Night had fallen, and a bright moon illuminated the landscape. A fierce wind howled through the valley, kicking up clouds of dust and debris.
Taichi and Yohei lay hidden behind boulders on either side of the road, their breathing synchronized with the rhythm of the wind.
Their patience finally paid off in the latter half of the night. From the direction of the distant mine, the distinct boom of explosive tags and the roar of ninjutsu echoed clearly through the valley.
Before long, the noise died down. A short while later, the sound of frantic footsteps approached from the distance.
"Here they co!"
Taichi's hands had already completed the hand signs, chakra surging through his pathways. In the shadows, the three tomoe of Yohei's Sharingan glowed with a faint crimson light, his eyes locked onto the end of the road.
Eight ninjas were running for their lives, looking back as if the devil himself were chasing them. The mont they stepped into the valley, Taichi and Yohei sprang their trap.
"Fire Style: Great Fire Annihilation!"
"Fire Style: Fire Dragon Fla Bullet!"
Two massive waves of fire erupted from the left and right, sweeping across the valley floor. Caught off guard, several of the bounty hunters were instantly engulfed in flas.
However, so of the rcenaries were skilled. Using their burning comrades as at shields, one ninja threw up a Water Wall to douse the flas on himself, while another raised an Earth Wall to block the incoming inferno.
Just when they thought they had survived the initial ambush, Taichi cranked up the intensity. Pouring chakra into his technique, the standard orange flas suddenly turned a blinding, brilliant gold.
Radiating intense heat and light, the fire dragon flowed over the Earth Wall like a river and evaporated the water barrier instantly, rcilessly swallowing everything in its path.
The screams of the bounty hunters who were hiding behind the walls were cut short. Silence fell over the valley, broken only by the crackle of the blaze.
When Taichi finally ended the jutsu, the golden flas faded back to orange, and then, with nothing left to burn, they flickered out. The valley floor was left glowing with pockets of molten rock.
As for the eight bounty hunters? There wasn't even ash left.
Across the valley, Yohei stared, dumbfounded. When he saw the enemy block the initial attack, he had braced himself for close-quarters combat. He didn't expect Taichi to just... hit the gas pedal and erase them from existence.
He knew Taichi's Fire Style was strong, but this was ridiculous. Earth Style defenses? Water Style counters? In front of Taichi's golden flas, they were useless.
At the entrance to the valley, Captain Yamaguchi walked in. The heat had been so intense he had been forced to wait until the jutsu ended.
He looked around, intending to help clean up the battlefield, but quickly realized there was no point. There was literally nothing left to clean up.
A flicker of surprise crossed his eyes, but he quickly hid it. He told the boys to head back imdiately, and then poof—he vanished in a puff of smoke. It had been a Shadow Clone all along.
Those eight bounty hunters had run themselves to exhaustion escaping a clone, only to be incinerated. If they knew the truth in the afterlife, they'd probably die of embarrassnt.
---
The next morning—the seventh day of the mission—the enemy realized sothing was wrong when their eight-man squad didn't return. So far, they had lost fourteen ninjas. Even if they were just low-to-mid-level rcenaries, that was a significant loss.
Sure enough, the enemy beca much more cautious. They started sending larger groups and beca much slipperier. Taichi and Yohei couldn't replicate their total wipeout; the enemy refused to commit fully.
Even so, over the next three days, the duo managed to pick off another seven enemies.
But the Kawada family seed determined to grind them down. They kept hiring more ninjas to harass the mine. This strategy hit Team 8 right where it hurt.
The constant raids ant the team couldn't get proper rest. Yohei and Saori's performance began to noticeably drop.
"Dammit, these guys are like flies! They just keep coming!" Yohei rubbed his eyes. The redness wasn't from his Sharingan; it was pure exhaustion.
"If they have so many people, why don't they just swarm us all at once? Why drag it out like this?" Saori couldn't understand. With the numbers advantage—plus the Sand ninjas who still hadn't shown their faces—why stick to hit-and-run tactics?
"Who knows? Maybe they're fighting amongst themselves," Taichi grumbled, exhausted and annoyed.
"Whatever the reason, if they keep this up, we're going to break eventually," Saori said.
"Alright," Captain Yamaguchi said, looking at his tired students. He made a new plan. "From now on, we rotate. One person rests, while two go out on hunting patrols. I will hold down the fort at the mine alone."
"What about you, Captain?"
"You won't be hunting 24/7. When you co back, I'll take my break."
"I guess... that's the only way."
