The dark, sickly strand of dark brown energy that had reached out to Avery was suddenly pushed back and a wave of orange light rushed down it towards the monster that had tried to take control of him.

Avery was the only one who could actually visualize what was going on, but even Liesel felt the sudden appearance of so sort of massive pressure

At once, all of the monsters that had been on standby began to stir.

Each of the other four commanders had been waiting while their comrade was attempting to force its will over Avery.

Now that it had failed though, he was now designated as an anomaly of the highest level of danger that needed to be eliminated imdiately.

However, while the monsters were still getting ready to charge at him, the burst of energy he had sent out finally reached the space monster that was controlling the Hinvieners.

The enormous creature shuddered as the orange glow entered its body from the very psychic connection it had created.

For a few seconds it writhed around before enormous head that looked like it was a completely flat surface slit in two and opened up into a giant mouth.

No sound reached him through the void of space, but Avery was certain that the monster was screaming in agony.

Whatever he had done to it must have hurt it a lot.

"Serves you right. I’m going to be nursing the headache you gave for hours."

Avery was understandably pissed off right now, and watching the source of his recent tornt writhing around in pain certainly made him feel a bit better.

He watched for a few more seconds and saw that dark green blood was bursting out of the thing’s body in several places.

His energy must have been more destructive than he thought if it was causing such a gigantic being to bleed like that.

The Hinvieners who were also normally under the control of the monster were beginning to act erratically. Throwing the rest of the ranks of space monsters into chaos.

It seed that without their leader keeping them under control, they really did lose a semblance of comradery with the other types of creatures.

Regrettably, Avery’s attack did not seem to be enough to kill the enormous commander space monster outright.

Right now, it was rely injured. With ti it would likely fully recover.

"Avery! You f*cker! If you don’t talk to this instant, I’m going to forcefully dock our ships and blast open your goddamn airlock!"

Liesel’s very irate voice reached Avery’s ears and snapped him back to reality.

After everything that had happened, he had been stuck in a bit of a daze and what focus he had regained was aid towards the hordes of space monsters.

Obviously, he had not ant to ignore Liesel. His mind had just been elsewhere, and he had montarily forgotten about her.

Sothing he certainly regretted, since this was the first ti he had heard her shouting explitives at him. A clear sign that she was incredibly upset.

"Sorry Liesel, that thing was attacking psychically sohow. I pushed through it though and am fine now. I’ll explain more later when we’re safe. Let’s get out of here before those monsters reach us." Avery said hastily so that Liesel did not take any drastic asures.

Thankfully, when she responded, the anger had completely vanished from her voice.

Her strong emotions in the mont had been because of how worried she was. So once Avery finally confird that he was okay, she was relieved and cald down.

The two of them swiftly turned their ships around and prepared to jump to light speed.

Several Fluem were already racing towards them at high speed.

But just before the fast space monsters could get in range, Avery’s and Liesel’s ships blink away as they activated their light speed drives.

Now they were traveling at a speed that none of the space monsters could keep up with and that would keep them safe for the mont at least.

Avery divulged to Liesel about what had happened and gave her more information about how his body was changing due to so old genetic code in his body that had been activated after he had received bionic augntations.

"Doctor Raiti has already confird that it’s not dangerous, and that its actually making stronger. The problem this ti is that I’ve gained so sort of extrasensory perception ability, and that’s what allowed that creature to reach out to . I think that Zefield’s lieutenant Petris might also be at risk since he’s a Vensian with unusual physic powers."

Liesel was quiet for several monts before she finally responded after taking all of this in.

"I see, so this is what Kasandra and Jasmine were warning about. They told to be extra careful thanks to your penchant for trouble either finding you, or you jumping into it willingly. This seems like one of the tis when it was uncontrollable, and it is partially my fault since I’m the one that brought you out here in the first place. So, I’m sorry for dragging you into sothing like this and yelling at you."

After everything had been cleared up, Liesel was feeling a bit guilty for cussing Avery out.

Everything had seed so incompressible to her at the ti. She had no idea why he had been ignoring her. To her, there had been nothing going on that should have stopped their communications.

The only thing she could think of was that he was frozen in fear or sothing. Which really did not seem like him, which is why she had been yelling at him to co to his senses.

"Don’t worry about it. I’d beco just as frantic if the sa thing happened to you. I’m honestly glad you were that concerned for ." Avery replied cheerfully so that Liesel would not let sothing like this get her down.

For several minutes the two of them talked back and forth with each other to help keep their nerves down.

Still, in the back of their minds, it was impossible for them to forget the massive army of monsters that had been amassed. No doubt as a ans to wipe out the entity of the rcenary force Zefield had gathered.

While Avery’s retributive attack had likely slowed the space monsters down, it was certain that once the commander he had injured was recovered that they would innate an all-out war.

The rcenaries Zefield had brought were strong, but their numbers were heavily lacking compared to their enemies.

While every ship they had might have been able to take down more than one space monster and depending on the vessel and pilot potential they could be worth hundreds or even thousands of the creatures.

Nevertheless, they were up against a swarm that was around a million strong. It was not a fight that they could probably win.

"We’ll have to tell Zefield and the others what we found. Depending on what decision he makes, we may have to cut our losses and break the contract. I won’t bring us into a suicide mission."

Avery knew that there was a lot of money tied up in all of this and Zefield had been forced to flee once before already.

Doing so again would likely damage his reputation and have rumors of him being unreliable spread.

Of course, the situation being what it was, that was understandable.

The space monsters in this system were far from normal, and there were just too many of them.

Even soone as competent and renowned as Zefield could not be expected to handle things as they were.

...

Upon returning, Avery sent off a ssage to Zefield that they needed to discuss what he and Liesel had found during their scouting mission.

It was originally supposed to just be an excuse so that the two of them could slack off and rest, but they had ended up discovering sothing big simply by happenstance.

Not wanting to cause a panic, Avery only updated Kasandra, Jasmine, and Ezra on what was going on. He made sure to tell them to be ready to move out at a mont’s notice though.

Being the one in charge of the entire operation, Zefield had been busy dealing with all sorts of matters, but the urgency in Avery’s ssage had him quickly finish up what he had been dealing with and pushing everything else back.

This showed that he truly did have confidence in Avery and trusted him when he had said this was an ergency of the upmost importance.

Only four minutes after sending out the initial request, Zefield sent a call out to the Dauntless over a secure frequency that no one else in the fleet would be able to access.

Without saying anything, Zefield motioned for Avery to begin explaining what was going on.

As concisely as he could, Avery laid out what he and Liesel had discovered.

He had wanted to avoid revealing the psychic attack he had experienced and his own innate abilities.

Yet seeing as how he knew of Petris and it was possible there were other people in the fleet that might have varying levels of psionic powers, he felt that it was pertinent that Zefield knew everything that had occurred. If so people suddenly lost their minds inexplicably, it could throw everyone into chaos

Plus, Zefield seed like the type that could keep a secret, so Avery decided to trust him.

As he continued to listen while reaming silent. Zefield’s expression beca graver with everything that Avery told him.

He had a difficult and important decision to make now.
