Chapter 85 - What Use Is Being Pretty?
Actually, in the hearts of Chen Ran's parents, the New Year's Day holiday couldn't compare to traditional festivals like the Spring Festival or the Mid-Autumn Festival; it wasn't much different from a normal day.
During the years Chen Ran was in college, the family also spent it plainly and simply, without doing anything too deliberate.
But with Chen Ran rushing back, the two elders were still quite happy, bustling about to cook a table full of food.
While eating, Chen Junhai asked, "What kind of part-ti job is Yaoyao doing?"
Chen Ran said casually, "She's acting as a mascot to attract custors at a leisure lounge similar to a cafe."
He was repeating Chen Yao's excuse. Afraid that his parents would mistake a leisure lounge for a real bar, he specifically explained it a bit.
Chen Junhai didn't think much of it, rely saying, "How co everyone is on holiday, but they still have to work?"
Chen Ran said, "The food and beverage industry is all like this; the more it's a holiday, the better the business."
"We're at ho eating good food, while she still has to stay at school." Song Hui felt sowhat distressed for her daughter and said,
"Start a video call with Yaoyao, let's see her."
Chen Ran was slightly taken aback. "Right now?"
He glanced at his phone. At this ti, Chen Yao should be singing at the Street Corner bar.
Song Hui said, "Just start a video call to see her, it'll count as a holiday reunion."
"Then I'll call her first and tell her to log into WeChat." Chen Ran didn't start the video call directly, but dialed a voice call instead.
Chen Ran glanced at the TV. Chen Junhai, seeing his movent, thought the volu was too loud and was just about to turn it down, but Chen Ran stood up and walked outside.
The call connected, and the background noise was faint singing; sure enough, she was in the bar.
"Brother, what's the matter, calling at this ti?" Chen Yao asked in confusion.
"Mom and Dad want to video call you. Are you free right now?" After Chen Ran finished speaking, he thought this hint was clear enough.
Chen Yao imdiately panicked a bit. If their parents found out, wouldn't that be a disaster?
Then, realizing Chen Ran's intention in making the voice call, she hurriedly said, "Give two minutes, I'll start the video call with you."
When Chen Yao sent the video call invitation, her background was inside an empty room.
"Still doing your part-ti job this late?" Song Hui asked.
Chen Yao smiled unnaturally and said, "Yeah, business is good today, so it's a little bit later."
Song Hui emphasized,
"What's important for you right now is your studies, don't delay them! Our family's debts are paid off now, and we don't have any burdens. Your brother is developing very well at the TV station and his salary isn't small. Why don't you stop working part-ti and study with peace of mind?"
Chen Yao said, "It's fine, Mom. Consider it getting so practical experience in advance. I'll have to work after I graduate anyway; I can't always rely on you guys and my brother to support , right?"
"You, ah, you..." Song Hui shook her head. She understood her own daughter; everything else was fine, she was just a bit too fiercely independent.
The mother and daughter chatted for a long ti. Often, one lie requires countless other lies to cover it up.
Whenever their mother brought up the part-ti job, Chen Yao would act sowhat unnaturally.
Chen Ran found it amusing. His sister was a bit thin-skinned; it was only because they were on video that it wasn't very noticeable. If she were lying face-to-face, she would definitely give herself away imdiately.
After their mother inquired after her a bit more, Chen Yao said her work was about to start, and only then did they hang up the video call.
In the evening, the family sat together to watch the New Year's Eve concert.
When Zhang Fanzhi appeared on the TV, Chen Ran found it quite interesting.
Uncle Zhang and Aunt Yun would probe from ti to ti, asking Chen Ran to bring Zhang Fanzhi ho to et his parents.
Now, although Zhang Fanzhi hadn't co over, Chen Ran's parents were seeing her on TV.
"I don't know how these celebrities grow up to look like this, each one prettier than the last. If you find a girlfriend like this in the future, I'll be completely satisfied," Song Hui said, pointing at Zhang Fanzhi on the TV.
