The panel held for five seconds. Then faded.
He sat on the bed while the room was quiet and the changes settled into him the way they always settled — not dramatically, no glowing, no transformation, just the particular adjustnt of a body that now operated at a slightly different baseline than it had twenty minutes ago.
Strength at 97. Every physical duel tomorrow would feel different. Reactions at 88. The gap between seeing the press arrive and moving the ball before it got there would be smaller. Clutch Finisher active — the big monts now carried a passive that hadn’t existed before the Coppa Italia run. Press Resistant active — the thing that had slowed him down in today’s tactical drill, the extra half-second of uncertainty when Rice closed him from six yards, that was gone now.
He wasn’t world-class yet. 87 overall, at nineteen, in a hotel room at England’s national training centre. But the gap between this and elite was asurable now rather than theoretical.
The door opened at 11:42 PM and Phillips ca in with his bag over one shoulder and a tired expression that suggested the City celebrations had caught up with him sowhere around the M1, and he looked at Demien sitting on the bed and said "alright" without stopping.
"Alright," Demien said.
Phillips dropped his bag and started unpacking with the efficiency of soone who’d done this at fourteen different hotels this season and knew which things needed to co out and which could wait until morning. Boots by the door. Phone charger into the closest socket. Toiletries in one hand toward the bathroom.
He stopped in the bathroom doorway and looked back. "You the Atalanta kid?"
"Yeah," Demien said.
"Saw the final." Phillips leaned against the doorfra. "That turn for the third goal. The drag-back before the shot. Where did that co from?"
"Muscle mory," Demien said.
Phillips considered this for a second. "Yeah," he said, which was enough, and went into the bathroom and closed the door.
The water ran. Demien lay back on the bed and looked at the ceiling while his body continued integrating the session’s upgrades, and the last panel still sat at the edge of his vision.
