Mr. Sun left, and he did so cheerfully. The urgency he exhibited upon arrival was replaced by pride as he departed, his stride especially jaunty.
Mr. Zhao glanced out the window and, seeing that everyone was busy, didn’t dare to make small talk and joined in the work.
The office quieted down, and Zhou Ning and Liu Yongxin went through their related parts of the case again, packing the autopsy video and relevant reports into the file.
Zhou Ning didn’t ask Mr. Zhao for help but urged him to study, as the exam in just a few days was more important.
It was only after a morning spent looking at the neatly packed files that Liu Yongxin finally breathed a sigh of relief.
"All right, let’s go have lunch."
Mr. Zhao ca over with a mischievous grin and said:
"What, is Doctor Liu going to bleed and treat us?"
"Cut it out, we are just eating at the cafeteria. Quick battle, quick decision, we need to hurry back."
Zhou Ning paused for a mont, a flash of confusion crossing his mind, but he understood almost imdiately.
"Master, you think soone will co this afternoon?"
Liu Yongxin nodded, nodding with satisfaction.
"It’s good that my apprentice can see through so things. Let’s eat at the cafeteria and then hurry back. At least we can’t drop the ball on our end, or the pressure on Xu Da’s side will be even greater. If people do co, there might be a second autopsy. We need to be fully prepared."
The trio quickly went downstairs to the backyard cafeteria, ate their al quickly, and before they could even make it back upstairs, Liu Yongxin’s phone started to ring. Glancing at the number, Liu Yongxin gestured for them to stop.
"What’s up with Xu Da?"
"Where are you guys? Hurry back to the office. People from the provincial departnt and the city are here."
Mr. Zhao burped and stared wide-eyed at Liu Yongxin.
"Darn, Doctor Liu, your bad premonitions co true? We just ca out with the report this morning, and now they’re here?"
"No more nonsense, hurry upstairs, and keep your mouth shut. Zhou Xiaozhou and I will handle the answers."
Mr. Zhao nodded hastily like he was pounding garlic, knowing that while he was good at chit-chat, his expertise faltered when it ca to professional matters.
"Got it, I’ll keep quiet."
The three walked briskly back to the small second-floor office and imdiately saw many people standing in the hallway. Mr. Feng gave them a look and then motioned towards the eting room. Liu Yongxin nodded.
"Zhou Xiaozhou, get the dossier. Bring the cara and that laptop too, as we might need to review the process here."
Zhou Ning hurried to the office, gathered up the prepared items, and headed towards the eting room.
Upon entering and looking up, he saw Mr. Cui, the director of the city’s forensic departnt, whose face was ashen. Although he was talking to the person next to him, his gaze towards Zhou Ning was frighteningly cold.
Zhou Ning didn’t mind; he had t the man twice, and neither ti was particularly pleasant. As Liu Yongxin had said, with such a slap to their face, how could they show goodwill?
After placing everything in front of Xu Dayuan, Zhou Ning turned towards the corner. After all, this room was filled with either high-ranking officers or experts, and he didn’t have the standing to join the front ranks. But just then, Mr. Cui Haibin spoke up.
"This is Doctor Zhou, Elder Bai. You asked about the software on the road, he’s the one who developed it in collaboration with Qindao University."
The white-haired Elder Bai, who was standing beside Cui Haibin, brightened his eyes and eagerly looked at Zhou Ning.
"Impressive, young man. Don’t sit in the back, co up front."
Mr. Sun glanced at Cui Haibin with a wary face, and then gestured towards Zhou Ning.
"Doctor Zhou, co sit next to ."
Zhou Ning had no choice but to bite the bullet and move over. As a result, Liu Yongxin was pushed to the back. Zhou Ning turned to look at Liu Yongxin, who gave him a calm look and then glanced at Cui Haibin.
Zhou Ning understood; they were obviously feeling aggrieved and would be looking for issues, so it was best just to endure it.
The eting began, and the people from the provincial departnt were straightforward. They looked through the dossier, watched the autopsy video and the interrogation footage, each showing intense excitent on their faces.
"Xu Dayuan, your team has done well this ti. With the resolution of the 3.10 case, you’ve managed to solve the ’Red Dress’ serial murder case, which is a significant achievent. This case has been ongoing for over five years with twelve victims and is particularly heinous in nature. You must proceed promptly with transferring the case to the prosecutor’s office."
Xu Dayuan nodded repeatedly, and Elder Bai, wearing his glasses, scrutinized the dossier. When he saw Cui Guanglin’s DNA, he looked up, puzzled.
"I have a question, of course, it’s just a question; how did you manage to find the suspect Cui Guanglin through a DNA analysis during the investigation of the 3.10 case?"
Additionally, why would one think of the red jacket serial murder case? Is it just because of a red down jacket? Or is there sothing that’s not written in the case file?"
Xu Dayuan smiled at Elder Bai and said,
"Let answer that question."
Elder Bai naturally had no objections, but Cui Haibin laughed and wagged his finger.
"It’s not appropriate for you to answer, I just watched the autopsy video, and the whole process was led by Doctor Zhou. Let’s give the young people a chance to speak!"
