As he was having breakfast, the phone on the sofa kept ringing.
Sophie Smith was anxious at heart, knowing that those must be calls urging him to return. She had a selfish wish deep down, hoping he could stay by her side, accompanying her in this small single apartnt.
It was probably after the eighth ring that he finally pulled the chair back, walked over to the sofa, bent down, and picked up the phone.
"What’s the matter?" His voice ca across with not a hint of warmth, causing a strange tightness in Sophie’s heart, as her gaze drifted over towards him.
"I say, younger brother, the company is in deep trouble, and here you are, running off with Sophie Smith for so private ti?" On the other end, Luke Land’s voice was filled with displeasure. Yesterday, during the turmoil at the press conference, Luke saw in a video how Asher Land rushed to the scene to rescue Sophie, showing that even after four years, Sophie still held the most important place in his heart, only growing, not diminishing.
"The company’s exterior is about to explode, blocked by a large group of reporters and onlookers, all demanding justice!"
"Were there any fatalities?" Asher’s expression turned more serious; the chaos at the press conference now seed urgent to resolve without any delay.
"No fatalities, but a few seriously injured..."
"I’ll return to the company imdiately."
With that said, Asher straightforwardly hung up the call.
His face still held a trace of unresolved anger as Alexander cautiously lifted his eyes to glance at Asher, fearful that if he wasn’t pleased, he might vent his temper on him, given that he felt deep down he didn’t quite win the favor of this uncle.
Asher turned around, seeing the mother and son’s gaze land on him, and now his almost furious look seed to have scared them.
He tried to rein in his emotions.
"I have to go." He walked over to Sophie and spoke softly.
"Go?" Sophie was extrely frightened inside, instinctively standing up and gripping the cuff of his shirt, "Will you co back?"
He curled his lips, responding with a light yet firm tone, "Yes, of course, I’ll co back."
She held onto his cuff for a long ti before slowly letting go.
She lowered her head, her hands hanging by her sides.
Seeing her sad and lost look made Asher feel unsettled too. He reached out and embraced her.
"Silly Lady, when I, Asher Land, say sothing, I an it. When I say I’ll co back for you, I will. Got it? I don’t allow you to let your imagination run wild."
He placed a kiss on her forehead, bade her goodbye, and then turned to leave.
Hearing the door close, she imdiately felt a deep, overwhelming sadness.
She slid down the cold wall, slowly squatting until she sat on the ground.
She hugged her knees, burying her head in between them, and tiny sobbing sounds erged.
"Mommy, don’t cry..."
Alexander stood by her side, sowhat flustered and at a loss.
He seldom saw his mommy cry, and now she cries just because she’s parted from that uncle?
"Alexander, mommy is fine, mommy is really fine..."
Whether it was to comfort Alexander or herself, it seed to have no effect at all.
"Mommy, if you truly like that uncle, then...next ti, I won’t make him angry, okay?"
Alexander seed to think for a long ti before he ca to a decision.
