The morning ca up clear. Adam had been awake since five all week, but this was the first morning he woke up without anything hurting. His ribs had knit. The displaced one was back where it belonged. He was working Armant into his bones again the way he had before Mirelle put him through all those walls.

He was ready.

He opened the Eclipse mber queue and looked at the counter.

mbers: 280.

Public queue: 5400.

Brandt's first training-program draft was at the top of the mber tray, eight pages, tight prose, his own handwritten margin notes on the back of each. Adjust for cohort variance. Strip if Sigma-style. The first two pages were a foundational-build curriculum Adam would have written himself if he had Brandt's twenty years of teaching it. The middle three were a deploynt-prep protocol calibrated to L1 and L2 risk envelopes. The last three were a debrief schema.

Adam read it twice. He queued his response: approve all, hold a paragraph for further discussion, request Brandt's preferred onboarding window for the first cohort.

Then he stood up.

He had been at the apartnt three days. He had recovered. The frawork was finished. Eclipse had a deputy, an advisor, and a triage system that would keep it running until he was back.

It was ti.

Ren rang at eleven.

She had a paper bag.

He let her in. She set it on the counter without taking off her jacket, like she wanted to be done with the bringing-the-food part of the visit before they had to talk about it.

"From your aunt," she said. "Recipe she sent last week. I made it last night. Better on the second day."

He looked at the containers. Three of them, small, stacked.

He looked at her.

She had picked them out and walked across half the city to bring them to his apartnt at eleven in the morning. Sage logged his pulse stepping up by half a beat and did not say anything about it.

My aunt sent you a recipe.

" Logged. "

When did my aunt start sending Ren recipes.

" Unknown. The correspondence between Lena Varen and Mirelle Delacroix is on the open record per Mirelle's foyer comnt. A handoff to Ren is a separate channel. "

The mothers are plotting.

" Likely. "

He took his jacket off the chair and hung it by the door. He pulled two plates from the cupboard, filled them, poured coffee, and set hers across from his.

They sat.

He took a bite.

It was good. She had cooked it the way Lena cooked it but with more salt and a different cut of vegetable in the base, and the result was both the recipe and not the recipe. He did not comnt on it.

She watched him eat a few bites and then looked at the counter.

"I have to tell you sothing."

He set the fork down.

She kept it short. The transmission from Matthias the evening before her mother arrived in Kerenth. The family's opinion on the Eclipse-deputy posting. The open question. The fallback. The assessor announced within two weeks. She had known when she read it who the family would send.

"She got what she ca for at the range," Ren said.

"All right."

She set her mug down.

"There is sothing else."

"Mother said yes. I am fully reassigned to Eclipse. The hybrid arrangent is over. The family released to your guild this morning before she flew out."

He took that in.

It was the largest thing the family had given her since they took her back at twenty.

"That's good," he said.

"It is."

She looked at her hands, then at the seam of the table, then at the corner of the kitchen where the sun was coming through the window. Not at him.

"She also said," Ren said, very quietly, "she is happy with you."

He did not, for a mont, manage to set the coffee cup back down. The cup hung over the saucer at the wrong angle and he had to remind his arm what its job was.

"Ehm, that… that is good. Anything else?" he said.

"That is all she said."

He nodded once.

"Just wanted to let you know. This is new to too."

He set the cup down.

Neither of them said anything else.

The kitchen had not been quiet like that in a year. The river outside was loud today. Inside, Adam Varen and Ren Delacroix sat across from each other at the counter. They did not speak, did not look at each other, and did not move. The silence was not uncomfortable.

It was sothing else.

After a long minute Ren spoke.

"You are deploying."

"Within the week."

She nodded. She had probably already known.

"L4 finally. I am a little excited about it. There is sothing I am saving NP for, and I am on a tight schedule. I have to collect 100k NP in a year. That ans I will have to stay longer in the next few worlds to get as many points as possible."

"How long world-side."

"L4 baseline dilation is five-to-one. Whatever the mission is, I should be able to close it in 180 days. About 36 days here."

"A month."

"Give or take."

She nodded again.

"Sage."

"Sage is always there, you know. It feels good to know I won't be alone this ti. You could co if you want?"

"No, I still have to do my final L3 mission."

"I see. Well, maybe next ti?"

"I will try to catch up. What about Brandt?"

"I'll text him after you go."

"Sophie."

"A ssage. Dinner if there's ti."

"Will you ssage the team? Technically we are still Sigma-4."

