On the other side, Aisha’s leg was injured last night and she couldn’t run fast at all. Shari was almost dragging her along, with a rustling sound behind them.
Suddenly, Shari, panic-stricken, stepped into empty space and fell heavily to the ground. A scream pierced the night sky as Shari clutched her calf in pain and rolled on the ground—a sharp branch had pierced right through her calf.
Aisha, who had climbed back to her feet, hesitated. The rustling sound was getting closer and closer; leaving Shari behind was the best option at this mont.
If it were before, she would have done so without hesitation. But the scenes of last night surfaced in her mind; although Shari wasn’t smart, she was very kind to her. She saved her and trusted her.
Aisha gritted her teeth and rushed over, first giving Shari a slap to make her shut up, and then dragged her. They stumbled their way to the back of a tree.
This tree had a thick trunk, perhaps hundreds of years old, and it was big enough for the two to hide behind.
Aisha initially thought to hide Shari here and then find another hiding place herself, but there was no ti; the rustling pursuit sound was already coming close to them.
"Shut up." Aisha clamped her hand tightly over Shari’s mouth while holding on desperately.
"Creak."
"Creak."
"Creak."
Listening to the footsteps gradually approaching, Aisha felt despair. The footsteps were heavy, appearing at intervals, like a zombie jumping.
At this mont, Yang Xiao, hidden on the hill, had a view that perfectly covered the area. He saw dozens of jumping Drowned Ghosts closing in, finding the hiding place of the two.
But instead of attacking imdiately, the dozen or so corpses crowded together, hunched over, trembling all over, twisting strangely, as if it was them who were trapped in fear.
Yang Xiao was shocked to discover that shadows were growing under these ghosts’ feet.
Yang Xiao could keenly spot the shadows because in the dim woods, there was already little light, let alone enough to project shadows.
The eerie ghost shadows twisted along with the ghosts’ stances, until two clumsy Drowned Ghost corpses squeezed together, and the ghost shadows they created completely enveloped Aisha and Shari, who were tightly embraced.
The next second, Yang Xiao’s eyes widened in shock, as a withered, pitch-black ghost shadow seed to appear out of nowhere, standing right in front of Aisha and Shari within the circle.
At the sa ti, an uncanny feeling of being watched erged, prompting Yang Xiao to quickly withdraw his gaze and hide completely behind a large rock.
Ti passed, second by second, until the mist dispersed in the vicinity. Only then did Yang Xiao dare to cautiously peek out.
The Drowned Ghosts and the two bodies wrapped in white cloth had disappeared. From his angle, he vaguely saw two human-shaped figures lying behind the tree.
At this mont, Yang Xiao dared to take a deep breath. He looked down the mountain in confusion; the last ghost that appeared out of thin air was the Painted Woman, he was sure, the ghost lurking by their side!
Indeed, only it had the power to kill.
Moreover, he witnessed the ghost’s thod of killing firsthand. These ghosts first surrounded the victim, then mimicked and learned the victim’s movents, sowhat clumsily, until their spreading shadows completely enveloped the victim.
And at this mont, the Core Ghost, Painted Woman, would appear and drain the person into a desiccated corpse.
It resembled more of a ritual, a very ancient and bloody ritual.
Suddenly, Yang Xiao jerked his head back after noticing soone walking from the lakeside; upon closer look, he was startled to find it was the long-missing Musa.
But what puzzled Yang Xiao was that Musa walked with a limp and was coming from the direction where the ghosts had disappeared.
