Monday, August 14, 2023 — Old Trafford, Manchester — 6:45 PM BST

The team bus turned onto Sir Matt Busby Way while evening light caught the red shirts gathered behind barriers outside Old Trafford, and Demien sat near the window with headphones on though no music played because he wanted to hear what was happening outside.

Fans were packed three rows deep behind the barriers holding scarves with shirts with phones recording the bus’s arrival, and so shouted for Bruno while others called for Rashford or Casemiro or Onana, then Demien heard his own na mixed into the noise.

"Walter! Demien!"

It caught him slightly off guard because he knew United fans were aware of him from the transfer plus the USA tour, yet hearing them call his na before he’d played an official minute made the pressure feel different than Atalanta where love ca after performances rather than before proof.

The bus pulled into the stadium entrance so players began stepping down one by one while the noise grew louder, and security kept fans behind barriers though several kids stretched shirts forward with programs reaching toward the players.

Demien followed the squad off the bus when club staff allowed brief interaction, and he paused to sign a United shirt where his number fourteen was printed across the back, then a program, then one phone case that a young girl held out while her father recorded the mont.

A young fan wearing a Rashford shirt told him to score tonight with excitent clear in his voice.

Demien smiled slightly because he knew he wasn’t starting though he said nothing while moving toward the tunnel entrance.

Caras captured the mont because dia crews were positioned around the entrance discussing United’s opener with Ten Hag’s selection decisions with speculation about whether the new signing would get minutes.

He walked into the stadium tunnel with his bag over his shoulder so the noise outside faded into the controlled chaos of Old Trafford’s interior—staff moving equipnt, dia people passing with caras, security directing traffic, the sll of grass mixing with polished floors in the air.

Frad images lined the corridors showing United legends with historic monts captured in photographs that docunted decades of expectations.

The feeling was heavy because he wasn’t walking into a club trying to beco important, instead he was walking into a club where importance was demanded every week without exception.

Manchester United Dressing Room

Inside the dressing room the atmosphere was focused though professional while starters moved through their routines with the quiet efficiency that ca from knowing what this night ant.

Bruno was vocal speaking in short bursts that mixed Portuguese with English while Casemiro sat calmly with boots half-laced, and Rashford remained quiet near his locker as Onana checked his gloves before setting them down carefully.

Varane spoke with Martínez about defensive positioning using hand gestures to illustrate pressing triggers.

Demien saw his shirt hanging on the substitute side where the number fourteen looked smaller sohow than when he’d worn it during pre-season friendlies.

He’d known he wasn’t starting since Sunday when the squad list was posted, yet seeing the shirt placent made it final in a way that knowing hadn’t quite achieved.

He changed without complaint while his Adidas boots went on last, and he tied them carefully before sitting back to watch the starters prepare because studying their routines mattered more than dwelling on his own position.

Ten Hag entered so the room settled imdiately while conversations stopped mid-sentence.

The Dutch manager nad the starting eleven without checking notes. "Onana in goal. Shaw left, Wan-Bissaka right. Martinez and Varane center. Casemiro holding. Bruno and Mount in midfield. Rashford left wing, Antony right, Garnacho up top."

He paused before continuing with final instructions that ca in his clipped accent. "Wolves will be dangerous in transition. They will not dominate possession but they will attack spaces we leave behind. The midfield must not beco stretched. Bruno and Mount press together—Casemiro cannot cover the entire center alone."

His eyes moved around the room. "Wolves are not coming to survive. They will run, fight, and punish careless passes."

Demien listened closely because these instructions might beco his responsibility later if the match required changes.

Ten Hag addressed the substitutes as a group without singling anyone out. "The ga may need control, energy, or different profiles after the hour. Stay ready."

Professional delivery that treated everyone as squad mbers rather than hierarchies.

The starters left for the tunnel while substitutes followed later moving toward the bench as Old Trafford’s noise swelled above them.

Kickoff

The broadcast comntary opened with proper context as both teams took their positions on the pitch.

"Good evening and welco to Old Trafford where Manchester United begin their Premier League campaign against Wolverhampton Wanderers. Erik ten Hag’s side finished third last season and expectations remain high despite a mixed pre-season. New signings Andre Onana and Mason Mount both start tonight, while the sixty-two million pound midfielder Demien Walter begins on the bench."

The second comntator added detail. "Ten Hag’s clearly taking a cautious approach with Walter. Excellent pre-season showings but the manager knows Premier League football is different. If this ga becos stretched we could see him later."

Referee’s whistle blew so the match began with United pressing forward imdiately while the crowd pushed every attack with noise that filtered down to the bench where Demien sat watching carefully.

United started brightly because Bruno looked sharp in the opening minutes while Rashford tried to attack space, yet Wolves sat compact initially without being passive because they waited for turnovers before looking to spring forward.

Demien didn’t just follow the ball from his seat—he studied the distances between United’s lines with Wolves’ pressing triggers with the way their midfield jumped when Bruno received with his back to goal.