"Channel. Vane will know within the hour."

She held her cup. Longer than she usually did.

"Adam."

"Yes."

"Co back."

"That I am confident in."

She did not say anything else. She put the three containers in the cabinet where he kept his bowls, not in the paper bag, left the bag on the counter, pulled on her jacket, and went.

He sat at the counter for a long minute after she was gone.

The kitchen slled like Lena's dish made by Ren. The plates were on the counter. The cup she had drunk from was on the saucer.

He looked at the cup.

Then he texted Brandt.

Brandt replied in two lines.

mber recruitnt is set up. Public queue handled by Sage algorithm. Cohort start delayed twenty-one days pending your return or report. Co back.

Adam read it twice.

Will do.

Sophie's reply, when he ssaged her, was three words and a comma.

Be careful, founder.

He left it there.

Vane's auto-confirmation ca back from the Sigma-4 deploynt-channel ping eleven minutes later. One human-typed line below the standard acknowledgent.

Off-rotation extends to deploynt end plus seven days recovery. Do not break the body again on the way back.

He replied with the standard glyph and closed the channel.

The apartnt was quiet after the last reply.

He packed light. He had not packed in a year. The Spatial Pocket carried what mattered. He took a mont at the window to look at the river before he went.

The HEC deploynt bay was at the eastern end of the operations centre. The technician on shift was a woman he had worked with twice before. She processed his deploynt paperwork without comnt.

"Tier confirmation."

"L4."

"Solo deploynt."

"Solo."

She entered the paraters. The bay lit at its baseline cycle. She nodded at the platform.

He stepped on.

The notification fired.

EXPEDITION DEPLOYNT

Explorer: ADAM VAREN

Tier: L4 Force Join: not active Random assignnt within L4 pool.

Deploynt in sixty seconds.

DEPLOYNT CONFIRD

World assignnt: pending arrival notification.

Dinsional Anchor: none.

Ti dilation: 5:1.

The bay whited out.

He arrived standing.

The room was beige. Beige carpet, beige walls, a pattern in the wallpaper that read corporate. A water cooler in the corner. A row of cubicles past the elevators. Fluorescent overhead. Air-conditioning set to the kind of temperature a leased office ran at.

A television above the elevators was running a press release. The chyron read: VOUGHT INTERNATIONAL — Q1 PERFORMANCE REVIEW — A-TRAIN ANNOUNCES NEW SPEED RECORD ON LIVE BROADCAST.

Adam watched the television for a mont, then took in the elevators, then the frad posters lining the lobby wall behind the receptionist. One was the Seven, posed in formation. Holander at the centre, arms folded, the bright Arican smile. Queen Maeve at his left shoulder. Black Noir behind. A-Train to his right. The Deep. Translucent. A seventh slot stood in shadow. LAMPLIGHTER — RETIRED stamped across the silhouette in faded text.

Adam read the posters and the television and the Vought logo on the wall and registered the world.

The Boys.

He knew it inside two seconds.

Sage logged the geographic and temporal anchor in the half-second after.

" Manhattan. Ti stamp on the press release indicates the date is consistent with the opening of source material season one. "

He filed three things at the sa ti:

One: the receptionist had not looked up from her computer.

Two: he was standing in a corporate lobby in business clothes Sage had quietly shaped the suit into during transit. Dark jacket, dark slacks, white shirt, no tie. Sage had read the visual context from the lobby's design language in the half-second of arrival and fit him to it.

He walked to the corner of the lobby and stood by the water cooler at an angle the receptionist's line of sight would not catch.

He pulled up the EXPEDITION ACTIVE notification.

EXPEDITION ACTIVE

World code: L4-1882

Ti dilation: 5:1

Duration window: 3 years

PRIMARY OBJECTIVES

D-rank: survive 30 days world-side.

C-rank: complete one sanctioned Supe employnt milestone.

B-rank: complete two sanctioned Supe employnt milestones with cover intact.

A-rank: beco a mber of The Seven within the deploynt window.

S-rank: trigger a civilizational extinction event within the deploynt window.

Bazaar advisory. The displayed S-rank reflects the maximum-divergence ceiling for this world's projected baseline trajectory. The baseline trajectory does not reach civilizational extinction without Explorer intervention.

Adam read the S-rank line.

He read it twice.

He read the advisory.

He stood at the water cooler in a Vought lobby with a press release running on a television four tres above his head and let the weight of it land.

Total extinction.

Trigger.

