Chapter 123 - Indeed Very Polite
When Chen Ran was selecting candidates, he naturally read through their detailed profiles.
Xu Yang had previously hosted a variety show. The program's viewership ratings were poor, and after it was axed, he had been continuously hosting the interview program 'Youth'.
Director Wu Tao shook his head and said, "I don't know either. He spoke quite politely, just saying he had no ti, and even apologized."
Is he really unable to get away?
But that shouldn't be the case.
Even if his fa wasn't bad, and he took on so endorsents or whatever, just recording one episode of a program wouldn't waste much ti.
This program might require preliminary preparation; it would be best to be able to speak off-script, but if he couldn't, there was a teleprompter. Couldn't he even spare a single day?
"Director Wu, you go ahead with your work, I'll go make a trip there." Chen Ran thought for a mont and still felt it was better to try and win him over.
He had watched Xu Yang's program; his verbal style was very distinct. Moreover, since it was inherently a talk show and he already brought so fa with him, he was considered the most suitable candidate.
"Jot down his phone number first." Director Wu Tao read out Xu Yang's number.
Chen Ran noted down the number. He originally wanted to call first, but then he thought that since Director Wu was rejected when he called, a planner like himself calling over probably wouldn't be of any use.
"Liu Lang, please print a copy of the program materials for . Oh, right, both episodes' scripts are needed."
Chen Ran instructed his assistant, who was considered an intern. He was about the sa age as Chen Ran; following the crew ant doing so miscellaneous tasks.
After Liu Lang got the materials sorted out, Chen Ran went to find Xu Yang.
He found soone to ask around and learned Xu Yang was in the broadcasting studio recording a program, so he hurried over.
When Xu Yang ca out, he saw a young and handso figure blocking his way. He was very unfamiliar and didn't recognize him.
Xu Yang frowned and said, "You are?"
Chen Ran smiled and said, "Hello Teacher Xu Yang, I am Chen Ran, currently serving as the chief planner for the Thursday late-night slot program."
"Chen Ran, Thursday late-night slot?" Xu Yang raised an eyebrow, carefully looked at Chen Ran, and said:
"The Director called earlier, and I also told your director I had no ti. Right now my schedule is a bit busy, I have no ti to do another program, so I am very sorry."
Chen Ran listened quietly, waiting until he finished speaking before taking out the materials and saying:
"Teacher Xu Yang, I have watched your program, and your style is extrely suitable for our program, so I ca over with sincerity to invite you. Why not take a look at the proposal first, understand the program content before making a decision."
Xu Yang looked at Chen Ran. He originally wanted to refuse directly, but held back, reaching out to take the materials from Chen Ran's hands.
He looked at it back and forth for less than two minutes, then said to Chen Ran:
"I have read the materials, it's a very good program. However, I am very sorry, I truly cannot spare the ti. You guys go find soone else."
After Xu Yang finished speaking, he walked away first alongside the female host beside him.
Chen Ran stood in place and looked at Xu Yang's back, then looked at the program materials in his hands. In less than barely two minutes, what could he possibly see?
"Director Wu said he is very polite; he indeed is very polite." Chen Ran shook his head, muttered to himself, tidied up the materials, turned around, and left.
After turning the corner over there, the female host asked, "Brother Xu, haven't you always wanted to do other programs? Why did you refuse?"
Since his last program was axed, Xu Yang had been concentrating on doing 'Youth'. He did want to do other programs, but there hadn't been many new programs, and even if there were, it wouldn't be his turn.
The female host often heard Xu Yang complain, saying the station had prejudices against him. It wasn't his fault for that program back then, yet they wouldn't give him a single chance.
So how co now that there was a chance, he refused to take it instead?
Xu Yang chuckled lightly and said, "Hanhan, I do want to do a program, but do you know what program the person who just sought out is doing? Thursday late-night slot, the budget is so outrageously low it makes one's hair stand on end!
