Zhou Ning parked the car, hung up the call with Mr. He, and his head ached all the way from Mr. He’s nagging—the guy did nothing but show off. How should he even put it? Were all soon-to-be dads this restless?
Shaking his head, Zhou Ning quickly made his way to the office and saw that there were quite a number of people standing inside upon entering.
Several from the lab, plus a few people Xu Dayuan had brought with him, the office was already too crowded to enter. Glancing at Mr. Zhao, who had been squeezed to the edge of the crowd, Zhou Ning was puzzled.
"What’s going on here?"
Xu Dayuan heard the voice and waved his hand to the others.
"Hurry upstairs to the eting room, we’ve been waiting for you. We’ve brought so files over, and there are still more downstairs. We might as well put them in your eting room."
"Hold on, Director, what files are these?"
Xu Dayuan was holding a large stack, big boxes one after another; it was impossible to tell what they were from the outside.
"Cut the chatter. Didn’t we all agree on the day before the holiday that we would take over the 2004 4.14 kidnapping case? Mr. Hu also said he would prepare the relevant files for us. Did you forget everything after moving house during the holiday?"
Mr. Zhao was startled.
"Moving? When did you move, Zhou Xiaozhou? How co I didn’t know?"
Xu Dayuan looked up at the sky, his arms already struggling with the files. Pivoting, he deposited the boxes into Mr. Zhao’s arms and finally took a breather before continuing:
"The investigation isn’t public, so it’s not suitable to hold etings at the Criminal Police Brigade. I thought it would be more convenient at your place. I’ve spoken to your Mr. Peng. We’ll occupy the eting room for now. Clear now?"
Zhou Ning nodded, understanding that if he didn’t give a definite answer now, Xu Dayuan might lose his temper.
"Alright, everyone upstairs, get those files to the eting room. I’ll go find Mr. Peng first—let’s temporarily close off the fourth floor to others. Director Xu will send soone to guard the stairwell. After all, the case files involve leaks, and it’s very likely that it’s soone from our own departnt."
Xu Dayuan humd twice and was the first to head upstairs.
Zhou Ning quickly followed, with Mr. Zhao calling others to help move the materials. Once the people cleared out, Zhou Ning could see that the remaining space on the floor was filled with files. What was all this?
Didn’t Mr. Hu say there weren’t many files for this case?
With full curiosity, Zhou Ning went to the eting room but first stopped by Mr. Peng’s office. After knocking and being told to co in, he pushed the door open to find Cui Lili also present.
"Mr. Peng, should I co back later?"
Mr. Peng gestured with his hand.
"I was about to call you. Director Xu just called to requisition our eting room and the fourth floor area. Cooperate with that, please. There’s a case that needs a secret investigation. Also, Mr. Hu found —said you suggested to him purchasing new DNA testing equipnt for the forensic departnt. Mr. Hu approved it first thing this morning. I’m discussing the matter with Mr. Cui."
Cui Lili smiled at Zhou Ning. From the matter of her niece to fighting for new equipnt for their departnt, Zhou Ning always silently got things done. His character was beyond reproach.
"Thank you, Director Zhou. I’ll express my gratitude by making sure we provide cooperation wherever needed. Just let know in advance and I’ll assign soone to be on standby."
Zhou Ning smiled.
"Let’s not be so formal with each other. If anyone should be grateful, it’s us. You’ve always been busy when we are busy. With one case, sotis up to 3000 samples need to be tested, and that workload, even I think is too much. But the difficult thing with many dormant cases is the determination of evidence, and I feel this case will be no different."
Mr. Peng smiled.
When Cui Haibin was there before, his abilities were so-so, but he knew how to ingratiate himself, making Mr. Peng feel the prestige of being the chief.
But since Zhou Ning’s arrival, their technical capabilities had improved, and his own standing in the bureau had risen correspondingly. Now when Mr. Hu called him, it was more of a consultative tone, which was a new experience for him.
"We’ll be busy when we need to be. Don’t worry about bonuses and treatnt; I’ll have no sha in fighting for those. Just do your jobs, and leave the logistics to . Also, if the staff working overti need to eat, send them directly to the cafeteria. I’ve already explained—to serve our people on the spot, no waiting. If anyone fails to cooperate with work, let know, and I’ll handle them."
All three laughed. This was where Mr. Peng excelled, fully aware of his position and clear-sighted about everything, knowing what to do and say at the right tis.
Without further delay, Zhou Ning quickly returned to the eting room, only to be surprised to find that the conference table was now covered with all sorts of boxes.
"Are all these files from the 4.14 case?"
Xu Dayuan shook his head.
"Mr. Hu had people use the holiday ti to also pull personal information from various branches of the city bureau, as well as so investigations related to the 4.14 case. So of this includes press reports and content of subsequent investigations by others; it’s all sorted out but needs to be reviewed."
Zhou Ning stood in place for a while and spotted a box labeled autopsy reports; he reached out and pulled it out.
"Let’s focus on this. Each to their own expertise. Leave this detailed sorting to you guys. If Mr. Qu needs to help convert these into electronic docunts, you’ll find him. You can’t let us do all of this, and since we are investigating the case, it can’t just be the few of us, right?"
After finishing his statent, Zhou Ning looked around. This ti Xu Dayuan had only brought Mr. Zeng, Liu Yufei, and Mr. Bai over, with Tao Zhenshan not included. With the handling of Zhu Yunping’s case before, they had put Tao Zhenshan forward, so it seed this ti it was again for diversion.
