The boy's soul flickered.

It was a reaction pure and instinctive—the terror of a child confronted with sothing that should not exist, sothing that violated every rule of a world that had, until monts ago, been governed by traffic lights and school bells and the simple, predictable rhythms of mortal life. The boy's light pulsed erratically, brightening and dimming, his newly-ford form threatening to unravel before it had even begun to understand what it was seeing.

The creature—the blue-skinned, red-eyed, tusked thing in ancient robes—did not move. It simply knelt there, its massive form sohow not looming, its presence sohow not threatening, its patience absolute.

"You should not be afraid," it said, and its voice was not what Nicholas expected. It was not deep or booming or filled with the thunder of divine authority. It was soft. Gentle. The voice of a teacher speaking to a child who had woken from a nightmare. "I know I am not what you expected. Few are, when they first arrive. But I am here to help you, little one. I am a ssenger of the underworld, and it is my duty to guide souls like yours to where they need to go."

The boy's flickering slowed. The fear did not vanish—nothing could erase the terror of a ten-year-old faced with death and the strange beings that inhabited its kingdom—but it steadied. The light of his soul began to hold its shape, to coalesce into sothing more stable, more present.

"A ssenger?" The boy's voice was thin, reedy, the voice of a child who had not yet learned that he was no longer a child, that death had stripped him of that protection. "Like... like an angel?"

The creature's tusked face arranged itself into sothing that might have been a smile. "Not quite. Angels belong to other stories, other worlds. I am sothing different. Sothing that has been here since before your modern cities and technology. But I am here for the sa purpose they would be—to lead you, to protect you, to help you find your way."

He extended one blue hand, palm up, the gesture universal in its aning. "Will you co with ? There is a city not far from here. A place where souls can rest, can think, can decide what cos next. You will be safe there. You will not be alone."

The boy's soul pulsed once, twice, three tis. And then, slowly, it moved forward. The light of it settled into the creature's palm like a bird landing on a branch, and the ssenger closed his fingers around it with a tenderness that belied his fearso appearance.

"Good," he said. "That is very good. You are very brave, little one. Braver than many who co here."

Nicholas, hidden in the folds of the boy's soul, watched all of this with an attention that was anything but focused on the conversation.

The ssenger was a revelation.

He had expected sothing else. He had expected, perhaps, a being of pure spirit, a construct of faith and authority like the creatures and beings of the West.

Instead, he found sothing that defied his previous understanding of power, but what Odin had explained and now Nicholas bore witness to the fruits.

The ssenger's soul was mortal.

He could see it, hidden beneath the blue skin and the tusks and the ancient robes—a core of light that was unmistakably, undeniably human. Not divine. Not even immortal, not yet. Human.

But the difference in density was staggering.

A normal mortal soul, Nicholas knew, was a diffuse thing. It spread through the body like light through smoke, insubstantial, easily scattered, easily extinguished. It was the difference between a candle fla and a bonfire—both fire, both light, but one could illuminate a room while the other could burn a city to ash.

The ssenger's soul was not a bonfire. It was a star.

It was condensed, compressed, packed so tightly that it seed to have its own gravity, its own weight, its own taphysical presence that bent the surrounding authorities. Comparing it to a normal mortal soul would be like comparing cotton to solid steel—both fibrous, both material, but one would tear at the slightest pressure while the other could support the weight of mountains.

But it was the shape of it that truly arrested Nicholas's attention.

The ssenger's soul was not natural. It had not grown this way through the slow accumulation of years or the natural expansion of consciousness or through faith. It had been sculpted. Carved. Shaped by so external force into a form that was not rely dense, but deliberately, intricately structured.

He could see the marks of it—the facets, the planes, the sharp edges where material had been removed and polished and refined. It was like looking at a block of marble that had been chiseled into a statue, or a piece of steel that had been hamred into a blade. The raw material was human. The form it had been given was sothing else entirely.

This, Nicholas realized, was the fruit of cultivation. Not the accumulation of power over authority that the Western gods practiced, not the feeding on faith that he had spent so long perfecting his filtration of. This was refinent. The slow, patient work of taking sothing raw and shaping it into sothing better. Of taking a mortal soul and, through discipline and practice and the accumulation of Qi, making it into sothing that could stand alongside the divine.

He filed the observation away. It would be useful later. For now, he had more imdiate concerns.

The ssenger rose from his kneeling position, the boy's soul cradled in his palm, and with his free hand, he gestured.

The air before them split.

It was not a violent tearing, not the rending of reality that Nicholas had witnessed in his own battles. It was more like a curtain being drawn aside, a veil parting to reveal what lay behind. Black smoke swirled at the edges of the opening, thick and dark, but within it—

Within it was a city.

Nicholas, through the fragnt hidden in the boy's soul, stared.

The city was a chaos of architecture, a jumble of eras and styles that should not have been able to coexist but sohow did. Modern skyscrapers of glass and steel rose beside ancient Chinese palaces of wood and tile, their curved roofs adorned with dragons that seed to move in the corner of the eye. Broad boulevards lined with neon signs intersected narrow alleys paved with stone that had been worn smooth by feet that had been walking for millennia. Courtyards filled with flowering trees opened onto plazas where fountains sprayed water that glowed with its own inner light.

It was beautiful. It was impossible. It was, Nicholas realized with a start, not so different from the Shore of the Unconscious, that vast dream-realm that bordered his own Atrium. The sa sense of fantasy, of wonder, of a reality that had been shaped not by the laws of physics but by the accumulated dreams and mories of countless souls.

But where the Shore of the Unconscious was a place of change, ever shifting and transforming, this city was... permanent. Solid. A place where souls could rest for as long as they needed, could build, could create, could simply be.

The ssenger stepped through the portal, and the boy's soul, cradled in his palm, flickered with sothing that might have been wonder.

"This," the ssenger said, his voice warm with sothing that might have been pride, "is the City of the Dead. Or one of them, at least. There are many such places in the underworld—cities and villages, forests and fields, whatever souls need to feel at ho. This one is called Fengdu. It has been here for a very long ti."

He began to walk, and the city unfolded around them, its streets opening, its buildings parting, its inhabitants—other souls, Nicholas realized, thousands of them, going about their business in forms that ranged from barely-visible wisps to solid-seeming figures dressed in fashions from every era of human history—stepping aside to let them pass.

"You will have ti here," the ssenger continued, his voice soft, ant only for the boy. "Ti to rest, to think, to rember. When you are ready, when you have co to terms with what happened, you will have a choice. You can stay here, if you wish. Or you can return to the wheel, to be born again, to live another life. There is no hurry. There is no judgnt. There is only what you need."

The boy's soul pulsed. A question ford in its fading light—the question that every soul asked, sooner or later, the question that had no answer and yet could not help but be asked.

"Why did this happen to ?"

The ssenger was silent for a long mont. And then, in a voice that was softer than soft, he said: "That is the question, isn't it? Why you? Why now? Why any of it? I cannot answer that for you, little one. No one can. But you will have ti here to find your own answer. Or to decide that the question does not matter. Either way, you will not be alone."

The boy's soul steadied. Its light, which had been flickering since the mont of death, settled into a soft, steady glow. It was not happy—how could it be, after what had happened?—but it was... calm. Accepting. Ready, at least, to see what ca next.

The ssenger continued walking, and the city closed around them, and Nicholas, hidden in the folds of the boy's soul, watched and listened and waited.
