"The kid got a future. About the dinner tonight, sorry, Lin, it's off."
Before the Christmas Day ga, Kobe Bryant had told Lin he would take him over after the ga to try Mrs. Kobe's cooking. That invitation was rare.
But it looked like Klay had knocked out all the stuffing of enthusiasm out of him.
Kobe genuinely liked Lin. At the start of the season, Lin Yi's marketing idea had exploded, and the sports drink they backed had climbed to third in North Arica. With his career entering its final stretch, Kobe felt he should at least play host properly.
Tonight, though, he had no appetite for anything.
"All I want is a shower and so sleep," Kobe said quietly. "Four a.m. cos fast."
On television, fans winced as they watched him strap ice packs to his knees. It looked grim.
Lin rolled his eyes and glanced up at the ceiling. "Kob, do I look like I only care about food?"
Convincing Kobe to rest had never been easy. Lin had tried before. Shaq once told him straight up, don't bother. If Kobe decided sothing, that was it.
And no one understood him better than Shaq.
Lin watched Kobe press the ice tighter against his leg. If he kept grinding like this, the Achilles injury Lin rembered was only a matter of ti.
Damn it. This man was stubborn. Ti to go for broke.
"This Lakers team isn't winning anything," Lin landed the bomb.
Kobe's head snapped up. For a second, it looked like he might actually swing.
Lin stayed seated.
"Listen first," he added.
Kobe stared at him. "Go on."
"You saw the ga. Klay barely gets real minutes for us. I didn't even break a sweat tonight."
Kobe said nothing.
"If we're talking defense, Tyson isn't worse than Dwight. Chris gets criticized, but he's the best point guard in the league right now. Danny and Klay are elite off-ball guys. The Morris twins are athletes. Battier and Tony Allen would be key rotation pieces anywhere else, and they're just depth for us."
He paused.
"And we still have ."
Kobe's jaw tightened.
"The Lakers' issue isn't just Dwight. Without him, you'd be worse. But the fit is off. Steve's defense was shaky even in his pri. Now it's a target. The cap situation is tight, so midseason fixes are limited. When Nash and Dwight share the floor, teams spam pick and roll. Your wings can't contain the periter. Even strong interior defense won't save that."
He spoke evenly, no theatrics, just facts.
Kobe looked frustrated at first. Then thoughtful.
Lin took a small gamble. He knew that earlier in his career, Phil Jackson had convinced Kobe to step back when needed. That ant he would listen if the logic was right.
"You got a solution?" Kobe asked.
That question alone ant sothing.
"You need to cut your minutes."
Kobe stared deeper.
"You're thirty-three. You can still play forty a night if you force it. But if you break down, what then? Who carries this team?"
Silence.
"Second, stagger things. Let Nash run the second unit. Find a defensive guard before the deadline. If you make the playoffs like this, you won't last."
He continued.
"Consider bringing Pau off the bench with Nash. Pair him with an athletic four. If that doesn't work, slide Ron to the four; you move to the three. Start eks for spacing."
Kobe's eyes narrowed, but he did not interrupt.
"Stagger your minutes with Dwight. Give him lineups that resemble his Orlando days. Let him anchor second units. And you," Lin pointed lightly at him, "shift your focus. Fewer shots. More control. Save your legs for the fourth quarter."
He held Kobe's gaze.
"As long as the ga is close, you're still the second most dangerous scorer in the league late. That hasn't changed."
Lin was not asking Kobe to give up control, but asking him to redefine it.
The idea was simple. Break up the super lineup. Protect Kobe's body. Lean into depth. Preserve him for closing ti. His efficiency that season was already among the best of his career. With fewer forced shots and more playmaking, it could be even better.
Kobe leaned back, ice still strapped to his knee.
"If I am the second most dangerous, who is first?"
"You are looking at him." Lin pointed to himself with a goofy smile.
This drew a chuckle and smile from Kobe.
You really think that works?"
"I think it gives you a chance," Lin said. "Grinding forty-five minutes every night doesn't."
Kobe looked down at the floor for a long mont.
He hated limits. Hated the idea of stepping back. But he also understood windows. He was in the third act of his career, whether he liked it or not.
Finally, he exhaled.
"I'll think about it."
From Kobe, that was as far as a person could get.
Lin stood up. "That's all I'm asking."
Kobe gave him a look. "And about dinner. It's on"
Lin grinned. "Good."
Lin had walked away for a bit before hearing Kobe say.
"Aren't you afraid we will beat you with this?"
With a smile on his face, Lin turned and responded, "Nah, I'd win."
