~Third POV~
[Sinnoh Region, Next Day, Route 201]
The morning sun, a brilliant, unblemished gold, ascended over the eastern horizon, painting the Sinnoh sky in hues of soft pink and burgeoning clear. A gentle breeze, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth, whispered through the ancient trees of the Verity Lakefront.
Along a winding path, an Azure moved with an easy, confident stride. Perched comfortably on his right shoulder, a cheerful Pikachu with bright red cheeks twitched its nose, taking in the world with bright, intelligent eyes.
Azure's head was adorned by the soft, cream-colored fur of an Eevee, who occasionally nuzzled against his ear, purring contentedly. And tucked securely into the inner pocket of his jacket, a tiny, vibrant Pichu (w) occasionally stirred, its small, soft chirps a gentle vibration against Azure's chest – a secret only he knew.
Azure murmured, his voice a low, pleasant rumble, "Alright, team. Almost there. Verity Lake, then we make our way back to Sandgem in a couple of days."
Pikachu chirped in agreent, its tail a bright flash of yellow. Eevee let out a soft cry and stretched, dislodging a loose strand of Azure's dark hair, "Evoi! (Yup!)"
His steps were light, purposeful. He'd spent the last few days enjoying a rare mont of personal freedom, a short reprieve before his next major undertaking: becoming the bodyguard to Platinum Berlitz.
The thought brought a faint, amused smile to his lips. Mt. Coronet, a family tradition, and he, a forr Pokémon League champion and Battle Frontier conqueror, was now a glorified chaperone. The irony wasn't lost on him, but the Berlitz family's significant offer and the inherent strategic importance of protecting the heir made it a task he'd accepted with characteristic resolve.
*Thwock*
*Burp*
As they neared a clearing, the rustle of leaves was accompanied by other sounds – the distinct thwock of a Poffin being bitten, followed by a loud, satisfied burp, and a sharp, exasperated rebuke, "Dia! You just ate breakfast! Do you have to be so… so Munchlax about it? We're supposed to be observing, not having a picnic!"
Azure stopped, a knowing grin spreading across his face. This was it. The main reason he'd wanted to swing by Lake Verity.
He quietly signaled to his Pokémon. Elekid, who had been jogging alongside him, its electric currents crackling faintly, stopped and lowered its stance. Magby, its small fla on its head flickering, moved to Azure's other side.
A graceful Togetic, with its delicate wings, hovered silently above, its eyes wide with curiosity. Absol, ever vigilant and sensing potential trouble (or just general strangeness), erged from the deeper shadows of the trees, its horn gleaming nacingly as it took up a protective position behind Azure.
The scene confird his expectations. Two boys, one stocky with shaggy dark hair, currently stuffing his face with what looked suspiciously like a homade Poffin, and the other, leaner with spiky, blond hair, gesticulating wildly.
The dark-haired boy mumbled around a mouthful, his Munchlax, Lax, mirroring his every move, happily devouring its own Poffin, "Grumble, grumble… but Pearl, this Mago Berry Poffin is so good…"
Pearl's Chatot, Chatler, echoed its trainer's exasperation, flapping its wings indignantly, cries, "Chat-chat-chat! (Oh boy, here we go again…)"
Pearl sighed dramatically, running a hand through his blond hair as he exclaid, "It's about seeing if the rumors are true! A Red Gyarados at Lake Verity! Don't you rember the TV reports? We're here to witness a marvel, not a buffet!"
Azure chuckled, a soft sound that montarily cut through the boys' bickering. Pearl, startled, spun around, his eyes narrowing instantly. Diamond, however, rely blinked, then offered a half-eaten Poffin in Azure's direction.
He asked, his tone surprisingly earnest despite the food in his mouth, "Want so? It's freshly made."
Pearl's eye twitched as he exclaid, pointing at Azure, "Dia! Don't offer food to strangers! And where did you co from? Did you sneak up on us? Are you trying to do sothing nefarious around Lake Verity?"
Azure raised his hands placidly as he explained himself with an introduction, "Relax, I assure you, I'm not—the na's Azure Sky. And no, I didn't sneak up on you. You two were rather… engrossed in your very animated discussion."
He gestured to Diamond's Poffin, adding, "And your friend's snack."
Pikachu chirped a friendly greeting from Azure's shoulder, its cheeks sparking faintly. Eevee let out a soft cry and yawned.
