Fletcher gestured to Ten Hag and the manager took control of the eting with the kind of tactical precision that defined his coaching philosophy.

Ten Hag opened his iPad and connected it to the large screen mounted on the wall, and video footage appeared showing Manchester United's matches from the previous season.

"Our system requires technical midfielders who can defend, create, and score," Ten Hag said without preamble. "Last season we finished third in the Premier League, won the Carabao Cup, reached the FA Cup final. Not terrible but below Manchester United's standards."

The honesty was brutal and refreshing at the sa ti.

"The midfield was our weakest area," Ten Hag continued. "Casemiro excellent defensively but thirty-one years old. Eriksen creative but also thirty-one and his legs are going. Bruno brilliant but isolated, needs support. Scott McTominay works hard but limited technically."

Video clips played showing United's midfield struggles—turnovers in buildup, lack of goal threat from deep, defensive gaps when pressing high.

"We need young, technical, complete midfielders," Ten Hag said, and he paused the video on a freeze fra showing empty space in the right half-space. "Players who can defend, create, and score. That's you."

The screen changed to footage of Demien at Atalanta and with England, and Ten Hag's analysis was detailed and specific.

"You operate best as an eight," Ten Hag said. "Box-to-box midfielder with technical quality and goal threat. Against North Macedonia, your positioning in the half-space created the assist to Saka."

The video showed the exact mont—Demien receiving the ball deep, turning under pressure, delivering the through ball that split two defenders.

「LEGENDARY SKILL REFERENCE」

「Andrea Pirlo — Deep-Lying Playmaker」

「Activated during that sequence」

Ten Hag continued without acknowledging the system panel that only Demien could see.

"Your run from deep created space for the first goal," Ten Hag said, and the video showed Demien's Marseille Roulette beating two defenders before the dipping shot from twenty-five yards.

「EPIC SKILL REFERENCE」

「Marseille Roulette Dipping Power Shot」

「Combination created the goal」

"This is exactly what we need from our eights," Ten Hag said. "Technical security in possession, defensive work rate, goal threat from midfield. You have all three."

He showed more clips—freeze-framing specific monts and explaining how Demien's profile fit United's tactical needs in different match scenarios.

"At Liverpool, you wait two years to compete for a starting spot," Ten Hag said, and the direct shot at their tiline was delivered without naming Liverpool explicitly. "Here, you compete imdiately. We're signing Mason Mount from Chelsea, he'll be competition. But you saw our midfield last season. There's room for you to start contributing from day one."

「Tiline Comparison Detected」

「United: Imdiate competition for minutes」

「Liverpool: Year two target for regular starts」

「PHILOSOPHY DIFFERENCE」

「United needs reinforcent NOW」

「Liverpool building for FUTURE」

The panel dissolved as Ten Hag continued.

"Europa League, you're guaranteed heavy involvent," Ten Hag said. "We need you there from day one. Premier League, you rotate initially but the target is twenty-plus starts across all competitions by season end. If you perform in training how I know you can, you'll play. I don't sign players to sit on the bench."

The statent was delivered with the kind of certainty that made arguing pointless.

Ten Hag pulled up a tactical board on the screen showing United's 4-2-3-1 formation with positions labeled.

"Casemiro as the six," Ten Hag said while pointing to the defensive midfield position. "Bruno as the ten. Two eights operating in the half-spaces. This is where you fit."

He highlighted the right eight position specifically.

"Against teams that sit deep, you provide creativity and goal threat from midfield," Ten Hag explained. "Against teams that press high, you help with progression and press resistance. You're comfortable in both roles. That flexibility is valuable."

Different emphasis from Liverpool's pitch entirely. Klopp had sold emotional connection to Anfield and patient developnt. Ten Hag was selling tactical fit and imdiate contribution.

「Tactical Assessnt」

「United system: 4-2-3-1 with attacking eights」

「Liverpool system: 4-3-3 with box-to-box eights」

「Both suit profile」

「Different tactical roles but equal compatibility」

「OBSERVATION: Tactical fit not the differentiator」

「Decision will depend on tiline and philosophy」

Ten Hag finished his presentation and sat back while waiting for questions.

11:50 AM

Murtough brought the discussion back to contract specifics and Marco took the opportunity to press on details.

"The pre-season tour cap of twenty-one days," Marco said. "What happens if tour logistics require more ti due to sponsor commitnts or travel delays?"

"The cap is firm," Fletcher said imdiately. "Twenty-one days maximum including all travel ti. If tour logistics require more, that's the club's problem. The contract protects the player."

Marco wrote this down before continuing.

"The ten appearance days minimum for sponsors," Marco said. "Is that dostic only or does it include international travel?"

"Primarily dostic," Murtough answered. "If an international sponsor event is required, it counts toward the ten but we minimize those. Most obligations would be UK-based to reduce travel burden."

The answers were clear and favorable, and Marco's notes reflected satisfaction with the comrcial obligations structure.

Image rights discussion ca next and Marco pressed harder.

"Individual boot deals, personal endorsents, social dia content that doesn't use United branding," Marco said while reading from his notes. "Those count toward his twenty-five percent share?"

