Nikke, something’s seriously wrong with this evacuation point! Chapter 80 80: What Were You Trying to Do Just Now…?
The Raptures drawn in by the gunfire were quickly wiped out.
There weren't any particularly dangerous Raptures nearby, so for Scarlet and Rose, killing them was as effortless as breathing.
"All targets eliminated. Hostile forces neutralized."
Rose sheathed her sword, but instead of looking at her younger sister, her gaze shifted toward the mansion where the gunshots had co from.
"Scarlet… the lieutenant is still inside, right?"
Her voice was unusually low and heavy–so much so that even Scarlet had never heard her speak in such a tone before.
"…Yes."
Scarlet answered with slight guilt.
After all, she had left the lieutenant alone inside while she herself ran out, even if it had been an ergency decision.
There was no more gunfire coming from inside now, so the fight was probably over.
The combat ability Charon had displayed–especially when he casually eliminated those two soldiers–was already more than enough proof. At the very least, Scarlet no longer doubted Lieutenant Ron's ability in anti-human combat.
Rose, anwhile, inhaled sharply.
Her pupils trembled.
But very quickly, her expression hardened with determination.
"Scarlet."
She turned around, her eyes filled with absolute resolve.
"Don't worry. Big sister will help you."
"…?"
Scarlet frowned.
What was her sister talking about?
"Perfect. There are Rapture corpses here. We can rearrange the scene a little." Rose dragged over the corpse of a Servant-class Rapture while speaking urgently. "No matter what, I won't let my little sister beco a murderer!"
"Co help . Luckily this place is far from the camp–I can still manage this sohow."
"Wait, Sister, what exactly are you talking about? Who killed soone?"
For the first ti, genuine bewildernt appeared in Scarlet's usually cold expression.
"Huh? Then those gunshots weren't…?"
The sisters stared at each other.
At that mont, Scarlet finally realized sothing.
Her sister had apparently developed a tiny misunderstanding regarding those gunshots.
Right then, a voice ca from inside the mansion courtyard.
"Hm? That voice… Rose ca too? Perfect timing. Co help us carry so things. I'm worried the two of us won't finish moving everything. With you here, it should be enough."
Rose's face slowly turned bright red.
She looked toward her younger sister with embarrassed indignation, while Scarlet tactfully turned her face away and pretended she hadn't seen anything.
"Scarlet! Why didn't you say so earlier?!"
Rose's tone even carried a hint of spoiled complaint.
"Because Sister never asked."
Scarlet suppressed her voice as much as possible.
This side of her sister was incredibly rare, but she absolutely couldn't react too strongly right now.
Otherwise, during their next sparring session, her sister would definitely start cheating shalessly.
"Uuuu… how an…"
Rose fake-cried for a couple of seconds before finally sighing helplessly.
"Well, anyway, let's go help the lieutenant first. We've already delayed long enough. If we return too late, the lieutenant commander will scold us, you know?"
"And," she added bitterly, "the only ones getting scolded would be us."
Scarlet tightened her grip on her sword.
That was true.
Even when everything was caused by a superior officer, the ones punished in the end were always the Nikkes.
Still, Scarlet's emotions were complicated right now.
It was obvious that Rose had absolutely no idea what Scarlet had just gone through.
And she didn't know whether the lieutenant planned to explain any of it.
So things… were probably better left unknown to her sister.
The two sisters entered the courtyard.
Charon stood by the mansion entrance and waved at them.
"Over here."
"Okay, we're coming," Rose answered before hurrying over. Scarlet followed close behind.
But the mont Rose stepped inside–
She froze.
On the long rectangular coffee table sat a mountain-like pile of canned food.
anwhile, Charon was stuffing can after can into a travel backpack.
"Don't just stand there."
Without even turning around, he waved his hand and tossed two similar backpacks toward the sisters.
"You two help pack so too. These are valuable living supplies."
What kind of scene even is this?
The sisters had no idea whether they'd been overwheld by Charon's unquestionable tone or simply stunned speechless by the sight before them.
Either way, neither of them said a word.
They obediently walked over to the table and started packing supplies.
The brands printed on the cans were completely unfamiliar to them. There were no production dates or ingredient labels either.
But they still recognized what the contents were.
Luncheon at.
Tuna.
Fruit.
Chicken and duck legs.
Italian risotto.
Condensed milk.
Coffee powder.
One bizarre canned food after another appeared before their eyes.
And after looking more carefully, they realized it wasn't just canned food hidden underneath.
There were bars of high-concentration dark chocolate, canned beer, and bottles of water without any labels.
There were even tissues, disposable towels, and soap.
Scarlet no longer rembered anything from before becoming a Nikke.
But ever since becoming one, the only food they had ever received consisted of compressed biscuits and tasteless energy bars.
How could they possibly have seen anything like this before?
Dazed, the sisters helped Charon finish packing everything away.
Then the three of them walked out of the mansion carrying backpacks taller than their own heads.
"Alright," Charon said while walking in front, "ti to head back."
"W-Wait, Lieutenant!"
Rose couldn't help asking:
"Where did all these supplies even co from?"
"Obviously they were stored here," Charon replied without turning around. "No one's coming back for them anyway, so what's wrong with taking them?"
"Oh, right. Don't tell Barnes about this. Otherwise he'll just confiscate everything."
"These are mine and Scarlet's spoils of war."
"Hm… the two bags you're carrying are yours to deal with."
"Is this really okay…?"
Rose suddenly felt her scalp go numb.
Barnes probably wouldn't inspect their belongings anyway, but hiding things from a superior officer…
Well, if the lieutenant himself said it was fine, then she wouldn't be overly stubborn about it.
Being flexible according to circumstances was one of Rose's rules for survival.
As they walked, Rose suddenly noticed Scarlet slowing her pace slightly.
She imdiately understood.
Matching Scarlet's speed, Rose subtly distanced herself from Charon while still remaining close enough to support him instantly if needed.
"Sister," Scarlet said quietly, "even though I'm only asking now… what exactly were you trying to do earlier?"
Her voice carried no emotional fluctuations, but the aning behind the question caused Rose to fall silent for several seconds.
"Earlier" referred to the mont Rose thought Scarlet had shot the lieutenant.
"Scarlet, that matter is already over," Rose answered lightly. "As for sothing that never happened, I don't know anything about it~"
Scarlet frowned.
Every ti a topic ca up that Rose didn't want to discuss, she would brush it aside like this–almost as if she were deliberately trying to fool her younger sister.
"Sister, we are Nikkes now. We are soldiers," Scarlet said softly. "I would never do sothing that disgraces what we are."
"So please… don't have unnecessary thoughts either."
"Mhm~ Since little Scarlet said so, then of course I'll listen."
Rose quickened her pace.
Scarlet watched her sister's back silently and said nothing more.
