Yan Feifan was baffled by Mr. Qi’s sudden outburst.
But the man was a major figure at the hospital, so Yan Feifan couldn’t just ask him outright.
Yan Feifan straightened up, his attitude respectful. "Mr. Qi, I assure you, I’ve morized it. Please, feel free to test ."
Yan Feifan wasn’t lying.
Since waking up from his coma, he’d discovered his mory had improved on a fundantal level.
If he made an effort to rember sothing, he could recite it perfectly after a single, focused read-through.
Yan Feifan guessed this was what people ant when they said the more you use your brain, the sharper it gets.
’During the long period when my body was comatose but my mind was awake, all that ti spent delving into mories, visualizing concepts, and running ntal simulations must have led to a deep developnt of my brain.’
Seeing Yan Feifan’s nonchalant, "ask anything" attitude only stoked Mr. Qi’s anger.
His professional decorum allowed him to suppress his anger. He asked, feigning calmness, "Fine, fine..."
"You keep insisting you’ve morized it all, so I’ll start asking."
"Let’s start with sothing simple..."
"Patient’s age, height, and weight!"
Yan Feifan replied in a quiet voice, "Mr. Qi, the patient’s na is Lehong. She is currently fourteen years and five months old, 162 centiters, and 43.4 kilograms."
"Urinalysis?"
Yan Feifan answered, his tone even, "Mr. Qi, the urinalysis conducted at our hospital shows a pH of 6.2 and a specific gravity of 1.01."
"Other indicators such as nitrites, red and white blood cell count, bilirubin, and urine glucose were all normal."
This flawless recitation left Qee Sheng a little surprised.
He swiped his finger across the tablet screen a few tis and suddenly asked, "What about the patient’s liver function test results from Jinling Hospital?"
Yan Feifan answered without a mont’s hesitation. "ALT 24, AST 26. Total serum protein 68, serum globulin 23, alkaline phosphatase 76..."
The look of surprise on Qee Sheng’s face deepened.
He swiped the screen again and cut him off. "And the liver function results from Su Province Ard Police General Hospital?"
"ALT 26, AST 25."
"Total serum protein 62, serum globulin 21, alkaline phosphatase 71..."
"Alright, that’s enough."
Qee Sheng cut Yan Feifan off again, a look of pure astonishnt on his face. "I believe you. You really did morize it all."
Sizing up Yan Feifan, he clucked his tongue in amazent. "I never would have guessed you have a photographic mory. No wonder they call you a genius."
"I’d only ever heard of people with the ability to rember everything they see. This is the first ti I’ve witnessed it firsthand!"
"Impressive, very impressive..."
After the praise, Qee Sheng offered so guidance. "Xiaoyan, an extraordinary mory is just the foundation for success."
"To beco a truly great physician, you must be adept at applying your knowledge, efficiently analyzing and distilling information and data."
Seeing Yan Feifan listening with rapt attention, Qee Sheng nodded in satisfaction. He then asked expectantly, "Xiaoyan, since you’ve morized the entire patient file, do you have any thoughts on the cause of her illness?"
Qee Sheng imdiately added, "Feel free to speak your mind."
"Say whatever cos to mind. Don’t be afraid of being wrong, no one will laugh at you."
"When it cos to difficult cases, our approach has always been to think outside the box—hypothesize boldly, but verify ticulously."
Yan Feifan considered this for a mont before speaking. "Mr. Qi, before I share my thoughts, I’d like to speak with the patient alone to confirm a few things."
Before Mr. Qi could even respond, We Xin cut in, her voice edged with displeasure. "Mr. Yan, I was the one who took the patient’s history and did the initial assessnt."
"I’ve recorded everything in her chart."
"Are you implying my notes aren’t comprehensive? That I missed sothing?"
Yan Feifan ignored her and looked directly at Mr. Qi. "Mr. Qi, what I need to confirm is whether the patient is sexually active."
"And did the edema and stinging pain appear after sexual activity?"
We Xin let out a sarcastic little laugh. "Mr. Yan, I thought you had a photographic mory."
"The chart clearly states she’s only fourteen and has repeatedly denied ever having a boyfriend."