"Correct," Murtough confird. "Anything that's his personal brand independent of Manchester United branding counts toward his twenty-five percent. If it's United-branded content, that's club revenue and he receives standard appearance fees."

「Image Rights Confird」

「Personal brand deals: 25% to player」

「Club-branded content: Appearance fees」

「Clearer definition than Liverpool's structure」

Marco shifted to the exit clause and his tone indicated this was where negotiation would be difficult.

"Liverpool has an automatic buyout at seventy-five million after eighteen months," Marco said, and he deliberately broke his own rule about not ntioning specific offers because creating pressure was strategic. "Your conditional language is vague. What constitutes 'regular first-team minutes' and what makes an offer 'reasonable'?"

Fletcher's expression didn't change and his response ca without hesitation.

"We're aware of Liverpool's structure," Fletcher said. "Our position is different. We're not building Demien to sell him in eighteen months. The conditional language at eighteen months is our compromise. If he's not playing, we'll listen to offers. But we're not putting an automatic clause that helps competitors."

Ten Hag interrupted and his directness increased.

"I don't plan for players to leave," Ten Hag said. "I plan for them to succeed. If you're worried about exit in eighteen months, maybe this isn't right fit."

The bluntness was characteristic of Ten Hag's reputation, and Marco didn't push further because United's position was clear.

「Exit Clause Comparison — Final」

「United: Conditional, non-binding, favors club control」

「Liverpool: Automatic, guaranteed, favors player security」

「UNITED'S LINE IN THE SAND」

「Will not move on automatic buyout clause」

「Trade-off: Higher wages for less exit security」

12:10 PM — Demien's Questions

Ten Hag looked directly at Demien and his expression was expectant.

"You've been quiet," Ten Hag said. "What questions do you have?"

Demien pulled out his notepad where he'd written the sa five questions he'd asked Liverpool yesterday, and the comparison would be direct.

"Where exactly do you see fitting tactically in your system?" Demien asked.

Ten Hag answered imdiately without consulting notes.

"As an eight primarily," Ten Hag said. "Right side more often than left because your left foot is stronger and you can cut inside from that position. But you have quality to play as a ten against certain opponents when we need more attacking creativity. Versatility is valuable."

「Tactical Role Comparison」

「United: Right eight primarily, occasional ten」

「Liverpool: Left or right eight equally」

「United's role more defined」

「Liverpool's role more flexible」

Demien wrote this down before asking the second question.

"What's the realistic developnt pathway in year one?"

Fletcher answered this one and his response was specific.

"Heavy Europa League involvent from day one," Fletcher said. "That's guaranteed. Premier League rotation in first half of season, increasing minutes second half. Target is twenty-plus starts across all competitions by season end. If you hit that target, year two you're competing for starting spot every week."

「Tiline Comparison — Detailed」

「United Year 1: 20 starts target (all competitions)」

「Liverpool Year 1: Cup rotation, gradual PL integration」

「United Year 2: Competing for PL starts weekly」

「Liverpool Year 2: Regular starter if developnt progressed」

「ASSESSNT: United's tiline 6-12 months faster」

Third question.

"Who am I competing with for the positions you ntioned?"

Ten Hag listed them without hesitation.

"Mason Mount who we're signing from Chelsea," Ten Hag said. "He plays eight and ten. Scott McTominay if he stays, though he might leave. We're looking at one more midfielder but haven't decided who yet. So realistically, you're competing with Mount primarily and potentially one more signing."

「Competition Analysis」

「United: Mount McTominay (maybe) 1 potential signing」

「Liverpool: Mac Allister Szoboszlai Jones Elliott」

「United has LESS competition」

「Clearer pathway to minutes」

Fourth question.

"What happens if I'm not getting minutes after six months?"

Fletcher responded and his answer was similar to Liverpool's approach.

"Six months is too early to judge developnt," Fletcher said. "But if by month six you're training at the level we expect and still not seeing pitch ti, we talk. Erik has that conversation with every player. Communication is important."

Reasonable but not specific, just like Klopp's answer.

Final question.

"What made you specifically want to sign ?" Demien asked. "Why and not another midfielder?"

Ten Hag smiled slightly and the question clearly pleased him.

"You score goals from midfield," Ten Hag said. "We haven't had that since Pogba left. Bruno creates, Casemiro defends, Eriksen controls. But who scores from midfield? Nobody consistently. You do. Both goals Monday were from midfield positions arriving late in the box and from distance. That's rare quality. Complete midfielder who can defend, create, AND score. That's why you."

「Ten Hag's Answer Analysis」

「Identifies specific gap: goalscoring from midfield」

「References Monday's goals as proof」

「Tactical need is genuine, not recruitnt talk」

「Comparison to Klopp's answer:」

「Klopp: ntality and pressing intensity」

「Ten Hag: Goalscoring threat from midfield」

「Both identified different attributes」

「Both answers specific to their system needs」

Demien closed his notepad and looked at Ten Hag.

"Those are all my questions," Demien said. "Thank you for the detailed answers."

Murtough asked if anything else needed clarification and Demien shook his head.