Elekid crackled, its usually mischievous eyes now calm, and Magby offered a small, warm fla. Even Absol rely observed, its gaze keen but unthreatening.
Pearl, however, remained skeptical. He stared at Azure, then at his Pokémon, his mind racing, 'Azure Sky… why does that na sound familiar?'
He knew his father, Palr, was a well-known Frontier Brain, and he often heard about rising stars in the Pokémon world. But he couldn't quite place it.
Diamond, anwhile, had already assessed the situation. He looked at Azure's relaxed posture, the peaceful deanor of his Pokémon – even the imposing Absol seed more like a watchful guardian than a threat.
Azure took notice of Diamond's staring as he thought mildly impressed, 'That's one perceptive, kid.'
Diamond finally mumbled, taking another bite of his Poffin, "They're okay, Pearl. They don't feel bad. And his Elekid looks like it just wants to snack on so electricity."
Pearl groaned, smacking his forehead lightly as he scolded his friend, "Dia, don't just trust people because their Pokémon look hungry! You're too empathetic sotis! We're supposed to be vigilant!"
Azure couldn't help but chuckle again. It was all so perfectly in character. Diamond, the perceptive empathizer, is utterly fixated on food and the feelings of Pokémon, despite his outwardly dopey appearance.
Pearl, the impatient, bossy, yet fiercely loyal straight man, always determined and quick to judge, much like the willpower he embodied. He'd seen them in action countless tis, albeit through the pages of a manga.
To see them now, flesh and blood, was a surreal and delightful experience. Azure said calmly, his smile genuine, "No need to be vigilant, I promise. I'm just passing through. I made camp nearby last night and wanted to see Lake Verity before heading back to Sandgem Town. It's my second ti in Sinnoh, but my first visiting this lake."
Pearl squinted, trying to piece together the na as he asked curiously, "Sandgem Town… are you a researcher?"
Azure replied, a hint of amusent in his tone, "Not exactly. More of a… professional traveler, you could say. And currently, I'm taking on a temporary job. But enough about . You two were looking for a Red Gyarados?"
Diamond nodded vigorously, nearly choking on his Poffin as he exclaid, "Yeah! Imagine seeing sothing like that! So cool!"
Pearl chid in, montarily forgetting his suspicion, "Exactly! The reports said it popped up right here! We figured it'd be a great warm-up for our cody routine if we saw actual wonders of the world!"
Azure inquired, raising an eyebrow playfully, "Cody routine?"
Pearl puffed out his chest as he proudly declared, "Yeah! We're the funny man and straight man duo! Twinleaf's finest! Everyone in the Sinnoh Region would hear about us becoming the best codians in the region!"
Azure's smile widened as he said, "Ambitious. I like it."
He paused, looking towards the dense foliage that promised the actual lake as he asked kindly, "Well, if you're looking, perhaps I could join you? A few more pairs of eyes might help. Plus, it'd be nice to have so company on the way."
Pearl hesitated, still wary, "I don't know…"
Diamond urged, already finishing his Poffin and looking eager for a new distraction, "Oh, go on, Pearl! He seems nice! And his Pokémon are super chill. See? Even the scary-looking one isn't growling."
He pointed at Absol. Absol let out a low rumble, which Diamond sohow interpreted as agreent. Pearl sighed, shaking his head as he relented, "Fine, fine. But no funny business, alright?"
Azure promised, his eyes twinkling, "None at all. Shall we?"
The trio, now an unlikely quintet with their Pokémon, began to trek through the remaining stretch of forest towards Lake Verity. Pearl, ever the leader, took the front, Chatler fluttering above his head, occasionally chirping instructions to Diamond, who ambled along, occasionally pausing to poke at an interesting leaf or rock.
Azure walked a little behind them, observing with quiet fascination as he thought, 'They're an interesting duo, alright.'

[Sinnoh Region, Lake Verity]
As they wandered through the forest, Pearl asked, trying to glean more information, "So, you've traveled a lot, Azure?"
Azure confird as he began to explain his experience, "Quite a bit. Different regions, different challenges. Every place has its own unique charm."
Diamond piped up, his curiosity piqued, "Like what?"
Azure mused as he honestly gave his experience about his journeys thus far, "Well… Kanto has its grand Gyms, Johto has its ancient traditions, Hoenn has its vibrant seas, and Sinnoh, well, it has a history that feels almost mythical. And then there are the people, the Pokémon… every journey is an education."
