"Jasmine, can I leave picking out jobs to you?"
While Avery discussed things with Grito, he tasked Jasmine with picking through the ever increasing of protection requests coming into the rcenary Association.
All of them were urgent and most were offering high rewards, but there was no point in being hasty. Taking a few minutes to collect information and get a full read on the situation would only help in the long run. Stay updated through Freewebnovel
"Okay, Grito, do you mind telling us what is going on? You want us to rescue your uncle, but clearly sothing more is going on. Those guys after you on the way here weren’t common thugs." Avery said, his expression stern.
On the way to the hangar a few groups of clearly well-trained individuals had ambushed them.
They were lucky in that it seed that these people were caught off guard by Grito being with them, but had they been properly prepared for this unexpected situation, things could have turned sour quickly.
There was also the fact that the current terrorist attack was suspiciously coinciding with the young Baccigan’s escape. The two n that had been trying to recapture him were in possession of out-of-date police uniforms and badges. Not sothing the average crook could get ahold of. It might have all been a coincidence, but Avery’s instincts were telling him otherwise.
Unfortunately, Grito hardly knew what the situation surrounding his uncle was either.
"After learning about the hit placed on by the Odium Syndicate, I found out they were targeting my uncle as well. We both went into hiding after that. He used to be a professor of engineering at a big institution in the capital. When those n ca for , I thought it was the syndicate, but they’re not related as far as I can tell. Otherwise, I’d already be dead. Whoever abducted us is having us is having my uncle build sothing for them. I don’t know what though."
Avery wanted to shake his head and sigh at how many conspiracies Grito and his uncle seed to have been wrapped up in, and the lack of information Grito had. It seed that unlike with the Odium Syndicate, he was the one caught in the middle of his uncle’s trouble this ti.
However, this ant that Grito had very little to go on. Like who was holding his uncle or where to find him.
"But I think I know a way to track them. They let talk to my uncle once a day to prove that I was still alive and in good health so that he would keep working. If you take back to where I was being held, I should be able to trace the calls." Grito said, his tone becoming desperate.
He could already see that he was losing Avery’s interest. No one was going to go off blindly on a rescue mission when they had no idea where their target was or who they were up against.
"This is starting to sound like a major pain. I want to help, but we’ve got other work to do." Avery said, looking towards Jasmine.
She nodded and showed him a list of requests she had picked out. While they talked, the battles all over the colony raged on. Waiting too long would see things being wrapped up before they could join.
"Thirty million Krenin! I can pay you that much as long as you save my uncle!"
Hearing this number imdiately caught Avery’s, Ezra’s, and Kaiden’s attention. That much money was quite a bit even for them. It would take them collectively between two and three months to make that much even if they worked the most profitable jobs they could find nonstop.
"Do you really have that much?" Ezra asked skeptically.
Grito gulped under his intense gaze, and said, "Not in Krenin. But I have so things stashed away in a few places that when sold would total around that amount. If you help out now, I promise to give it all to you guys."
The lucrative job they were being offered suddenly seed a lot more dicey. Avery did not want to risk his life and the lives of his team for a promise of goods that may or may not exist.
"Where did you even get these things, huh? Are they stollen or contraband?" Kaiden said, grilling Grito.
"Um, none of its illegal. But it did, um… used to belong to the Odium Syndicate."
Grito swiftly explained that he used to work for the criminal organization as a technician after his parents died. He helped fix ships, created cloaking devices to prevent their smugglers’ cargo bays from being scanned, and other jobs in the sa vein. He was pretty much just their go to guy for anything related to technology .
Once he finally worked up the nerve to leave though, he absconded with a bunch of equipnt and a ship and went to the Alliance Police. In exchange for clency, he offered to testify against the mbers of the organization he knew about.
Of course, this ant that the items Grito was offering were stolen, but since they had been owned by a criminal enterprise, it was doubtful any report was going to be filed about the theft. An illegal drug syndicate was hardly the type to go to the police after all.
Still, this definitely was starting to dip into a gray area. Accepting the equipnt Grito had taken as paynt might lead to the Odium Syndicate coming after them. This was certainly a risky venture.
"Okay, what do you guys think?" Avery asked, wanting to get the opinion of his group mbers before making a decision.
"I’m against it. They’re no guarantee of paynt, and we’d have to go out of our way to collect the items that are hidden throughout multiple systems."
With Ezra dissent, Avery looked towards Kaiden for his answer.
"Gah, let’s just help him out. It feels dangerous but I think that there’s a possibility for more value in this than expected. Whoever is pulling the strings here has to be up to no good. We might co across so high bounties along the way and make even more money."
Avery was a bit surprised by Kaiden’s softhearted answer since he had been expecting him to turn down the request as well.
’It’s almost as if he seems sympathetic.’ Avery thought, carefully analyzing Kaiden’s tone and expression.
He then glanced towards Kasandra and could see a similar look of concern on her face. He was still unsure of what had occurred with their family in the past, but the longer he spent with them, the more he felt that it had not been a pleasant parting for them.
When he asked Kassandra about what she thought about the situation, she conveyed her desire to help Grito as well.
Jasmine was already looking at him expectantly, obviously wanting to help out the unfortunate guy that just wanted to save the last family mber he had left.
"Fine, it seems that we’ll be helping you out. But first we need to wait until order is restored to the colony. To that end, let’s go help the police clean up so terrorists."
