The familiar city–this bizarre city exactly like the last ti he entered.
It was always bathed in warm sunlight, unnervingly silent, and filled with rows of nearly identical office buildings, as if generated by a computer.
Charon stepped onto the ground, but this ti he was no light "knife-runner" looting and sprinting–he was a fully ard, tooth-and-nail war machine, a frontline assault soldier.
The roadside still had countless mannequins scattered around, but this ti, when Charon looked at them, nothing happened. They remained motionless in place. Whether they were simply frightened, or whether they only moved when a mission was triggered, was unknown.
"Rose." Charon called out.
「I'm here.」 The voice of the Shittim Chest echoed directly in his ear. 「Also, call Sleeping Beauty.」
"Got it, Rose. Sure thing, Rose." Charon wasn't going to indulge her. He would call her whatever he wanted–consider it the price for ruining his leisure ti.
「...」
She seed to sense his deliberate stubbornness and had no words in response.
Even inside the backpack, as long as Charon needed it, the Shittim Chest could still provide assistance.
After entering Zone One, the countdown had already started automatically. Charon had to complete all conditions before it reached zero–whether gathering materials or obtaining permissions.
But before that, his first task was simple: find where those things were.
「Environntal scan complete.」
Rose's voice remained calm as always, though she seed sowhat interested in this place:
「This place is fascinating. It seems filled with various unknown energies. They interweave throughout the atmosphere… strange. These theories actually coexist in harmony without directly reacting against each other?」
"I don't know what you're picking up, but let's focus on the mission first, my Lady Rose." Charon twitched his mouth. "Aren't you supposed to prioritize survival first?"
「Please understand, User Charon. You do not currently have full authority over the Shittim Chest. Calling it 'mine' is inaccurate.」
…She really is like a child.
Still, Rose agreed with prioritizing the mission. Almost imdiately, she began a wide-area scan, and the Shittim Chest in his backpack started heating up significantly.
「As ntioned, this place is filled with large amounts of junk data. Most of it interferes with my analysis and judgnt.」
"So can you actually handle it or not?" Charon asked flatly.
「Low-level provocation. My performance is the highest. Even highly confusing data can be easily distinguished.」 Rose sounded slightly annoyed, then after a brief pause–
「Four o'clock direction, 200 ters in a straight line. A subway station. That is our next destination.」
The last ti Charon ca to Zone One, if he had not taken that delivery mission and had instead pushed forward, he would likely have reached one of the entrances.
And then… nothing after that.
Because–
「Warning: The subway station contains a large number of danger signals. Estimated large-scale monster concentration. You–」
She was about to warn him to be careful, but imdiately realized that Charon now seed… a little too dangerous.
"…Never mind. It doesn't seem necessary to worry too much."
Danger signals?
A feral grin slowly appeared on Charon's face as he raised his light machine gun.
"I'd like to see what in that subway station is more dangerous than what I'm holding."
And indeed, Charon's "assault" choice was correct.
The subway station had two types of monsters. One was the faceless security squads, groups of three patrolling the tunnels. The other was the support staff–normally ticketing, inspecting, and maintaining order in the real world–but here, their primary function was surveillance of every corner of the station. Once an intruder was detected, they would trigger a chain reaction, summoning all security units to attack together.
And their density was extrely high. In an open subway station with almost no cover, stealth was nearly impossible. To reach the train, one had to either fight through or rush before the enemies reacted.
In essence, this was a pure head-on combat section of the map–no boss, otherwise it would be almost impossible to clear.
And this ti, Charon directly brought out his absurdly thick gun barrel, absurdly long belt of ammunition, and extrely high-grade armor-piercing rounds–bullets so powerful they felt wasted on these enemies.
Facing the "monster tide," Charon simply raised his weapon expressionlessly and held down the trigger.
With the roar of the machine gun, the blazing muzzle fire swept everything in front of him into dust.
Almost no mass-spawning monster could stand against weapons of the highest tier from his inventory. Each bullet pierced through four to five enemies, leaving only shattered fragnts that dissolved into particle effects.
As for the loot scattered everywhere, he wasn't interested. He hadn't co here to scavenge.
「Excellent efficiency,」 Rose evaluated. 「This is good. If you maintain this output, it will greatly assist our future exploration and prevent us from being delayed by aningless data fragnts.」
"This ti seems fine." Charon said, staring at his seemingly endless ammunition supply, his smile slightly stiff.
What had he just done?
That single barrage alone had burned through 100,000 Zero Coins–almost equal to the total value he extracted from this run.
Although compared to his total ammunition stock it was only a drop in the bucket, it still hurt.
He should've brought more blue or purple ammo. Using gold rounds on trash mobs was way too wasteful!
But it was too late to think about that now. Charon sighed while following Rose's directions through the gate.
The mont he passed through, an ear-piercing alarm sounded, startling him.
Although the alarm blared like sothing about to launch a nuclear strike, not a single monster appeared.
"…So it was just a scare tactic. Why make such a big fuss?" Charon muttered, then checked the direction and headed toward the platform.
「Not exactly. Because of your previous battle, you have completely cleared this subway station. There are no remaining danger signals detected.」
After hearing that, Charon imdiately felt much less regret.
If it's cleared, then why feel bad? I'm totally satisfied.