Chen Ran's breath hitched slightly. Although it was fake, the one you're pointing at is your son's girlfriend in na!
Chen Junhai, however, snorted disdainfully and said,
"What use is being pretty? You can't eat it for als. I think when our son looks for a partner in the future, appearance isn't important; the key is that their temperants must be compatible. With our son's mild and unhurried temperant, if he finds soone with a fiery temper, no matter how pretty she is, there won't be a good result."
Song Hui didn't argue with her husband, feeling that what he said also made sense.
But if he could choose, assuming their temperants were roughly compatible, he should definitely find one who is pleasing to the eye.
"It's still early, and besides, I'm so busy with work, I don't have ti to look." Chen Ran hurriedly changed the subject. If they continued discussing this topic, the estimated next step would be talking about finding soone to introduce him to a match.
Chen Junhai and Song Hui were just ntioning it in passing. Knowing that Chen Ran was currently on the rise in his career, they wouldn't rush him to get married for the ti being.
……
After twelve o'clock, Chen Ran received a New Year's Day greeting ssage sent by Zhang Fanzhi.
Looking at the format, it was basically the sa as the mass-texted greeting SMS of the past, only now it had moved to WeChat.
Zhang Fanzhi also played around with this kind of mass ssaging?
The corners of Chen Ran's mouth twitched; he just felt that this didn't seem like a ssage Zhang Fanzhi would send.
But turning it over in his mind, and recalling the ti he saw her looking like a hamster at the Zhang family ho back then, it probably wasn't impossible.
He hadn't spent that much ti with Zhang Fanzhi, so his understanding of her wasn't that thorough.
Chen Ran casually replied a "Happy New Year's Day" back to Zhang Fanzhi.
Originally, he was going to put his phone down right after sending it. Who knew he would imdiately receive Zhang Fanzhi's reply.
A Branch Above the Rest: "You haven't rested yet?"
Chen Ran was slightly surprised and replied: "Not yet, I'm at ho, just finished chatting with my mom and dad."
"Oh."
"Using a mass text for your greeting ssage is a bit lacking in sincerity."
A Branch Above the Rest: "It has a lot of sincerity."
Chen Ran smiled. Where did this sincerity co from!
He asked: "It's New Year's Eve today, you didn't participate in a program?"
A Branch Above the Rest: "Just got back."
...
...
Chen Ran didn't know when he fell asleep either; he only rembered chatting with Zhang Fanzhi for a long ti.
When he woke up, his phone was still grasped in his hand.
He didn't get out of bed either. Taking a rare mont to be lazy, he lay in bed and scrolled through his ssage history with Zhang Fanzhi from top to bottom.
This feeling was quite fascinating. They had added each other on WeChat the day they t, and up until now, the process of going from strangers to being familiar could be seen from the records.
Strictly speaking, the two didn't chat on WeChat much.
Zhang Fanzhi had a rather impatient temper; if she didn't get a ssage after waiting a short while, a phone call would imdiately co through.
But there were still so records, and Chen Ran could also feel so changes in Zhang Fanzhi's attitude towards him. She was still concise, but sotis she would say a sentence or two more.
This was good too. He would still have to trouble her with matters in the future, so it wouldn't do for their relationship to be too stiff.
In the afternoon, Chen Ran left ho and returned to Lin City.
Having to go to work tomorrow, he naturally returned a bit early.
He didn't go directly back to his residence, but bought so gifts, and carrying them, hurried to Director Zhang's residential complex.
There was still the tail end of the New Year's Day holiday left, so coming over to shoot the breeze with Uncle Zhang was fine too.
Chen Ran pressed the doorbell.
Ding-dong.
He heard the pitter-patter of soone running over inside.
Click, the door opened.
The person who opened the door wasn't Uncle Zhang, nor was it Aunt Yun, but rather a girl who looked sowhat familiar.
Shoulder-length short hair, with lively, expressive eyes.
