Joan’s office had slled like char and old ink.

Seven bearer files, zero survivors, the longest lasting three months and four days.

She’d let him read every page before she burned the folder.

Her thumb had pressed against his wrist while their hands sat on the sa file and neither of them moved away.

Bureau-trained.

Forty-two years old.

Running a soft play on him since the day she arrived.

But she’d burned a file that could have kept her career alive because the alternative was giving soone a reason to let him die.

That wasn’t nothing.

Now it was past midnight and the room was dark.

Yara was sitting on the edge of his bed in humanoid form.

She’d been there when he ca back.

Just there, as if she’d been waiting since before he left.

She was looking at his hands.

Soren sat down across from her. She didn’t look up.

"The ones before you," she said. "I told you what happened to them. The distances, the tilines, how close I got."

"You did."

"I didn’t tell you what I felt right before each one went dark."

She was quiet for a mont.

"The frequency grows," she said. "Every bearer I’ve ever sensed followed the sa pattern, the Heart activates, the signal starts small, day by day it gets louder, brighter, like a fire that doesn’t know it’s attracting sothing."

"Attracting what?"

Yara’s hands tightened on the edge of the mattress.

"I don’t know what it is, I’ve never seen it or heard it speak but I’ve felt it act."

"Three tis I felt a bearer’s frequency reach a certain threshold and three tis sothing reached down and cut the signal off like a hand closing around a throat."

Soren waited.

"Whatever does it, it doesn’t fight them, just... decides they’re finished. One mont the frequency exists. The next mont the person who carried it never existed at all and the world rearranges itself around the hole and nobody notices because there’s nothing left to notice."

"A god?" Soren asked.

"Sothing that acts like one." Yara looked at him now.

"The first two bearers were small," she said.

"The third was different."

"The third was loud, three months of signal, growing every day, when he touched the implent his frequency spiked so high I thought he’d broken through."

Her fingers were pressing dents into the mattress.

"Then the thing that writes endings reached down and ripped him out of reality in under a second and three months of growth, erased in the ti it takes to blink."

She stood up and walked to the window.

The shadows in the room shifted with her the way they always did, bending toward her body like iron filings.

"Your frequency right now is louder than his was at the end."

Soren processed that.

"You’re already past the threshold where every other bearer was erased," she said. "Every day you get stronger, the signal gets brighter, and whatever writes destiny has more reason to notice you."

"It already noticed , the quill connection confird that."

"I know." Her voice cracked on the second word. "That’s what I’m afraid of."

She turned from the window.

"I’m not afraid of what killed them because I’ve lived with that fear for three centuries and I’m used to it."

She looked at him and her red eyes had tears.

"I’m afraid of what’s happening to you, you’re getting stronger every day, the bonds are holding and your soul integrity is stable. Everything about you says you’re going to survive this."

"That sounds like the opposite of a problem."

"It’s not!" She crossed the room in two steps, close enough that he could feel her shadow pressing against his skin.

"Because the others were erased before they beca threats. "

She was standing right in front of him now.

"You are not a small signal, Soren. When that thing reaches for you, it won’t be quick. Whatever it takes to erase a frequency this loud will be violent enough that I will feel it happen through the bond."

Her hand ca up to the space over his heart where the Primordial Heart sat behind his ribs.

Her fingers hovered an inch from his shirt.

"I will feel you being unmade," she said. "Not from two continents away or from three hundred kiloters but from right here."

The room was very quiet.

"I can’t survive losing you." Her hand was still hovering over his heart.

Soren looked at her hand, then he reached up and closed the distance she wouldn’t, pressing her palm flat against his chest.

Her fingers spread against the fabric.

He felt her shadow surge through the contact, a pulse of sothing that wasn’t mana and wasn’t heat, just presence concentrated into five fingertips.

"Then we don’t let it happen," he said.

"You can’t promise that."

"I’m not promising, I’m telling you the plan." He kept her hand where it was. "I’m louder than the others and stronger, I have bonds they didn’t have, I have the quill and I have you."

"The others—"

"Didn’t have ."

She stared at him. Her shadow was vibrating against his chest hard enough that he could feel it in his teeth.

"You’re arrogant," she said.

"I’m alive with forty-seven days past every record in that Bureau file, I’m still here and getting louder."

Her fingers curled into his shirt.

"If whatever writes endings cos for ," Soren said, "it’s going to find out that erasing ans going through you and through Selah, through Maren and through every alliance I’ve built since night one."

"That might not be enough."

"Then we make it enough."

Yara’s grip on his shirt didn’t loosen. Her shadow settled against his skin, not surging anymore but staying.

Pressed against him the way Grimm pressed against his leg when she sensed sothing in the dark.

"I hate this," Yara said quietly. "I hate that you make believe things I stopped believing three hundred years ago."

"Good."

"It’s not good, hope is the thing that makes losing unbearable."

"Then don’t lose ."

She looked at him with an expression that was fury and devotion and terror braided together so tight he couldn’t separate them.

"I won’t," she said. "Whatever it costs."

[DING! — Obsession Index: Yara 59/75 → 61. Trigger: tar forced physical contact during emotional crisis direct counter to existential despair.]

The DING cleared. Yara’s hand stayed on his chest and neither of them moved.
