"You drive."
Chloe Reed opened the back door and got in.
Daniel Hayes agreed and got into the driver’s seat. "Miss Reed, where to?" he asked.
Chloe Reed pressed her temples. "Maplewood Gardens."
’I can’t go back to the hospital in this state. Grandma will definitely see that sothing’s wrong.’
"You got it."
The car started up again, and traffic on the road gradually began to flow normally.
’Who knows what Walker Grant did just to find , to cut off.’
Chloe Reed stared out the car window, her heart a hollow void. A cold wind seed to whistle through it, leaving her numb to everything.
Back at Maplewood Gardens, she took a hot shower and sent her grandmother a ssage saying she wouldn’t be coming over tonight.
Her grandmother sent back a voice ssage, her tone kind and gentle. "Then get so good rest. My sweet girl has just been too tired lately."
Chloe Reed curled into a ball, and listening to her grandmother’s voice brought a small asure of peace to her heart.
Just then, her phone vibrated again. She opened it to see a ssage from Preston Vance.
Preston Vance: [Are you back?]
Preston Vance: [I saw your lights are on. Full disclosure, I’m not intentionally spying on you. My house is just right behind yours, after all.]
Chloe Reed: [Yeah, I ca back tonight.]
Preston Vance: [How’s your grandmother’s recovery going?]
Chloe Reed: [She’s doing well. Thanks for asking.]
Preston Vance: [You’re being too formal. Aren’t we friends?]
Chloe Reed: [We are.]
Preston Vance: [I think I saw you at the cetery today, but I was afraid I was mistaken, so I didn’t ssage you. Were you there?]
Chloe Reed: [Yes, I was. Today is the anniversary of Julian Grant’s death.]
Preston Vance: [I’ve heard of him. He was brilliant. Such a sha.]
Preston Vance: [You seem to really dislike Mr. Grant, but you have a good opinion of Julian Grant.]
Preston Vance: [Wasn’t he your adoptive sister’s husband?]
Chloe Reed: [They’re not the sa.]
Preston Vance: [I see. It’s getting late, so I won’t bother you anymore.]
Chloe Reed: [Okay. You get so rest too. Good night.]
She turned off her phone and rolled over, but she couldn’t fall asleep no matter how hard she tried.
Every ti she closed her eyes, the image of Walker Grant’s body, half-soaked in blood, would flash through her mind.
She frowned, trying desperately to shake the image, but it wouldn’t go away.
’This is so infuriating!’
’Whether he lives or dies, what does it have to do with ?’
Chloe Reed grabbed a pillow, covered her head, and forced herself to sleep.
After a night full of nightmares, she woke up the next day and was left speechless by the dark circles under her eyes.
She put on so light makeup to hide her haggard appearance. Today was Tuesday, the day they could go finalize the divorce.
’Since he promised , he shouldn’t back out now.’
As the thought crossed her mind, her expression froze for a second.
’Then again, how many tis has he gone back on his word?’
’Will he back out this ti, too?’
She clutched her phone tightly and dialed his number anyway.
It rang three tis before the call connected.
"Chloe."
The person who answered was Nathaniel Monroe, and he sounded exhausted.
Chloe Reed said, "He promised we would get divorced today."
Nathaniel Monroe sighed. "Walker’s still in the hospital. He lost a lot of blood last night and hasn’t woken up yet."
Chloe Reed’s grip on her phone tightened. "What did the doctor say?"
Nathaniel Monroe replied, "There’s nothing the doctors can do. We can only wait for him to wake up on his own."
Chloe Reed lowered her gaze slightly and acknowledged, "Okay, I understand."
With that, she hung up.
"Chloe..." Nathaniel called out to her just then. "Don’t you want to co to the hospital to see him? He’s really badly hurt."