The word had a different weight than he had been carrying. Nine worlds of saving people had not prepared him for the system asking him to do the work in the other direction. It was the sa Bazaar. It had been showing him the protective divergence ceiling all along. This one was not. This world would stand on its own arc unless he tipped it.

He could tip it.

" Reading. Directional inversion against the Explorer's career baseline. The chanic is consistent with Bazaar Rules. The advisory acknowledges this directly. "

She did not add to it.

He thought about it.

He thought about the Viltrumite voucher and World Gates that could open in twenty-eight days and the man he would be on the bay when those gates opened. Earth-Pri. Henrik, Lena, Sophie. Ren. Brandt. The team. The frawork. The people he was carrying.

He thought about the people who lived in this world. Real lives under his feet. Robin Ward on a sidewalk this evening. Hughie Campbell, who did not know yet. Annie January in transit from Iowa, believing in a God who had been her mother's lie.

He held both sides.

It was not a moral choice and he let himself know that.

He chose his side.

S-rank.

" Logged. "

He carried the choice as what it was. He did not pretend it was anything else. The Bazaar had shown him the destructive ceiling because the destructive ceiling was the largest divergence available here. He took it because Earth-Pri ca first. The choice was heavy.

But the smaller work was still his to take in the ti he had with these people. Robin Ward was going to live for whatever ti he could give her, and saving her would still be worth it. He could take the A-rank slot at the Seven on the way to the larger thing. Every protective hidden objective the deploynt offered, he would chase. The small humanity did not redeem the larger choice. He was not asking it to.

He pulled the extra information Sage showed during his pause.

" Earth-Pri cross-reference. Source material season one episode one opening sequence. A-Train collides with civilian Robin Ward on a sidewalk in Manhattan, evening, after dark. The show does not stage the exact intersection or ti on screen. Estimated incident window: between 19:00 and 20:00 local. Local ti at arrival: 11:14 AM. Pre-position window: approximately six to eight hours. Hughie Campbell, Robin's partner, is on shift at Bryman Audio-Visual, an electronics retailer in the city. His shift ends 17:00 local. They will et on the sidewalk after his shift. The impact occurs during their conversation. A-Train, on a Compound V high, will be running across the city and will hit Robin at full sprint. "

" Vought International tower is on Sixth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, twelve blocks north of our current location. The Seven is in residence. The seventh slot has been vacant since Lamplighter retired. The audition for the seat has already concluded; the press unveiling of the chosen candidate is scheduled for this afternoon. Vought chose Annie January, codena Starlight, currently in transit from Des Moines. "

" Compound V is the source of all observable Supe capabilities in this world. Vought-administered to infants under paid-consent protocols. The drug itself was developed by a Nazi scientist; Vought built the company around it post-war. Public is not aware of its existence at present. Adult administration is unstable. The show establishes that most adult subjects die or mutate into deford organisms; a small percentage survive with unpredictable powers; there is no engineered stable-adult protocol in this tiline. A stabilised twenty-four-hour variant is developed by Vought R&D later in the source material, not yet in existence here. The protocol I assess as survivable for the present body combines a micro-dose schedule across the deploynt window with Hamon-modulated cellular repair and internal Armant infusion at the lattice level. Survival probability is real but not certain. I will draft the acquisition pathway on request. "

Adam read it and filed it.

He asked Sage for all of it. The Robin Ward intercept plan. The Seven audition path. The Compound V acquisition draft. The S-rank pathway.

Sage queued the work in the back of his perception.

He pushed off the water cooler.

He walked across the lobby. The receptionist looked up as he passed. She did not stop him. He took the elevator down to the street.

Manhattan was midday, sumr. The sun was on the pavent. A hot-dog cart on the corner. Three taxis at a light. The Vought billboard was visible from where he stood, mounted on the south face of the tower behind him, six storeys tall, Holander's face above a slogan he did not read.

He had his answer. There were no illusions left about what the Bazaar was. He had work to do.

" Notice. Robin Ward intercept timing favours a six-hour reconnaissance window followed by a thirty-minute pre-position. I recomnd lunch first. "

A breath of dry humour she had not been allowed during the notification.

Lunch first.

" Notice. That hot-dog cart is well-rated. "

The corner of his mouth moved. He walked toward the cart.

The work was waiting. The cart first. Then the corner where Robin would be standing this evening, sowhere in the city. Hughie Campbell across town at his electronics-store job. Tonight Adam would give him his girlfriend back. He carried the rest of the trade in his own head.

He started the walk.
