Chapter 1110: Chapter 1107: Pregnant

Xiang Ling’er was taken aback for a moment, and couldn’t help but sigh, “Sister-in-law, you and Cousin Chu are both so brave—even I, upon seeing a Silver Mountain, couldn’t help but be tempted.”

Ye Muyu responded solemnly, “Ling’er, you should know that greed is human nature, but sometimes, disasters occur when one cannot control their own greed.”

“Nowadays, not to mention the ine from the rouge shop, the Chu family already has enough to live on. Why should we take money that isn’t ours? There’s a saying that goes well, ‘You can take it with you, but you might not get to spend it.’

“Let’s not even talk about other people’s coveting, just consider if the Emperor knew that his subject’s family owned a mountain of gold. Tell me, wouldn’t that make him unfortable?”

“Besides, having enough silver to spend is enough; there’s no need to hold everything in our own hands. Living fortably is what truly matters.” Ye Muyu’s brows and eyes relaxed, and pared to collaborating with other people which could get messy, she’d much rather cooperate with the Emperor. At worst, she would have to hand over all the silver to the Emperor, and nobody would bother or scheme against her.

Xiang Ling’er nodded in agreement, “Sister-in-law, you’re right, having enough silver to spend is sufficient; our lives are already very blessed now.”

...

She pursed her lips and smiled.

Du Heng couldn’t help but laugh and say, “Sister-in-law, I just heard you speaking ambitiously, and then suddenly you’re longing for a carefree life in a utopia.”

Ye Muyu blinked, her smile sly and even sincere, “But it’s different for you, Du Heng. Right now, the rouge shop’s business is essentially a monopoly, with no petition. The pie is too big for the Chu family to handle alone, but it’s different for you. Opening trade routes, whatever the business, always involves petition with others and isn’t as glaring. You still need to put in the effort, right?”

Du Heng suddenly laughed, “Right, I can’t just watch Brother Chu bee more and more acplished while I fade into the crowd.”

“Sister-in-law, tell me, what do you suggest I do?”

Ye Muyu waved her hand, “I shouldn’t interfere in business matters, but see, this year the weather in Yuzhou has been bad, which has affected the harvests. I’m afraid there might not be enough food. If you find an opportunity, try to stock up a bit.”

“Right, and you could also stock up on some medicinal herbs, given that there have been quite a few people suffering from colds recently.”

“I understand,” mused Du Heng. If Yuzhou or even other state government offices were short on food, the price of grains would rise. Even if he didn’t profit from this, others surely would.

However, Brother Chu was on official duty in Yuzhou; he couldn’t exploit the mon people, but he could take advantage of the wealthy gentry. Their silver could be transacted normally. Nevertheless, food was probably not something the gentry lacked, but medicinal herbs might be a different story.

Du Heng only stayed in Yuzhou for two days before he set off for the Northwest.

Ye Muyu spent her days sewing with Xiang Ling’er, always waiting for a sunny day to venture out, as it was the rainy season.

When Xiang Ling’er was five months pregnant, whatever she ate, she threw up, and Ye Muyu spent each day in the kitchen trying to find something she could keep down, but still, she couldn’t stop Xiang Ling’er from growing thinner day by day.

That evening.

Xiang Ling’er finally managed to eat some pickled radish and drank a little porridge. Ye Muyu breathed a sigh of relief.

Lying in bed, Xiang Ling’er’s eyes red, she reached out and grabbed her hand, “Sister-in-law, I have troubled you so much. If you ever need help in the future, be sure to ask me. I would rather die than refuse.”

“Tsk, tsk, tsk. Don’t talk about dying,” Ye Muyu quickly intervened, took a moist towel to wipe her face, her gestures gentle, “Ling’er, just take good care of yourself, pregnancy is always like this.”
