Elian’s POV

*****

[So the good news in all this is that you’re actually getting closer toward your goal of buying a mana core. Fantasies can co true... With help from a trustee system, of course.]

Elian’s hands were in his pockets as he lingered around the in-built garden after Kyren left him there.

But there was sothing strapped to his neck that made his face flush anyti he rembered who it ca from and how it was given to him.

[Thanks for the internal monologue... It brings to the not-so-good news. I have no clue what the necklace Kyren gave you is ant for. At all.]

Elian crossed his arms in front of his chest, rubbing his forehead with frustration. ’It’s obviously so kind of magic item. Maybe for... Protection?’

[Yes, I can sense the mana coming off it. But that’s just it. I don’t know what spell the mana is ant for. It could be a protective force shield. An invisibility spell. Heck, maybe it’ll turn you into a butterfly when shit hits the fan.]

Elian smiled sarcastically, finally leaning away from the bed of blazing red flowers he was staring at. "How helpful of you."

[You haven’t learnt your lesson of not talking to out loud? Seriously. Telling Kyren your secret isn’t enough for you?]

Elian breathed out softly, keeping his left hand in his pocket while brushing his fingers on the smooth surface of the blood-red gemstone attached to the necklace.

He walked slowly toward the garden’s exit, revelling in the serenity one last ti.

’How many Ascension points do I have currently?’ he asked the system curiously, withdrawing his hand from the necklace.

The system paused for a couple of seconds before projecting a single invisible holographic screen in front of his face.

[Total Ascension points: 550]

Goddess, have rcy.

He still needed over 500 more Ascension points to be able to afford a mana core.

[Don’t forget said mana core would be at the lowest level a witch could get. A beginner core. You’d need to find ways to empower your mana core if you ever want to break through.]

[But hey, don’t feel down. Even though all your stats are one point away from being an average werewolf, you’re far beyond the power of an Oga.]

[Heck, if you add in your Bond resonance skill and the strength Ascension pill still in your possession, you’d easily surpass an average werewolf and stand against a soldier-class wolf.]

Yada, yada, yada... All this was boring.

[To be fair, your life is basically boring outside of all the drama happening in it. Plus the presence of your mates.]

Elian rolled his eyes at the system’s last jab, brushing past the archway that marked the garden’s exit.

That was when he froze.

A ripple stirred in the shadows beyond the garden hall—sothing dark, cloaked and humanoid. The figure lingered only for a second, then shifted as if aware it had been spotted.

Elian’s heart basically sorsaulted in his chest.

’...You saw that, right?’ he whispered internally.

[Oh, I definitely saw the creepy black cloaked silhouette watching you from ten feet away. And I definitely recomnd: ignore it, turn around, and pretend you never did.]

Elian narrowed his eyes. ’Not a chance.’

[Of course. Because why listen to the highly advanced system designed to keep you alive when you could listen to the little voice in your head that says: "chase the shadowy stranger like it’s a horror movie."]

The figure slipped deeper into the darkness, brushing past a column and heading toward the servants’ passageway.

Elian quickened his pace, his boots light on the marble.

’They’re not supposed to be here. If they’re from Arcadia, or worse... the Dark Hand—’

[Plot twist: it’s just a palace maid out for an afternoon smoke. You’re about to traumatise so poor woman with your detective cosplay.]

Still, his instincts prickled. Every nerve scread that this wasn’t harmless.

The stranger moved with way too much purpose.

Elian ducked into the passage, the crystal lights flickering across the stone walls. He caught a flutter of the cloak as it disappeared around a bend.

He sped up.

[Fine, hero mode activated. But if this turns into a "spy leaves you unconscious in a ditch" mont, don’t say I didn’t warn you.]

He reached the corner and rounded it, readying himself for the worst...

...only to be t with nothing.

The hallway stretched into shadows, cold and empty, like the figure had been swallowed whole.

Elian’s breath hitched.

He scanned the ground, desperate for any sign. There—just at the base of the wall—a faint scuff, as if boots had pushed off it to climb.

He tilted his head back.

The spy was gone.

No trace. No sound. Nothing.

[Well, that was anticlimactic. Congratulations, you just chased a shadow, lost said shadow, and now you’re standing here alone like a protagonist begging for a jump scare.]

Elian cursed under his breath, pressing his palm against the cold wall. Whoever it was, they’d been skilled—skilled enough to vanish in plain sight.

And that cloak. The darkness surrounding them. It reminded him uncomfortably of all they’d discovered so far about the Dark Hand.

His stomach sank.

’Why do I feel like this is just the beginning?’

[Because it is, genius. And if I were you, I’d keep that necklace close. Sothing tells it’s going to do a lot more than turn you into a butterfly.]

Elian exhaled shakily, adjusting the chain at his throat before heading back toward the main halls, every step heavier with suspicion.

The serenity of the garden he left behind felt like a lifeti ago now.

He made his way through the hallways before finally getting to his room door.

Finally.

[You could rest on the soft bed and leave your door slightly open. You know... In case any of your mates decide to give you—]

’Does your lewdity know no end?’

He placed his hand on the doorknob, just about to open it.

But then—

[Alert... Mate number #2 incoming.]

He frowned, swerving his head toward the other end of the corridor where he spotted Axel, walking toward him with a warm smile.
