Chapter 104 - Happy New Year

Because he was at ho, Chen Ran slept very soundly today. With his alarm clock turned off, he wasn't woken up by the neighbor's dog barking until past eight o'clock in the morning.

Opening his eyes and seeing it was light outside, the feeling was rather comfortable.

Chen Ran didn't linger in the warmth of his blankets. He glanced at the ti, pulled back the covers to get up, and found a tracksuit in his suitcase to put on.

He had bought these clothes a long ti ago, but during his working days, he never had the ti to wear them.

When he went out of his room, he saw his sister already washing up. He asked in surprise,

"You're up this early?"

"When do I ever get up late?" Chen Yao grunted.

"Probably in junior high. On weekends, Mom had to finish cooking and call you before you'd get up."

Two black lines appeared on Chen Yao's forehead.

"How long ago was that!"

Chen Ran smiled and stood to the side to brush his teeth.

After finishing washing up, Chen Ran planned to go out for a run.

He hadn't gone running in a long ti, let alone had the ti to wander around the small town. Since it was the rare occasion of the New Year, it was just right to relax a bit.

Chen Yao also tagged along. She frequently exercised at school and was used to running, which was why she got up so early today.

There weren't many cars in the morning, so the siblings ran along the roadway together.

They ran all the way to the edge of the town before slowly strolling back.

Chen Ran was panting heavily and it took a good while before he cald down. Chen Yao said from the side, "Brother, you need to exercise more."

Chen Ran ignored her. He went to buy a bottle of water and handed it to Chen Yao, asking as they walked:

"You're singing in a bar now. What are your plans after your new song is released online? To beco a singer?"

Chen Yao shook her head and said, "Singing is just a hobby. I won't beco a singer."

"Why?" Chen Ran asked.

Chen Yao said, "Singers are too busy, and I don't sing that well either."

Chen Ran felt Chen Yao was being modest. The bar where she sang had quite strict requirents. For her to pass ant that both her voice and singing skills were very good.

That boss was a professional; it was unlikely he would misjudge this.

"It's fine not to. If you really went to beco a singer, Mom and Dad would probably be on edge all day long," Chen Ran said.

Chen Yao asked, "Just like Naonao's parents?"

Chen Ran took a sip of water and said, "Pretty much."

"Brother, I'm very curious, how did you start dating Zhang Xiyun?" Chen Yao blinked her eyes.

Chen Ran smiled and said, "Just keep being curious. You'll know when you find a boyfriend in the future!"

"So stingy!" Chen Yao muttered.

While the brother and sister were walking, there was suddenly a bang behind them, making them both jump in fright.

Turning their heads to look, they saw a child holding a firecracker, looking at them with a grin. He made a funny face and quickly ran away.

Chen Yao stomped her foot in anger, but Chen Ran found it amusing.

When they were young, they looked forward to the New Year imnsely. Aside from the essential red envelope money, they could also play with firecrackers.

They liked it a lot when they were little, but now they found it a bit annoying.

He sowhat understood why people looked at them with such angry eyes when they set off firecrackers back in the day.

The brother and sister returned ho, ate a casual breakfast, and then followed their father, Chen Junhai, to go shopping.

Although most of the New Year's goods had been bought in advance, many food items still had to be bought on the morning of New Year's Eve.

After finishing lunch, Chen Yao went to hang out with her friends. Chen Ran didn't have many friends, so he sat in front of the computer and pondered.

"What's wrong, didn't finish your work?" Seeing his son still busy with work at this ti, Chen Junhai asked casually.

Chen Ran shook his head and said:

"It's a program the satellite TV channel wants to produce. If I want to go to the satellite TV channel, I have to write a relatively good program. If it succeeds, I can enter the satellite TV channel after the New Year. If it doesn't, I'll have to keep waiting."

As for how long he would have to wait, there was no fixed number; anyway, it was just waiting for an opportunity.

Alternatively, Chen Ran could also choose to go to a satellite TV program crew to be an ordinary planner, but the starting point wouldn't be as good.

"I don't understand these things of yours either, but if there's an opportunity, work hard at it."

Chen Junhai obviously didn't understand these things, but since it concerned his son's work, he didn't disturb him. He let Chen Ran go busy himself in his room, so as to avoid making noise and disturbing him later.

Chen Ran wasn't going to write the proposal imdiately right now; instead, he was gathering reference materials.

The program he was going to produce now was no longer for a local station, but for the satellite TV channel.

The target audience demographics were different, requiring careful consideration.

Not only did he need to look at his own satellite TV channel's information, but he also had to take a look at the other satellite TV channels'.

This wasn't a local channel. The competition was no longer programs from their own TV station, but from other satellite TV channels.

The entire viewership market was only so big, and every station was fighting for viewership ratings. If one gained, another lost; the competition was extrely fierce.

Looking at competitors' information could also broaden his train of thought.

Regarding the satellite TV program, Chen Ran only knew it was the late-night slot, but didn't know which day of the week it was.

Friday, Saturday, and Sunday were probably unlikely. Chen Ran focused his research on the late-night slots from Monday to Thursday.

Late-night programs were indeed sowhat difficult.

Compared to the pri-ti slots on Fridays and Saturdays, where programs easily broke 2% or 3%, these workday late-night slots were much worse.

The highest was only around 0.7%. Occasionally, an eye-catching episode could reach 0.9%, but there were none higher.

The program contents were also weird and bizarre. There were storytelling ones, antique appraising ones, and even boxing ones...

Chen Ran only had one feeling: They really know how to play it wild.

Currently, the one with the highest viewership rating was Tomato Satellite TV's ‘Magic Cute Babies’, starting at ten o'clock at night. It had babies under five go up to show off their talents, and through voting, a magic cute baby was selected.

The program had plenty of selling points, reaping a peak viewership rating of 0.9% and dominating the number one spot in the late-night slot all year round.

This made things sowhat difficult for Chen Ran. He rarely watched late-night programs.

In the past, he slept relatively late, but most of the ti he was playing on his phone—either reading novels or playing gas. Who still watched TV?

Now that he had to produce sothing for this ti slot, he was sowhat at a loss.

Fortunately, ti was very abundant, so he wasn't too anxious.

Quite early in the afternoon, his parents started cooking. Chen Ran didn't stay in his room the whole ti. After all, he ca back for the New Year; staying busy with work the whole ti wasn't appropriate.

Seeing his parents busy, he also went to help.

They ate their New Year's Eve dinner quite early here. Around five o'clock in the afternoon, the continuous sound of firecrackers could be heard outside.

After the al was ready, Chen Junhai also gave Chen Ran a string of firecrackers, telling him to go out and light it.

It was a local custom to light firecrackers before eating the New Year's Eve dinner. Chen Ran had forgotten the specific origin story behind it, but since it was passed down, they just followed it.

He didn't smoke, so he took a lighter from his father before running out.

After lighting it, he threw the firecrackers outside and directly ran into the house, closing the door. Outside, there was a burst of crackling and popping sounds, so loud he couldn't hear anything else.

Only when it died down did he return to the dining table.

Looking at the table full of food, Chen Ran could feel the strong flavor of the New Year.

He also received a ssage from Zhang Fanzhi: "I've returned to Lin City, just got ho."

It was just a single ssage, yet Chen Ran felt his mood lighten, and he was also inexplicably jumping for joy.

The two chatted for a while, and it was ti to start eating.

Chen Ran typed out a line of text: "I miss you a little."

But after hesitating for a mont, he deleted all the words and typed out four new words: "Happy New Year."

After waiting for a mont, Zhang Fanzhi also replied with a ssage:

"Happy New Year."