"And besides..."
We Xin stressed, "A gynecological exam clearly indicated her hyn is perfectly intact."
"Did you happen to miss that test result?"
"Or perhaps you just couldn’t morize it?"
Ignoring her taunts, Yan Feifan stated calmly, "Non-penetrative sexual acts, or even masturbation, can cause enough ntal and physical arousal to lead to pelvic congestion."
He turned his gaze back to Qee Sheng and stated his theory plainly. "Mr. Qi, I suspect the patient has Pelvic Congestion Syndro, caused by underdeveloped pelvic vein valves!"
Just then, the large doctor spoke up, questioning, "Mr. Yan, as far as I know, Pelvic Congestion Syndro has never been diagnosed in a patient this young, has it?"
Pelvic Congestion Syndro resulting from the malformation of pelvic vein valves is a relatively rare gynecological condition.
When a woman is sexually stimulated, her pelvic region becos engorged with blood.
The valves within the veins act as one-way gates to prevent the backflow of blood.
When pelvic vein valves are underdeveloped or absent, arousal causes a rise in abdominal pressure, which can obstruct blood flow in the pelvic veins and even cause it to reverse.
This local congestion then impedes overall circulation, causing systemic edema and pain, particularly in the abdon and thighs.
Once the pooled blood in the pelvis gradually dissipates and overall circulation returns to normal, the edema and pain subside.
At this, Qee Sheng said slowly, "If the pelvic vein valves have been malford since birth, the congestion syndro can be triggered by external factors at any age."
He looked at Yan Feifan and asked, "Edema and stinging pain... There are dozens of conditions associated with those two symptoms."
"Why did you single this one out, Xiaoyan?"
Facing the stares of Mr. Qi, We Xin, the large doctor, and the others, Yan Feifan remained composed. "Any patient who makes it to the diagnostics departnt," he said, "has already had at least ninety-nine percent of common and uncommon diseases ruled out."
"That leaves three possibilities: a rare and difficult-to-diagnose illness, a complex composite of conditions that is hard to identify, or a new disease not yet discovered or docunted by the dical community."
After a brief pause, Yan Feifan continued his analysis. "The patient presents with too few symptoms, making a composite disease highly unlikely."
"As for a novel, undiscovered disease, that’s beyond the scope of my current diagnostic capabilities."
"So, I focused on the limited list of rare diseases known to cause edema and stinging pain, and I compared them one by one."
Yan Feifan went on, "The patient stated that her symptoms, including the edema, first appeared in mid-February of last year."
He added, with a touch of emphasis, "There’s a major holiday in mid-February. Valentine’s Day."
"Systemic edema is a sign of a rather severe case of Pelvic Congestion Syndro."
"Furthermore, none of the patient’s test results point specifically to any other condition."
"Therefore, I hypothesize that this is a sudden flare-up of a congenital defect, triggered by external stimuli."
"Taking all that into account..."
Yan Feifan concluded confidently, "I am making a bold hypothesis: the patient is suffering from Pelvic Congestion Syndro caused by malford pelvic vein valves."
Qee Sheng nodded, chuckling lightly. "Not bad, not bad at all! That fits our mantra of ’hypothesize boldly, verify ticulously’..."
Just then, a cell phone on the desk suddenly rang urgently.
Qee Sheng got up, walked over to the desk, and answered his phone.
"What?"
"How is she now?"
"Okay, I’m on my way!"
His face etched with worry and urgency, Qee Sheng ended the call and pocketed his phone. He gave a command to Yan Feifan and the others: "I need to step out."
"Xiaoyan, We Xin, you two question the patient again. And run a pelvic venography."
"The rest of you will wait for the test results and continue the discussion..."
As for the reason for Mr. Qi’s hasty departure, Yan Feifan and We Xin learned it from a nurse on their way to the patient’s ward.
Stunned by the news, Yan Feifan couldn’t help but marvel at how quickly the hospital grapevine worked.
Mr. Qi’s student, the famous Dr. Qin Ying, an expert in limb reattachnt surgery, nicknad the "Abbess of Extinction"... had attempted suicide by taking pills...
