Thomas Shannon furrowed his brows, his irritation clear. "Get lost!"
"Young Master, you have to et Madam tomorrow. You can’t go without drinking the hangover soup."
After Charlie River’s incessant nagging, Thomas Shannon finally relented and drank the hangover soup.
Setting the bowl down, Charlie River let out a sigh of relief. Minimus Hart, who had been standing by silently, noticed him wipe sweat from his brow. "Charlie River, you’re tired too," she said. "I’ll watch over the Young Master. You go and rest."
"There’s no need. I’ll watch over him myself."
The feeling of not being trusted was truly awful.
Minimus Hart’s smile stiffened. "Charlie River, do you not trust ?"
Charlie River rely smiled without a word.
"Do you think I’ll be as foolish as Raina Bell and develop feelings for the Young Master that go beyond loyalty?"
Charlie River looked directly at Minimus Hart. "You’re overthinking things."
It’s better to have less contact with won, such unreliable creatures. Raina Bell was a living example. Now that the Young Master was drunk again, he couldn’t allow another female slave a chance to get near him. Otherwise, everyone would be in trouble when the Young Master woke up! Charlie River’s mission was to nip any such trouble in the bud, to prevent such incidents from happening again.
Minimus Hart didn’t want to embarrass herself further. Since Charlie River had made his stance clear, her continued presence would only be inviting humiliation.
"Take good care of the Young Master." With those words, she turned and left.
Charlie River stood by the bedside. Perhaps the hangover soup was taking effect, because a short while later, Thomas Shannon asked for water.
"Young Master, wait a mont. I’ll get you so water."
Charlie River brought the water over. Thomas Shannon struggled to sit up and took a few sips. His furrowed brow gradually relaxed.
Handing the water cup back to Charlie River, he lay down again.
He raised his hand, laying it over his eyes, and asked in a low voice, "Charlie River, was I not good enough to her?"
"Young Master, are you talking about the maniac?"
"Who else but that ingrate?"
When she threw tantrums and demanded treatnt for her throat, he had the doctor attend to it. When she was determined to restore her looks, he even persuaded William Guillen—making his mother agree to a date with Old Mr. Standford as a condition—to get George Stanford to perform reparative surgery on her. He admitted that he had indeed wronged her in so respects.

Charlie River had never been in love and didn’t understand much about the feelings between n and won. However, as an observer, he felt he saw things quite clearly. "Young Master," he began, "I’m going to tell you the truth. Please don’t be angry."
"Let’s hear it."
Charlie River steeled himself. "It’s undeniable that you’ve treated the maniac well, Young Master. But have you ever considered that your... fickleness might make her doubt your sincerity? Also, if the maniac found out that during the incident with the quicksand in the desert, you were the first to discover it and pressed the locator alarm to send us a signal... she would never trust you again."
Thomas Shannon sneered, his laughter low and deep, carrying a hint of cold desolation in the deadly silent night. "The quicksand was indeed an accident. It was only when it appeared that I made the snap decision to save her, even if it ant sacrificing myself, just to move her. And she was genuinely moved. She even said she liked ."
After a pause, Thomas Shannon sneered again, his voice now laced with a hint of malice. "Charlie River, do you realize? Sophie Sullivan is an out-and-out fraud!"
"Young Master, why do you say that?"
"In the desert, the one who said she liked ..."