Tenth minute showed the pattern clearly when United lost possession in midfield, and Wolves broke with three players sprinting forward against two United defenders before Varane recovered to make a crucial sliding tackle.

The comntator noted the danger. "That’s the second ti Wolves have found space behind United’s midfield. Ten Hag won’t be pleased with how open this looks."

Twenty-third minute brought United’s opener through a fast attacking move where Bruno received between the lines before releasing Rashford into the left channel, and Rashford’s low ball across the box was finished by Garnacho who’d tid his run perfectly.

Old Trafford erupted so the noise level doubled imdiately.

Manchester United 1-0 Wolverhampton Wanderers

"United lead but this has co from transition rather than controlled build-up," the comntator observed. "That pattern could work both ways tonight."

After the goal Wolves beca braver by pressing higher in monts while targeting space behind Mount and Bruno when United lost the ball, and Casemiro was forced into several recovery actions that showed the midfield structure wasn’t quite right.

Thirty-first minute Wolves created their best chance when a turnover in midfield allowed them to break quickly with numbers, and their forward drove into the box before shooting from twelve yards though Onana made a strong save pushing the ball wide.

Nervous applause rippled around Old Trafford.

"Wolves very much still in this ga despite United leading," the comntary team agreed. "The midfield balance isn’t quite there for the ho side."

Near halfti Wolves almost equalized when a through ball split United’s defensive line, and the striker got his shot away under pressure from Martinez though it went narrowly wide of the far post.

Ten Hag stepped forward near the touchline with his expression tight while his arms crossed.

Demien watched his body language from the bench while understanding the problem clearly—the scoreline said United were ahead but the match itself said they weren’t comfortable.

Half-ti whistle blew so both teams walked toward the tunnel with mixed energy.

HALF-TI:

Manchester United 1-0 Wolverhampton Wanderers

Half-Ti

The dressing room was controlled though serious when Ten Hag addressed the tactical issue without shouting.

"We’re leading but Wolves are finding spaces too easily after turnovers. Bruno, Mount—the press must be connected. If one jumps while the other doesn’t cover, they’ll keep escaping into midfield."

He pointed at Casemiro. "You’re isolated too often. The distance between you and Bruno is too big."

His eyes moved to the back line. "Be ready for direct runs. They’re growing confident."

Demien listened from the substitute side while Ten Hag didn’t bring anyone on at half-ti, which ant the manager still believed the current setup could solve itself despite the obvious issues.

The team returned for the second half so Demien walked back to the bench feeling calm though alert because he could see what needed fixing even if he had to wait.

Second Half

The second period started with Wolves pushing harder because they’d seen United’s midfield vulnerability clearly enough to exploit it.

United tried controlling possession yet the rhythm remained uneven while Bruno forced a pass that nearly created a chance though it also nearly sparked a counter, and Mount pressed aggressively but Wolves used one-touch layoffs to escape.

Fifty-fifth minute brought Wolves’ best spell when they won a second ball before driving forward, and the attack forced another save from Onana before a follow-up cross flashed across the box with nobody reaching it.

Old Trafford beca restless because the 1-0 lead felt fragile rather than secure.

"United leading but not controlling," the comntator said. "Ten Hag may look to his bench soon. Demien Walter’s na has been ntioned frequently—the supporters clearly want to see him."

Demien began warming up with other substitutes along the touchline while the crowd noticed imdiately, and a roar rose when he ran past the dugout that made the comntators react.

"Listen to that reception for the new signing! The fans want to see what he can do."

Sixty-third minute United nearly conceded after a sloppy central turnover left Casemiro exposed, and he made a desperate recovery tackle that prevented a clear shot though the danger confird what Ten Hag had been watching.

The Dutch manager turned toward the bench before calling Demien’s na.

65th Minute Substitution

Demien removed his tracksuit top while walking toward the technical area where Ten Hag waited with his instructions prepared.

The stadium noise shifted into sothing sharper though excited because fans understood what was happening, and the comntators focused on him imdiately.

"Here we go—Demien Walter is coming on for his Premier League debut. The sixty-two million pound midfielder from Atalanta who impressed during pre-season. Ten Hag’s chosen this mont to introduce him with United leading but lacking control."

The fourth official prepared the board showing Mount’s number coming off while Demien’s number fourteen went on.

Blue text appeared privately in his peripheral vision.

「MATCH MISSION ACTIVATED」

「Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers」

«Premier League»

«Complete 88% pass accuracy»

«Create 2 chances»

«2 successful dribbles or progressive carries»

«Contribute directly to goal»

« 50 MP base»

«BONUS: Score or assist on debut»

« 5 SP»

The panel faded while Ten Hag stepped close with his instruction delivered in two sentences.

"Control the space. Then hurt them."

Demien nodded once.

The board went up so Mount jogged off while receiving applause, and Demien stepped onto the pitch where his Premier League debut began with United leading 1-0 though the match hung dangerously open.