This stalemate dragged on until the tenth day.
---
On that day, Taichi had just finished his rest shift and was heading out to relieve Saori. As he passed a miner, sothing triggered his instincts. He stopped the man and examined his face closely.
The miner's skin was an unnatural, ashy gray, and his lips were slightly purple. Classic signs of poisoning.
His heart sank. He dragged the miner to Captain Yamaguchi and Tokugawa Shuo imdiately.
Within ten minutes, everyone in the mining area was gathered. After a quick diagnosis, Taichi confird that six people, including Tokugawa Shuo, had been poisoned. The symptoms were mild for now, but if left untreated, the mine's operations would collapse.
The team checked the usual suspects and found the toxin in the kitchen's water cistern. Based on the water source, Taichi quickly deduced the thod.
"This is a neurotoxin extracted from desert lizards. They calculated the timing and distance perfectly. They poisoned the river upstream right when we went to fetch water. By controlling the dosage, they ensured the concentration was high enough to affect us."
"Desert lizards... sounds like the Sand finally made a move," Captain Yamaguchi said grimly. He imdiately ordered a lockdown on all water supplies and had Saori and Yohei explain the situation to the unaffected miners.
Tokugawa Shuo watched the Captain handle the logistics with shaking hands. "Captain Yamaguchi... what about us? Are we going to die?"
Yamaguchi looked at the terrified client and the five trembling miners behind him. With a calm, steady voice, he said, "Do not worry. We have the best dical ninja right here. You will be cured shortly."
Tokugawa suddenly rembered Taichi's miraculous antidote from the journey over. He finally let out the breath he'd been holding.
Taichi was already working. Using herbs from his pouch and the mine's dical supplies, he whipped up an antidote on the spot. Fortunately, it was a standard Sand poison, and they had caught it early.
Thirty minutes later, six carefully crafted pills were ready.
Tokugawa didn't hesitate. He grabbed a pill and shoved it into his mouth. The five miners followed suit.
Yohei watched them with a look of pure schadenfreude.
Sure enough, the first gagging sound echoed through the room, followed by a chorus of retching. Then, a voice from hell whispered in their ears:
"Whatever you do, don't spit it out. I only had enough ingredients for those six pills. If you puke it up, you'll have to eat it again."
The six n clamped their hands over their mouths, tears streaming down their faces. Tokugawa suddenly understood exactly why Yohei had looked so miserable taking his dicine before. The taste was truly ungodly.
---
Not long after the poisoning crisis was resolved, a sharp whistle cut through the air from the distance—the signal that a Shadow Clone had engaged the enemy!
Taichi and the Captain exchanged a look, gathered Yohei and Saori, and rushed out.
With the Sand making their move, the stalemate was finally broken.
When Team 8 arrived at the scene, the Shadow Clones of Yohei and the Captain had just been destroyed. However, they had done their job, successfully halting the enemy outside the periter.
Thanks to the mories returned from the clones, they knew what they were up against: one Sand Wind Style Jonin, one Puppet Master Jonin, and three Chunin.
"Well, well. If it isn't Wind Wolf and Sand Shark. You gentlen finally decided to get your hands dirty?" Captain Yamaguchi called out, feigning surprise as he looked at the two leaders. "Where are your bounty hunter friends? Aren't you going to attack together?"
"The Sand does not lower itself to fight alongside rcenaries. To defeat you, we are enough," the Jonin nad Wind Wolf scoffed.
But before the Sand ninja could finish his sentence, Taichi, hiding in the back, had already completed his hand signs.
"Fire Style: Fire Dragon Fla Bullet!"
Violent, bright gold flas took the shape of a roaring dragon and surged straight toward the Sand ninjas. Even before the fire arrived, the intense heat made it hard to breathe.
Right behind Taichi, Saori finished her seals.
"Lightning Style: Lightning Net!"
A ball of lightning shot past the fire dragon, exploding over the Sand ninjas' position and expanding into a massive electrical web.
Caught off guard, one Sand Chunin was a split-second too slow. The net caught him, paralyzing him instantly.
"Despicable! Is sneaking around the only thing Konoha ninjas know how to do?" Wind Wolf roared as he leaped back, weaving signs rapidly.
"Wind Style: Great Breakthrough!"
A hurricane-force wind blasted from his mouth, attempting to blow back the fire dragon. But the golden flas were dense, almost solid; they cut through the wind without slowing down.
"Argh!"
A scream pierced the air. Taichi's Fire Style didn't give the paralyzed Chunin a chance to scream twice. The golden flas consud him instantly.
