Zhou Ning nodded, tore off the clothes on his body, and tossed the gloves and mask aside. It was only then that he realized his clothes were completely soaked through.
"Before the victim fell from the building, soone twisted her neck from left to right, causing cervical dislocation. After our analysis, we determined that this injury was not caused at the sa ti as the fall. Later, I will have soone analyze the bone grinding slices of the legs.
Additionally, we found three subcutaneous hemorrhages shaped like finger imprints just above the hairline on the back of the victim’s neck. I have already scraped off the epidermis to see if we can find any extracts, but don’t hold out too much hope for that."
Xu Dayuan was stunned.
"What do you an? We’ve found the fingerprints, so why shouldn’t we be too hopeful?"
Liu Yongxin’s eyebrows were tightly furrowed as he sighed.
"The body has been frozen for three years, and moreover, it was transported all the way to the city bureau’s autopsy room. Whether any traces remain is uncertain. Pray that the killer didn’t wear gloves, but judging from the performance of the killer in the previous two cases, it’s unlikely any evidence will be left behind."
Zhou Ning nodded.
Glancing at the enlarged photo of the victim’s fingers, Zhou Ning had noticed, the mont the thin blanket was opened, that there was a faint scar on Zhang Yinan’s left index finger, which matched the person in the photo found in the storage card inside Qin Xuejin.
It seems she had obtained a lot of confidential information, but likely did not manage to transfer all the content in ti and was targeted, ultimately eting a violent end.
Xu Dayuan was dazed for a mont before vigorously rubbing his hair.
"So, we can prove that the victim Zhang Yinan didn’t commit suicide, but the current evidence cannot prove who the murderer is?"
"Correct!"
Seeing Xu Dayuan looking so deflated, Zhou Ning continued:
"Don’t worry, I’ve already sent them off for testing. Whatever the case, let’s wait for the test results. Oh, and Zhu Xingxing, send those hairs for testing as well. Where is Sun Gaotie?"
The group exchanged glances with one another. The autopsy had been going on for a few hours, and they had not noticed Sun Gaotie nearby. Normally, even though timid, he would at least stay to watch the entire process.
Zhou Ning imdiately called Sun Gaotie’s cell phone, and on the second ring, the call was answered.
"Team leader, I am checking the records. I just found that on February 15, 2009, the team led by Cui Haibin had a record of sending in samples. But after checking several, none of the death records were registered under Zhang Yinan. Mrs. Cui helped find the electronic laboratory order of the day, I just finished checking it, and it was confird that there was no submission."
Zhou Ning narrowed his eyes, looked at Xu Dayuan, and then quickly spoke:
"Good, head back to the office then. We’ve finished up here, too. Don’t forget to thank Mrs. Cui."
Sun Gaotie responded, and then hung up the phone.
Xu Dayuan stood with his hands on his hips, lost in thought, while Liu Yongxin nudged him.
"I an, Leader, what’s with that embittered look? The autopsy report clearly states, after testing, that there were no toxic substances or drugs in the victim’s body. That’s fabrication of evidence right there. And the severe dislocation of the cervical vertebrae – not only a forensic doctor but even a trainee could notice that, and yet no autopsy was conducted. Isn’t that a deliberate concealnt?"
Xu Dayuan nodded and dialed Mr. Hu’s number, then went to the changing room next door. After speaking for over ten minutes, when he erged again, his expression had noticeably improved.
"Let’s go to the lab, there’s been so progress analyzing those accounts. Let’s eat sothing, and while waiting for the lab results and for Mr. Hu’s call, we can listen together."
Zhou Ning didn’t say anything because speaking was useless anyway. After washing his hands clean, they went upstairs.
It was only when they reached the lab that they discovered the staff inside were resting, all sprawled in various positions. The sofa chairs had been pieced together, and they seed unconcerned with comfort, it was apparent they were exhausted.
Xu Dayuan felt sowhat embarrassed when Mr. Zeng’s voice suddenly ca from the hallway.
"Make way, make way, it’s hot, let through quickly, quick quick quick!"
He shouted as he rushed to the door; Xu Dayuan wanted to stop him but it was too late. Mr. Qu and the two from the Economic Investigation Unit had already sat up, each with eyes red as if they were rabbits, eagerly sniffing the air.
Seeing this, Xu Dayuan stepped aside, and Mr. Zeng placed a large pile of lunch boxes on the table, delivering a smack to Mr. Qu’s bottom.
"Get up already, didn’t you want to eat the burnt bamboo shoots? I specially added extra to your portion. Oh and you two, there’s an extra sothing in yours too, see if it suits your taste."
As he spoke, he began distributing the lunch boxes to the three of them, then to Zhou Ning and the others. The lunch boxes, it must be said, were generously portioned; each one was large and contained rice and at least four kinds of dishes – just lifting the lid released an enticing aroma.
Everyone sat down, and those three red-eyed rabbits cracked open their chopsticks, rubbed them together, and started devouring the food.
Zhou Ning was indeed hungry, since autopsies consu both ntal and physical strength, and this particular autopsy, unlike the one with the nine female victims in Qidong, required combing through nearly every detail multiple tis. With so food, his mind wasn’t as dizzy as before.
"How is it, tastes good?"
"I think you’re better suited for logistics, where did you get this boxed lunch?"
Xu Dayuan’s words made Mr. Zeng laugh.
"The cafeteria had a power outage today, so I quickly asked for a lunch box, then called my mom. There’s a ton of food at ho prepared for the New Year, and we haven’t eaten at ho yet, so she made it all for us. How about it, my mom’s cooking is as good as a chef’s, right?"
