Cari Champion (smiling, energetic):
"Good morning, everyone, and welco to First Take. We are coming off one of the most incredible gas in NBA Finals history. The New York Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs 138-130 in overti, taking a commanding 3-1 series lead. Lin Yi dropped a Finals record 66 points, and Tracy McGrady ca off the bench to explode for 13 straight points in overti.
With , as always, are Stephen A. Smith and Skip Bayless. Gentlen… where do we even begin?"
Stephen A. Smith (already fired up, gesturing toward the screen):
"Cari, I'll tell you exactly where we begin — with absolute domination! But before we go any further, roll the tape. My Top 5 Plays in overti from last night, because this ga was pure cinema!"
Stephen A. Smith (voice rising with excitent as highlights roll):
"Number five — Tony Parker with that crafty high-bank shot over Yao Ming in overti to put the Spurs up 117-116. You know it is a crazy list when scoring over SEVEN FEET OF HUMANITY! in the form of Yao Ming is in five."
"One, two, three, BAMM! Number four — Manu Ginóbili twisting his body like an accordion and draining that three-pointer over Danny Green. That gave the Spurs their first lead of the night. That brought his tally for the ga to thirty-six. And still lost."
"Give it to , BAMM! Number three — Lin Yi eting Jimmy Butler at the rim with a thunderous block! Sent the ball into Butler, then out of bounds. Talk about a brilliant 1-2 play."
"Now the final two. At number two — Lin Yi powering through Kirilenko like cardboard, shrugging off Tim Duncan like he wasn't even there, and finishing with that reverse layup for his 62nd point, breaking the NBA Finals single-ga scoring record! The man was all gas, no brakes during OT!"
"And my number one play… Tracy McGrady catching that pass from Lin Yi and drilling the ga-tying three-pointer to make it 122-122! After being quiet on the bench most of the series, T-Mac ca back from the dead and changed the entire ga! The man just reminded everybody why he was a two-ti NBA Scoring Champion."
Stephen A. Smith (leaning back, still hyped): "Those five plays tell the whole story in OT. But Cari, let say this — sixty-six points in the Finals! A new record!
This brother put the entire league on notice last night! I know brothers and sisters out screaming for Lin to one. I ain't mad at that. But...man, Tracy was instruntal. Instruntal. So it's kind of a toss-up between these two. Put one above the other, and I would be ok. "
Cari Champion (turning to Skip):
"Skip, I can see you're dying to jump in. What's on your mind?"
Skip Bayless (leaning forward intensely):
"Cari, let start by saying this: Last night, we witnessed greatness. Lin Yi just delivered one of the greatest individual performances in Finals history. Sixty-six points, 20 rebounds, five blocks. The man was unstoppable, irrefutable, relentless, and an absolute savage. Lin kept driving into the paint and releasing his load again and again into Kirilenko and Duncan. They both kept seeing white and were drilled all night.
But do you know who were not unstoppable... irrefutable... and relentless.
(Skip holds up two printed "missing person" flyers with photos of Paul and Klay)
Skip Bayless:
"I had to file a missing persons report and print these flyers! These two are supposed to be your second and third options?
Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady — two guys who basically have one foot in retirent — are out here doing their jobs! hah . anwhile, the so-called 'elite point guard and 'splash brother' were invisible! Klay Thompson went missing again! This man gets paid like a superstar and disappears like sugar in water when the lights are the brightest."
Skip Bayless (continuing, shaking his head):
"I'm telling you, Cari — the Knicks organization is smarter than we give them credit for. They knew Paul and Klay were going to be disappointing in the Finals, so they cleverly kept Yao and Tracy fresh on the bench all series just so they could bail them out when it mattered!
That's next-level roster managent. You pay Paul and Klay max money, then you bring in two future Hall of Fars who are on their last legs to actually show up in the biggest monts. Brilliant!"
Cari Champion (shakes her head):
"Skip, that's a bit harsh."
Skip Bayless:
"It's the truth! Lin Yi is carrying this team on his back, and when he needs help, the old heads answer the call. McGrady had been on the bench all series, then dropped 14 points in overti like it's 2004 again. Respect to T-Mac and Yao, but this is embarrassing for the younger stars on that roster. If not for Lin Yi and those two veterans, the Knicks don't win this ga."
Stephen A. Smith:
"You're right, Skip! Lin Yi is the best player in the world right now. The man played 48 minutes, dropped 66, and still had energy to block shots and grab 20 boards.
The Spurs fought hard, but they ran into a buzzsaw last night. I don't see how they co back from this. The Knicks are winning this series, and I can sll the fourth banner already, baby. What a ti to be a Knicks fan."
Skip Bayless:
"I'm with you, Stephen A. Lin Yi is on a mission. The Spurs gave it everything they had, and it still wasn't enough. Ga 5 is going to be tough, but I believe the Knicks close this thing out in San Antonio."
Cari Champion:
"Strong takes from both of you this morning. The Knicks lead the series 3-1, and after last night's performance, the basketball world is buzzing. We'll be right back."