Seizing the opening, Captain Yamaguchi used the Body Flicker technique to engage the retreating Wind Wolf.
Taichi imdiately went for the Puppet Master, Sand Shark.
Yohei and Saori each picked off one of the remaining Chunin.
In an instant, the battlefield shifted from a 5-on-4 standoff to a series of 1-on-1 duels.
---
The Sand Puppet Master was an experienced Jonin. Before Taichi could close the distance, three puppets were already flanking him in a triangular formation.
having fought a puppet master recently, Taichi didn't break stride. His hands flew through seals as he ran.
"Fire Style: Phoenix Flower Jutsu!"
Taichi spat out a dense barrage of fireballs like a machine gun. The golden fireballs moved in organized groups of three, swarming the incoming puppets.
Sand Shark had just seen how terrifying those flas were. He knew the fireproofing on his puppets wouldn't hold up against that heat. He frantically yanked his chakra threads, maneuvering the puppets to dodge.
At the sa ti, he glanced toward Wind Wolf, hoping to switch opponents. This kid's Fire Style was a hard counter to his wooden puppets.
That glance was a mistake. What he saw made him want to vomit blood. Wind Wolf was being completely suppressed by the Konoha Jonin. Forget getting help—Wind Wolf looked like he needed saving.
Damn it! I knew that guy was arrogant, but I actually believed his big talk! He's folding like a cheap chair!
He glanced at the two Chunin. Their situation was even worse.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
The Phoenix Flower fireballs slamd into the ground, chasing the puppets relentlessly. The flanking formation was blown apart.
Taichi seized the opportunity. Chaining Body Flicker techniques, he closed the gap in the blink of an eye, appearing right in front of Sand Shark.
Distracted by checking on his teammates, Sand Shark reacted half a beat too slow.
Wham!
A chakra-enhanced punch slamd squarely into Sand Shark's chest, sending him flying backward like a ragdoll.
But the mont the hit connected, Taichi's expression changed. Without thinking, he flickered away instantly.
He was barely a second clear when—
BOOM!
An explosion ripped through the spot where the Sand ninja had been. The body flying through the air didn't land; it scattered into wooden shrapnel. A puppet substitution.
Taichi landed and imdiately pulsed his chakra, casting a sensory jutsu. The entire area within a 500-ter radius mapped itself into his mind.
He picked up a signal. Fifty ters to the southwest, a figure was using the forest cover to slowly move away from the battle.
"He's running?"
Taichi didn't have ti to ponder. The three puppets, having survived the fireballs, were charging at him again. However, probably because the controller was moving further away, their movents were noticeably sluggish.
Taichi channeled chakra into his fists. He flickered forward, smashing the puppets one by one. They were clearly being used as sacrificial pawns now.
As soon as the puppets were destroyed, the retreating signal in his sensory range suddenly sped up, fleeing at full speed.
"He really ran away!"
Taichi canceled his sensory jutsu and assessed the three remaining battles.
Yohei's three-tomoe Sharingan was doing work. He was toying with the Chunin opponent, completely in control. The Uchiha bloodline lived up to the hype; once he unlocked the third tomoe, his combat ability skyrocketed to Jonin tier. He was easily fighting at a Special Jonin level now.
Saori wasn't as strong as Yohei, but she was solidly Chunin level. She was trading blows evenly with her opponent.
However, her sealing jutsu had improved significantly. She cast the String Light Formation casually mid-combat. While it was a minor bind against a ninja, in a high-speed fight, even a montary hesitation is fatal.
In the brief mont Taichi watched, Saori landed the killing blow, becoming the first to finish her fight.
They exchanged a nod. Taichi imdiately turned to help the Captain with the Jonin, while Saori went to support Yohei.
Wind Wolf was already regretting everything. He had been too arrogant, underestimating the Konoha ninjas. If he had just swallowed his pride and coordinated with the rcenaries, this mission would have been in the bag.
But there are no do-overs in the ninja world. To save the Sand's "face," he hadn't even told the bounty hunters about the attack.
Once Taichi joined the fray, the Sand Jonin lasted less than a minute before Captain Yamaguchi's blade pierced his heart. As he died, his eyes were filled with nothing but regret.
With the Jonin dead, Yohei and Saori finished off the last Chunin.
Team 8 regrouped.
"The Puppet Master I was fighting realized things were going south and bailed early," Taichi reported, owning his mistake. "By the ti I realized it was a decoy, he was already out of range."
