound was his uneven footsteps echoing off concrete walls while the physio walked beside him without speaking, and they reached the away dressing room door where muffled voices ca from inside.

Demien entered first and the room went quiet for a mont as teammates glanced toward him, and several players nodded acknowledgnt while others were already in the showers, and the atmosphere was subdued despite the three points.

He moved to his spot in the corner and sat heavily on the bench while the physio began unwrapping the compression from his leg, and Koopiners approached and tapped his shoulder once without saying anything before moving toward his own locker.

Lookman walked past heading to the showers and squeezed Demien’s shoulder briefly, and the gesture was quick rather than emotional, and Demien nodded once in response before Lookman disappeared into the shower area.

The room filled with the normal post-match sounds—water running, boots being unlaced, quiet conversations—and nobody made the injury the focus of attention because everyone understood that dwelling on it wouldn’t help anything.

Gasperini entered at 10:38 PM and the room quieted imdiately as players turned toward him, and the manager stood near the center of the U-shaped benches with his arms crossed while his face showed fatigue.

"Good result," Gasperini said, and his voice was asured, "and you defended well, stayed disciplined, saw it through, which is what midweek matches require."

He paused and glanced around the room once before continuing.

"dical will assess Walter’s situation properly and we’ll know more after scans," he said, "so until then we prepare for Sunday as normal, and you should recover well tonight because we have a light session tomorrow morning."

That was it, and no extended speech ca while no tactical review followed, and the night was done.

Players resud their routines as Gasperini left the room, and the conversations stayed quiet while everyone showered and changed, and within twenty minutes most of the squad had dressed and begun filing out toward the team bus.

Demien was one of the last to finish because dressing with a stiff hamstring took longer than normal, and by the ti he stood and grabbed his bag the room was nearly empty except for De Roon who waited near the door.

"Bus leaves in five," the captain said, and Demien nodded while limping toward the exit.

Mixed Zone

10:47 PM

The mixed zone was set up in a narrow corridor where journalists stood behind barriers with microphones and recording devices, and Gasperini walked through it alone while his face showed no interest in extended conversation.

"Mister Gasperini, can you tell us about Demien Walter’s condition?" the first journalist asked, and several microphones pushed forward while phones recorded.

"We’ll wait for scans," Gasperini replied without stopping his walk, and he gave nothing further.

"Is he out for the World Cup?" another voice called from behind the barrier.

"I don’t speculate on injuries without proper diagnosis," Gasperini said, and he reached the end of the mixed zone and disappeared through the door before more questions could follow.

The entire exchange lasted twelve seconds.

dia Response

12:15 AM

The first Italian outlets posted their match reports within an hour of the final whistle, and the headlines focused on concern rather than celebration.

La Gazzetta dello Sport:"Atalanta Win But Lose Walter to Injury Scare"

Corriere dello Sport:"Three Points, One Worry: Walter Leaves Injured at Spezia"

Sky Sport Italia:"Gasperini Cautious on Walter Injury Tiline"

The articles included brief match summaries but dedicated most of their word count to analyzing the injury mont, and several embedded the clip of Demien pulling up without contact while speculation remained asured about severity.

English dia picked up the story within two hours as overnight editors recognized the timing with England’s World Cup squad announcent scheduled for Monday, and the coverage was cautious.

The Guardian:"Atalanta’s Walter Injured Days Before England Squad Announcent"

BBC Sport:"Concern Over Demien Walter Fitness Ahead of World Cup"

The Athletic:"Walter’s Season in Doubt After Non-Contact Injury"

Social dia response built gradually through the early morning hours as fans in different ti zones woke up and saw the clips, and the narrative was sympathy mixed with frustration about timing rather than personal criticism.

Comnts focused on the schedule’s intensity and on how muscle injuries happen without warning and on whether the World Cup break would help or hurt his recovery tiline, and nobody attacked him for getting injured because the footage showed clearly that nothing reckless had caused it.

Demien’s Apartnt, Bergamo

3:47 AM

Demien lay on his back in bed with his eyes open while the ceiling fan rotated slowly above him, and sleep hadn’t co despite exhaustion sitting heavy in his body because his mind wouldn’t stop replaying the mont his hamstring had gone wrong.

Beside him Sophia was asleep with her breathing steady and quiet, and she’d been there when they got back from the stadium and had simply stayed without asking if he wanted her to, and the presence was grounding even if sleep remained impossible for him.

His right leg was elevated on two pillows and wrapped in compression that the physio had applied before letting him leave the stadium, and the stiffness had increased over the past hours rather than improving which told him everything he needed to know about severity.

He’d tried lying on his side but the position pulled at his hamstring uncomfortably, and he’d tried on his stomach but that made his leg feel worse, and finally he’d settled on his back where at least the discomfort was manageable even if sleep wouldn’t co.

At 4:12 AM he gave up trying and reached carefully for his phone on the nightstand, and the screen lit up showing seventeen unread ssages and six missed calls, and he scrolled through them without opening most while trying not to disturb Sophia.

His mother had called twice and texted four tis asking him to confirm he was okay, and Marco had sent three ssages about scheduling scans and managing dia requests, and Luca had texted once from Portugal saying he’d seen the clip and to call when he could.

He set the phone down without responding to any of them because his mind was too tired to form coherent replies, and he closed his eyes again while knowing sleep still wouldn’t co.

7:15 AM

Grey light filtered through the bedroom curtains when Demien woke, and he hadn’t realized sleep had finally co while Sophia was already moving around the kitchen, and the sll of eggs cooking reached the bedroom.

His phone showed 7:15 AM which ant he’d slept maybe two hours total, and his right leg felt stiffer than it had when he’d finally dozed off.

He sat up carefully and swung his legs off the bed while keeping weight off his right side, and he stood slowly before limping to the kitchen where Sophia was already plating scrambled eggs and toast at the counter.

She glanced at him once without speaking and set a plate on the small kitchen table before sitting across from him with her own plate, and Demien sat and stared at the food without picking up his fork.

Sophia ate three bites before looking up at him, and her face showed nothing beyond calm attention.

"Eat," she said.

"Not hungry," Demien replied, and his hands stayed flat on the table.

"Eat anyway," she said, and her tone wasn’t sympathetic or demanding, just matter-of-fact.

Demien picked up his fork and began eating chanically because arguing seed pointless, and neither of them spoke further while the comfortable quiet felt better than forced conversation.
