Yun Xiao finally smiled contently.
The old wooden hut, the low bed, the lingering smell of fish in the air, and a warm lady by his side—suddenly, he felt a happiness like never before.
“Yun Xiao, talk about your parents,” Xia Dabao said idly.
She felt they had to talk, or it would be awkward.
“My parents? I have only a vague impression of them,” Yun Xiao said. He only remembered lying on his mother’s lap as she hummed a song to him, nothing else.
“So how did you grow up…”
“I was picked up by elder Yun,” Yun Xiao said, “but I don’t remember how we got separated, or why I even came here. I just grew up practicing martial arts.”
“You’re quite pitiable,” Xia Dabao remarked.
As they were talking, Yun Xiao had already shifted position, lying beside Xia Dabao.
Xia Dabao was startled and was about to get up.
However, Yun Xiao casually said, “Don’t worry, I won’t do anything. I just don’t want you to smell my stinky feet.”
With that, Xia Dabao quietly lay down.
Yun Xiao then said, “The first time I saw you, it felt like seeing my mother.”
“But I’m not that old,” Xia Dabao said with a laugh.
“I know, it just feels familiar,” Yun Xiao replied and then gazed at Xia Dabao.
Xia Dabao looked back at his handsome face.
The air seemed to solidify suddenly.
Then Yun Xiao moved a bit closer, and even closer.
Just as their lips were about to touch, Xia Dabao turned her face away.
“Yun Xiao, you’re engaged,” she reminded him.
Yun Xiao did not make another move, and the cabin became quiet again.
Soon after, Yun Xiao’s snoring filled the small hut.
Xia Dabao soon fell into a dozy sleep.
They lay like that until it was dark.
Xia Dabao woke first, feeling somewhat dazed, then looked at Yun Xiao.
Perhaps by some unspoken agreement, Yun Xiao also opened his eyes at that moment. He first looked at Xia Dabao and then sat up.
Due to his injuries, it was somewhat painful, and he held his chest after sitting up.
“How are your injuries?” Xia Dabao asked with concern.
Yun Xiao shook his head, indicating that he was fine.
“Do you still need medicine powder? If you do, I can help apply it on your back,” Xia Dabao offered.
Yun Xiao still shook his head: “Once a day is enough, it’s already much better.”
Now that they were lying on the same bed, Xia Dabao felt a bit awkward, so she found an excuse, “I’ll go check if your clothes are dry.”
“Mhm,” Yun Xiao replied.
Xia Dabao had washed his clothes and hung them on a broken bamboo pole outside. She took the clothes down and sniffed them; they no longer smelled of blood.
The clothes were black and had some holes from wolf claws but were thick and very warm.
As Xia Dabao was about to bring the clothes inside, she turned and saw a blurry figure.
Yun Xiao was already standing at the door.
She hurried back and handed him his clothes: “Won’t you sleep a bit longer?”
“I’ve slept enough,” Yun Xiao took his clothes and put them on, then asked Xia Dabao, “Are you hungry?”
“I’m not really hungry, I ate too much in the afternoon. Besides, it’s too dangerous to go out now that it’s dark. We better not take risks; let’s wait until tomorrow morning.”