And did you recognize that young man just now? It's that Best Planner who won the award at the annual eting. He's from the local channel. I didn't expect him to co to the satellite TV channel, and even take over the Thursday late-night slot!"
"A terrible ti slot, a budget so low it can't be any lower, plus a planner who just ran over from the local channel—do you think this program can last?" Xu Yang shook his head and said:
"Although I am thinking about a program, I'm not so hungry that I'd eat just anything. When the last program I did got axed, the station blad it all on . If anything goes wrong with this program again, I wouldn't be able to bear the responsibility."
Hanhan heard his implication. Saying he couldn't bear the responsibility was fake; it was obvious that he just felt the program was too small and didn't want to do it.
She recalled Chen Ran's award introduction during the annual eting. Having produced several explosively popular programs on the local channel, even if he ca to the satellite TV channel, it shouldn't be bad.
She originally wanted to try and persuade Xu Yang, but after thinking about his temper, she still shut her mouth.
Xu Yang reached out and patted Hanhan's shoulder, smiling as he asked, "Are you free tonight? Let's have a al together?"
Hanhan stepped back a bit, shook her head, and said, "I'm sorry, Brother Xu, I have things to do tonight."
Xu Yang smiled awkwardly and said, "It's fine, it's fine, whenever you're free."
……
Chen Ran returned to the program crew. Director Wu Tao asked, "Did he agree?"
Chen Ran shook his head.
"Although he said he didn't have the schedule for it, from the looks of it, he probably looks down on our program."
Director Wu Tao frowned slightly: "The program he does isn't big either, how could he look down on ours?"
"It might also be because of the ti slot and the production size." Chen Ran thought for a mont and said:
"Xu Yang has, after all, hosted large-scale variety shows. Even his current 'Youth' has more prestige than our little program."
Chen Ran added, "Moreover, he might also have concerns. If his last variety show hadn't flopped, he would have had the chance to follow popular variety shows. But it just had to flop, so he doesn't dare to take risks. Our program is too small, the budget is low, and the prospects are unclear. If he flops another program, he'll have to hide behind 'Youth' for the rest of his life."
Director Wu Tao shook his head; this mindset was indeed not very good. He asked Chen Ran, "Are we going to continue inviting him next?"
Chen Ran couldn't help but laugh and said:
"How is that possible? He already explicitly refused. It's pointless to invite him again. I had two candidates. Xu Yang's fa isn't bad, and he hosts a talk show himself, so he just had a relative advantage, that's all. Now let's look at the other one."
"Tell about it," Director Wu Tao said. He knew Xu Yang, and his hosting style was suitable, so he had no objections when Chen Ran brought him up. As for this second one, he couldn't figure it out.
"He's not from the satellite TV channel, he's in the tropolitan Channel," Chen Ran said.
"The tropolitan Channel?" Director Wu Tao's expression was slightly strange.
Chen Ran said, "Director Wu, you rember the forr 'Music Frontline' program, right?"
"I rember. It was a music countdown program on our satellite TV channel in the past. It's been cancelled and off the air for four or five years now, right?"
"Right, it's been off the air for four or five years, but the original host of the program, Zhou Zhou, has a very good style. After the program stopped back then, he went to the tropolitan Channel. He hosts a program called 'Zhou Zhou Cos to Visit' on the tropolitan Channel. I watched so of it these past two days, and his style is still that sa style."
"Now that you ntion it, I do have an impression of him." Director Wu Tao clapped his hands and said,
"That guy sported a small mustache back then, and his facial expressions were exaggerated when he spoke. This person's style is indeed suitable for this talk show, but as for his fa..."
Chen Ran said, "That's why I prioritized Xu Yang. Actually, his fa is also passable. We rely on our content to attract people anyway. As long as the content is good, these other things are secondary."
Director Wu Tao imdiately agreed: "Alright, I'll go ask the Director to contact him."
