Here is sothing they don’t put on the recruitnt posters: fa doesn’t just fade when you stop feeding it. Sotis it gets stuck. Sotis a story gets so soaked in belief that it stops being just a story and turns into a thing — a thing with a little life of its own, humming with all the power people poured into it.

Those things are dangerous. A legend that’s strong enough and old enough doesn’t need a person anymore. It can drift around on its own, looking for soone to attach to, whispering its story to anyone who’ll listen, trying to get believed again so it can grow.

That’s why every Bureau has a vault. A cold stone room in the cellar, sealed with dead-iron and silence-paper, where we lock away the loose, leftover, dangerous bits of fa that nobody’s claiming and nobody can safely erase.

That’s the cursed vault.

And the next morning, thanks to a goose and my big mouth, I was standing in front of its door with a lantern, a clipboard, and a deep sense of personal regret.

The door was as tall as two n and covered in talismans so old the ink had gone brown. I pushed it open. It made the long, low groan that heavy doors only ever make in places you don’t want to be.

Cold air rolled out. It slled like dust and old paper and, faintly, like a hundred conversations that had been going on for a very long ti.

Because the vault was whispering.

Not loud. Just a low, layered murmur from every shelf, every jar, every box — all of it talking at once, very quietly, all day and all night, to nobody.

"—and then he caught the falling tower with his bare—"

"—they say her tears could heal any—"

"—seven sons, each stronger than the—"

I’d been warned about this. You don’t listen. You absolutely do not listen, and you never repeat what you hear, because the second you believe one of these old dead legends — even a little, even by accident — it wakes up and reaches for you.

So I humd a little tune to fill my ears, and I got to work.

The vault was, frankly, a ss. Centuries of locked-up fa, shoved onto shelves with no system at all. There were jars with faces pressed against the glass from the inside. A sword on a high shelf turned, very slowly, to follow as I walked past, which I chose to ignore with everything I had. There was a suit of armor that the tag said belonged to a "Hero of the Bridge," standing empty in the corner, and every ti I looked away I was fairly sure it had taken half a step closer, and every ti I looked back it was perfectly still and innocent.

I did the inventory. Box after box. Whisper, whisper, hum, hum. Hours of it. My handwriting got worse and my humming got more desperate.

And then, in the very back, in the worst corner of the worst room in the worst building in the worst district, I found the reject pile.

The reject pile is where the failures go. The legends that never quite caught on. The boring ones, the half-finished ones, the ones that fell apart because too many people stopped believing partway through. They get tossed in a big bin to slowly fade into nothing.

It was a sad bin. A cracked teacup that "always poured one extra sip" but never for anyone important. A pair of boots from "the second-fastest man in the valley." A flute that only played in a key nobody liked.

And, shoved down the very bottom, under all of it, wedged in like sothing had tried hard to bury it:

A scroll.

Old and battered and water-stained, its wooden handles cracked, its paper gone the color of weak tea. Soone had tied it shut with a frayed red cord. And soone — a long ti ago, in hard, angry brush-strokes — had slapped a tag on it that read:

DEFECTIVE. DO NOT BELIEVE. DO NOT TRUST. DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, LISTEN TO ANYTHING IT TELLS YOU. (This ans YOU.)

Now. I should have left it. Everything about it said leave . The tag was practically begging to leave it.

But here’s the thing about a tag that interesting. You read it twice. And while I was reading it the second ti, I noticed sothing the other reject-pile junk wasn’t doing.

The scroll wasn’t whispering.

Everything else in that bin, in that whole room, was murmuring away, telling its sad little story to the dark. But this one scroll was completely, perfectly silent. Quiet as held breath.

It wasn’t talking.

It was listening.

And I swear, on my noodle shop, on my mat at ho, on every small quiet thing I have ever wanted in my life — the mont I picked it up, the mont my hand closed around that frayed red cord and lifted it out of the bin and into the lantern light, the whole vault went still.

Every whisper stopped at once. The sword on the shelf snapped to face . The empty armor in the corner turned its empty head.

And the scroll in my hand, the silent, defective, do-not-believe scroll, gave a little shiver of dust, and unrolled itself one inch, all on its own, and spoke in a dry, delighted, deeply untrustworthy voice that I would co to know better than my own heartbeat.

"Oh," it said. "Oh, you’ll do nicely."
