We arrived at the outskirts of the village as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of amber and crimson. The place was eerily silent, with an unsettling stillness hanging in the air. Shinobu was at my side, her delicate fra radiating calm determination. It was just the two of us for this mission.

Shalltear had insisted on accompanying , of course, but I’d firmly told her to stay behind. This wasn’t a battlefield for overwhelming brute force, And I wish to have so alone ti with Shinobu.

But I already sensed so of Shalltear’s [Household] summon in the distance, hiding in the shadows.

Shinobu’s voice broke the silence. "From what I’ve gathered, this village is infested with multiple demons. That in itself is unusual. Demons are solitary by nature—territorial, even. For so many of them to gather in one place... it suggests coordination."

"Coordination or control," I mused, scanning the deserted streets. The remnants of the village told a grim story. Doors hung open on their hinges, abandoned belongings scattered everywhere. There were no signs of life, no cries for help—only the faint tallic tang of blood carried on the breeze.

Shinobu nodded, her gaze sharp. "Exactly. Either these demons are being directed by a stronger force, or sothing is compelling them to behave unnaturally. We’ll need to be cautious."

I smiled faintly, the corner of my mouth lifting in amusent. "You worry too much. A handful of demons doesn’t sound like much of a challenge."

Her eyes flicked toward , the corners of her lips curving into a faint smile. "Confidence is a double-edged sword, Alex-san. Let’s hope yours doesn’t dull when we’re surrounded."

She already knew the answer to that but still lectured .

I chuckled softly, the banter easing the tension between us. "Fair enough. Lead the way, then. I’m eager to see how you handle yourself in action."

She gave a small nod and began moving forward, her footsteps impossibly light on the dirt path. I followed, keeping a casual pace but staying alert. My senses were on high alert, and I could already feel the faint presence of sothing malevolent lurking nearby.

As we ventured deeper into the village, the signs of demonic activity grew more apparent. Deep claw marks scored the walls of houses, and dark splatters stained the ground—evidence of violence that had unfolded not too long ago.

Shinobu paused suddenly, holding up a hand to signal to stop. "They’re close," she whispered, her voice barely audible but carrying a weight of certainty.

I glanced around, sharpening my senses. The air felt heavier here, charged with a sinister energy that prickled at the edges of my awareness. "How many?" I asked a question to which I already knew the answer.

"Three, maybe four. Spread out, but closing in fast," she replied, her hand already reaching for her blade. Her deanor shifted, the calm and polite façade giving way to sothing colder, more focused.

"Let guess," I said, cracking my knuckles, "you want to sit back and observe your ’techniques.’"

"Sothing like that," she replied, her tone light despite the situation. "You’ll get your turn soon enough. Just try to keep up."

Before I could respond, a guttural growl echoed through the air, followed by the sound of sothing heavy scraping against the ground. From the shadows of a nearby alley, a hulking figure erged—a demon, its twisted form barely resembling anything human. Its claws were long and sharp, and its glowing yellow eyes locked onto us with predatory intent.

Two more figures appeared shortly after, their movents jerky but deliberate. Each demon was distinct, but they shared an unsettling similarity in their auras—sothing frenzied, almost rabid.

"Three," Shinobu confird, her grip tightening on her blade. "I’ll take the first two. The last one is yours."

I raised an eyebrow, but before I could reply, she was already moving. In a flash, she closed the distance to the first demon, her movents fluid and precise. Her blade glead in the fading light as she struck, a blur of motion that ended with the demon collapsing in a heap, its body already dissolving.

The second demon lunged at her from the side, but she anticipated the attack effortlessly, dodging with a graceful spin and delivering another swift slash. Her fighting style was srizing—elegant yet deadly, every movent calculated to maximize efficiency.

anwhile, the third demon had turned its attention to , its lips pulled back in a snarl. "Well, looks like it’s my turn," I said, cracking my neck as I stepped forward.

The demon lunged, its claws swiping at with surprising speed. I sidestepped the attack easily, my hand darting out to grab its wrist. It struggled against my grip, its strength considerable but no match for mine. With a flick of my wrist, I slamd the creature into the ground, the impact creating a small crater.

"Not much of a challenge," I remarked, my tone casual as I summoned a blade, a holy sword to be precise, of my own. The demon hissed and thrashed, trying to free itself, but I ended its struggle quickly, driving my blade through its chest.

As the demon disintegrated into ash, I turned to see Shinobu sheathing her sword. She looked as composed as ever, not a single strand of her hair out of place. "Efficient," I said, giving her an approving nod.

"And you’re as strong as I expected," she replied, her tone neutral but with a hint of amusent. "Though I imagine you could’ve ended that even faster."

"Where’s the fun in that?" I said with a grin.

She shook her head, but there was a faint smile on her lips. "Let’s keep moving. If these three were here, there are likely more nearby. And we still don’t know what’s causing their unusual behavior."

"Lead the way, then," I said, gesturing for her to continue.