Elder Bai smiled, he didn’t care who explained, he just wanted to know the reason.
"That’s fine, it doesn’t matter who explains."
Xu Dayuan looked at Zhou Ning, Zhou Ning leaned forward, placing his hands on the table.
"When we got the DNA report, we were also shocked, after all, such a special XXY chromoso, but the direction of investigation wasn’t clear, we could only search through major hospitals in Qindao for related clinical cases.
After that, we analyzed so information obtained from the autopsy, there were scratch marks inside the victim’s body, based on the depth we calculated the length of the murderer’s fingers, of course, there was also an unexpected factor."
At this point, Zhou Ning paused, and Xu Dayuan gave him an encouraging look, signaling him to continue.
"Go on, what’s the unexpected factor!"
Elder Bai was full of interest.
"On the evening of March 17th, my cousin and her boyfriend’s family had dinner together, the boyfriend is Cui Guanglin, this man has a mole on his nose, is short, has androgynous looks, and especially has very small hands, which I rember distinctly. Of course, the banquet ended very unpleasantly.
Then, on the 18th, during our search in the provincial city’s hospitals, I found a screenshot of Cui Guanglin, compared his information, it matched completely with our previous analysis, so I went to No.1 Middle School to look for this person, but he had disappeared. After we found him and took his blood for comparison, he was confird to be the suspect.
We began to study his detailed information, and of course, during this period, we used facial recognition software and found the information of those five victims in the red jacket serial murder case. We deduced that in these eleven cases, the bodies were severely decomposed, if traced back, the ti of death was always in February or August."
Subsequently we found that February 14th and August 2nd were Cui Guanglin and his brother’s birthdays. We brought his parents to the scene, then gave the suspect a physical examination, and conducted psychological intervention on the suspect. His psychological defenses collapsed, and that’s when he confessed."
Zhou Ning’s explanation was very straightforward, and Elder Bai nodded in realization.
"I didn’t expect the ti of the incidents would lead to a breakthrough; you all have been thorough. I heard that the five victims whose identities were unrecognizable have also been found?"
Xu Dayuan nodded, at this ti he couldn’t back down.
"The facial reconstruction software has no issues in finding people in the new version of identity information. However, applying this searching thod in the old version of identity information is a bit challenging. For two victims, we found 12 similar individuals in total, and after eliminating others, we’ve found the information of these five people."
As he spoke, the information of these five people was already displayed on the big screen. Cui Haibin didn’t say a word more, and Elder Bai was already astonishingly surprised.
"The photo quality of the old ID cards isn’t high, being able to filter down to this number is already beyond my expectations."
Xu Dayuan shook his head with an air of indifference and said,
"That’s nothing, when the victim Cheng Chunyan was found, her facial features were destroyed, cut and burned, completely unrecognizable. With a scan of this software, it directly found the victim’s information. The accuracy mainly depends on the clarity of the comparison photo. I’m not exactly right, but that’s the general idea."
Xu Dayuan smiled politely, and Elder Bai’s interest was further piqued, montarily forgetting the purpose of today’s visit.
"Oh? I really want to have a chance to try it out. I wonder if there are plans to promote this software or if a patent has been applied for?"
Speaking of which, Zhou Ning didn’t know anything about it, and Liu Yongxin, standing up, smiled at Elder Bai and said,
"Elder Bai, rest assured, the first phase of the software is already designed, and it’s currently in the debugging stage. It won’t be long before we can start promoting it. This is not only the honor of Qindao but also the honor of our Ludong Province.
However, if it weren’t for Doctor Lu and their team’s ticulous work, preserving the files of the red jacket serial murder case, we might still not know if we could link all these cases together. In the future, for such unresolved cases within the province, we can share information uniformly, giving the investigation of cases a glimr of hope."
Zhou Ning admired these words greatly.
Promoting the software, praising Qindao University, giving a nod to the city bureau’s interference, and discussing the case as if it was easy, this simply outclassed Cui Haibin, who coming in like he was causing trouble hadn’t gotten any benefit himself.
Cui Haibin’s face showed he couldn’t take it, as he leaned back in his chair.
"On the day of the incident, I ca to the Qidong District Branch Office. Why didn’t you explain the scene findings in detail at that ti? If we had known then that this case also involved cut fingertips, wouldn’t we have combined the cases much earlier?"
His comnt was quite amusing, Xu Dayuan was the first to laugh, followed by Liu Yongxin and Zhou Ning. Liu Yongxin glanced around and said,
"I rember, at that ti you all rushed to the autopsy room, and ca out in less than five minutes, leaving behind a remark that it wasn’t the red jacket serial murder case, and then you left.
Therefore, we didn’t investigate in that direction. Being able to solve this case is an honor for our Qindong Sub-bureau. Of course, if you all suspect there was a forgery, or believe that the evidence for combining the cases is insufficient, you’re welco to point it out here, and we accept your criticism and corrections."
With that, Cui Haibin was left speechless, having not expected the perennially ineffective Liu Yongxin to put him in his place.
