I could feel it.
He was going to chase out, and I would never have a shot at working at TechHub ever again. And I couldn’t even bla him for saying no. It was a miracle that he hadn’t already called security on and had dragged out of his office. After all, I was a cheater in his eyes.
But still, I held my breath in anticipation, hoping for the best outco. Maybe he would pity , maybe deep down he still cared, or maybe he would—
"You’re hired."
I blinked, still gaping at him in disbelief.
"What? Just like that? Am I dreaming?" I muttered out loud.
Amusent lit up his dark eyes. "Do you dream about often, Evelyn?"
I stamred, embarrassnt washed over . "I—I don’t—"
He stepped closer, and I could feel the heat radiating off his body. He was clearly enjoying this sohow.
"Report directly to the top floor tomorrow morning at eight," he said smoothly, and I watched as his lips curled into a smile. "You’ll be working under personally."
My eyes were wide as saucers. "What? You?"
"So you don’t want this job? I can always rescind this offer if—"
Working under my ex wasn’t part of my original plan, but I would take what I could for now. On the bright side, I secured a role at TechHub.
"Wait!" The word burst out of . "I do! I do!"
A smirk made its way onto his face as we locked eyes. "I didn’t realise I was proposing."
"I—I wasn’t—"
Heat crept up onto my cheeks, painting them red, and I quickly averted my gaze. I swear he was doing this on purpose.
A deep chuckle left his lips. "I’ll see you tomorrow morning."
"See you," I mumbled under my breath as I gave him a slight bow. "Thank you...for giving a chance."
I turned to leave, my hand reaching for the handle. But the door barely cracked open when his arm shot up in front of , shutting the door without a single warning.
He leaned closer towards , murmuring into my ear. "Leaving so quickly?"
I looked up at him to find his gaze already on , setting a fire ablaze in my chest.
He was close, way too close. I could feel his breath hot against the nape of my neck. My breath hitched in my throat, sending an involuntary shiver right down my spine.
"What...what are you—" I squeezed the words out of my throat only to be interrupted.
His arms trapped as my back was pressed against the hard wooden door behind . He moved even closer, his lips hovering over mine, only re inches away. If I had just made even the slightest move, our lips would definitely touch.
"Don’t you think it’s about ti we catch up?"
That was ironic coming from him. When we t the last ti, he seed like he wanted nothing to do with . But I didn’t say any of that, instead, the only word that left my lips was his na.
"Rhys..."
"Hm?"
"I—"
A knock echoed in the office space, startling . But he only backed away, and an unreadable look flashed past his dark eyes for a fleeting mont.
He cleared his throat. Unlike the erratic beating of my heart, his voice was calm and steady when he spoke. "Co in."
I stepped away as the door was pushed open from the outside. The receptionist’s eyes darted between the two of us for a mont. If she sensed anything or caught a glimpse of how disgustingly red my face probably was, she didn’t say a word about it.
Her eyes flitted to Rhys. "Mr Carson, Miss Valeria is here to see you for the partnership discussion."
"Sure, let her know I will see her soon." He turned back to face this ti, his eyes holding mine captive. "I would like to have a word with my new executive assistant."
A soft gasp left her parted lips, but she remained professional nonetheless. "Right, of course. No problem, I will inform Miss Valeria," she announced before heading out, leaving just the two of us alone again.
I wasn’t about to stay any longer. Seizing the chance, I tried to slip out through the gap only to feel his fingers wrapped around my wrist.
I looked back at him, shock evident in my eyes.
"Don’t disappoint by not showing up tomorrow. Tell right now if you want to change your mind."
"I...I’m not going to change my mind."
He released his grip on , and his sharp features seed to soften slightly under the glow of the office lights.
"Good."

My ex reappearing in my life seven years later and becoming my new boss wasn’t what I imagined for myself. Was my life sohow turning into a romance web novel?
After taking in a deep breath, I smoothed down my skirt and stepped into the office to be imdiately greeted by the receptionist behind the huge marbled counter. It was the sa woman from yesterday.
Natasha.
Her brown eyes lit up with recognition when her gaze landed on . "Good morning, Mrs Smith." I greeted her back with a smile on my face. "This way, please," she said, gesturing towards the brightly lit office.
The office was huge, but it was expected for a big listed company like TechHub. I was in early today, and barely half the office was filled. The sound of typing and soft chatters filled the place. I quietly followed behind her as she brought to my desk. A laptop and monitor were already set up for . On the desk, there was even a small potted plant and an old-fashioned calendar.
I set my bag down and settled into the seat. But before I even had the chance to get comfortable, a familiar voice reached my ears.
I knew that voice.
"Get in my office now. We need to talk."