Mr. Zhao was the first to stand up, moving directly beside Mr. Zeng and bumped him with his shoulder. However, he sowhat underestimated his own weight, and with that ’gentle’ bump, Mr. Zeng nearly toppled over to the other side. Mr. Zhao hurriedly pulled him back, chuckling as he said:
"It’s your mom’s cooking, no, our mom’s cooking. I’ll have to ask our mom if I can co over for als more often. With this kind of skill, it’s a wonder how she raised you so thin, you look like a scrawny chick."
"Scram, scram, scram, mooching food and still teasing , don’t try to get cozy with . If you guys like it, I’ll think about bringing so more of my mom’s delicious cooking next ti she makes it."
Everyone laughed and joked as they finished their als. Sun Gaotie took the initiative to clean up all the lunch boxes and even opened a window to air out the room. Xu Dayuan then turned his attention to the two economic investigation experts.
"Say it again, what you’ve found. It’s too technical, and I can’t describe it clearly. Mr. Zeng, start recording, then we’ll write it down and put it into the report later."
The man with glasses wasted no ti, quickly pointing to a diagram on the computer, explaining ticulously:
"We’ve looked into two companies that seed unrelated to Beishan Group, but from their business locations to profit and loss movents, they’re closely connected to Beishan Group. We’ve also traced several financial records that were paid out by Beishan. The records show goods paynts, but after several transactions, the money ended up in these two companies.
Look here, everything has been marked. It seems that whoever investigated these accounts put in a lot of effort. As for these two companies, they are now like blood bags for Guanghai Pharmaceutical Group, with the majority of the transferred funds coming out of these two companies.
As for the thirty billion missing on Guanghai Pharmaceutical Group’s books from 2009-2011, that is the total amount that was outflowed. As for where the money went, we followed up on this and found a scattered target, which, after many handovers, led to a suspicious one – Dayou Pharmaceuticals in Sapporo Country."
"Dayou Pharmaceuticals?"
Liu Yongxin narrowed his eyes, his face grave as he pursed his lips and looked at the others before speaking:
"During the ti Sapporo invaded Hua Country, many inhumane human experints were conducted, as well as the use of biochemical weapons like bacteria and poison gas against Hua Country. All of these tests were carried out by the Sapporo National dical Academy, infamous for its deeds. And this Dayou Pharmaceuticals is affiliated with Sapporo National dical Academy."
Xu Dayuan was stunned. The situation had already steered completely clear of a re criminal case—at all evidence was pointing towards transnational cri, and for a mont, he felt bewildered.
"Don’t rush. Let think this through. In 2008, relevant personnel from Beishan Group were dealt with, and most of their assets were confiscated. However, Beishan Group had already planned ahead.
They had transferred a part of their assets to several small companies no longer associated with Beishan Group. These were then pooled into Guanghai Pharmaceutical Group in batches and then from this group’s chemical companies, they cashed out the funds using various business thods and transferred them abroad, eventually flowing into Dayou Pharmaceuticals. Is that what you an?"
The man with glasses nodded vigorously, whether because Xu Dayuan understood him or because he was excited to have cleared up the issue, he seed elated.
"That’s right, that’s exactly it."
Zhou Ning knitted his brows tightly.
"At the beginning of 2009, Qin Xuejin was incarcerated for the cri of abetnt. Then on February 14th, 2009, Zhang Yinan, who must have heard so critical information, was found with her neck broken and dropped outside the Guanghai Pharmaceuticals building.
Upon examining the body, I noticed a faint scar on the index finger of Zhang Yinan’s right hand that matched the one in the photos on the storage card. She must have known sothing, but didn’t get the chance to pass it on before she was silenced.
Xu Da, have you considered the possibility that whoever threw Zhang Yinan from the building—although it was made to look like a suicide—was it actually a veiled warning to those who sent Zhang Yinan into the company, trying to steal information?"
Xu Dayuan suddenly looked up. His mind was sharp, and although he hadn’t thought much of Zhou Ning’s words initially, now it all clicked, and he stood up straight.
"If we analyze it from this angle, there were once rumors in the group that the vice chairman, Ren Guangzhi’s son, Ren Jingmin, had a well-known relationship with Zhang Yinan. Many targeted Zhang Yinan over this. Could it be that the warning was for Ren Jingmin?"
With that, Xu Dayuan took out his phone and dialed Liu Yufei’s number, carefully instructing her.
He told Liu Yufei to take people imdiately and secretly investigate everything about Ren Jingmin, from his work under the group’s control to his private life—all of it.
After hanging up the phone, Xu Dayuan looked at Zhou Ning.
"Keep talking, analyze from the perspective of the autopsies of these victims. Was this the work of a single killer?"
Zhou Ning walked to the whiteboard, where information on three autopsies was listed. Of course, Zhang Yinan’s was minimal, as it hadn’t been sorted yet. Reviewing the content, Zhou Ning slowly began:
"Based on the autopsies, my judgnt is that Fang Wenjie and Qin Xuejin were killed by the sa person—a male, left-handed, or more precisely, soone who uses a knife with their left hand. Although the killer tried to mislead us into thinking the murders weren’t by the sa person.
"The cut to Qin Xuejin’s neck was fatal in one strike. As for Fang Wenjie, he suffered multiple stab wounds, but no footprints were left at the scene, suggesting the killer had arranged the scene before Fang Wenjie’s arrival, which we’ve analyzed before.
"And now with the addition of Zhang Yinan, you can feel that the killer was very rushed when he killed her, lacking the composure he had with Qin Xuejin and Fang Wenjie. It felt like a spur-of-the-mont decision, as if a conversation was overheard, and in Zhang Yinan’s mont of shock, the killer took her out."
Xu Dayuan nodded slightly, still quite confident in Zhou Ning’s assessnt.
"That’s right, a spur-of-the-mont decision."