Pearl nodded, impressed despite himself as he boasted, "My dad, he's a Frontier Brain, he always talks about how important observation and experience are. He says the more you see, the better battler you beco."
Azure asked, feigning casual interest, "Your father is Palr?"
Pearl bead and was surprised as he asked, "That's right! You know him?"
Azure said smoothly, "Only by reputation. A formidable trainer, I hear."
He knew Palr well, of course, both from the gas and from the few interactions he'd indirectly had with the Battle Frontier's top brass. Pearl's pride was endearing.
They soon broke through the last line of trees, and Lake Verity stretched before them, a vast, shimring expanse reflecting the clear blue sky. The air here felt cooler, carrying a faint, mysterious scent of ancient water and hidden power.
Diamond breathed, his eyes wide, "Whoa…"
Lax gave a soft burp of appreciation, "Burp! Lax… (I'm hungry…)"
Pearl agreed, a rare mont of quiet awe washing over his usually boisterous deanor, "It's incredible. So, where's this Red Gyarados everyone's talking about?"
Azure, Pikachu, Eevee, Elekid, Magby, Togetic, and Absol spread out along the shore, their gazes sweeping across the tranquil surface of the lake. The water was remarkably still, unbroken by any large-scale activity.
A few Starly glided gracefully overhead, and a stray Magikarp splashed lazily near the edge, but there was no sign of anything as spectacular as a Red Gyarados. Pearl finally said, his shoulders slumping, "Huh… Guess it was just a fluke. Or the TV exaggerated."
Diamond suggested, ever the optimist, "Maybe it went back to wherever it ca from? It probably had other important Red Gyarados things to do."
Azure smiled faintly as he replied casually, "It wouldn't be the first ti a sensational report turned out to be… sowhat embellished. Still, it's a beautiful spot."
He took a deep breath, letting the peaceful atmosphere wash over him. After a few more minutes of fruitless searching, Pearl clapped his hands together as he declared, "Alright, well, no Red Gyarados, no impromptu cody gig. Let's head back, Dia. We've got a long walk back to Twinleaf."
He turned to Azure with a sheepish expression as he stated, "Thanks for coming along, Azure. Sorry, it was a bust."
Azure replied casually with no worries on his face, "No worries. It was a pleasant walk. I should be heading back towards Sandgem anyway."
*VIZzzzz*
He was just about to wish them well when suddenly he felt a strange vibration on his wrist. He looked down at the Omni Ring—a gift from Arceus. It began to glow with a soft, white light, pulsing like a heartbeat.
*Thump-thump*
*Thump-thump*
Diamond asked, walking up beside him, "Sothing wrong, Azure?"
Lax stood at the water's edge, poking a Magikarp that had drifted too close to the shore. Azure whispered, "The lake… It's reacting."
*Ripple*
The center of the lake began to ripple, even though there was no wind. A distortion appeared in the air—a shimring, translucent silhouette. It was small, with two long tails ending in red jewels and a pinkish, rounded head.
Pearl gasped. He scrambled to grab his cara, but his hands were shaking with excitent, "What is that?! A Pokémon?! Dia! Look! It's a—it's a—"
*Wooosh*
The figure hovered for a fraction of a second. Its eyes, glowing with an ancient wisdom, locked onto Azure. More specifically, they locked onto the Omni Ring.
The entity—sprit, the Being of Emotion—tilted its head. It sensed the traces of the Alpha, the Creator. It felt the echoes of Arceus within the ring Azure wore. A look of profound, wide-eyed surprise crossed the Pokémon's ethereal face.
*SHING*
In a flash of light, the figure vanished. The ripples smoothed out, and the lake returned to its placid, silent state.
Pearl shouted, finally getting his cara out, only to capture a picture of empty water, "It's gone! I missed it! I missed the scoop of the century! AHHH! Why am I so slow?!"
Diamond blinked, looking at the spot where the spirit had been as he asked, "It looked... surprised. Do Pokémon get surprised?"
Azure stayed silent, his heart racing. He knew what that was.
He knew why it had looked at him. The Lake Guardians were the keepers of Sinnoh's, and they had recognized the power he carried—not just his Pokémon, but the cosmic connection of the Omni Ring.
Azure said, breaking the silence as he adjusted his jacket, "Well… I think that's more than enough excitent for one day. Don't you think?"
Pearl yelled, waving his arms as he went on a tangent, "Are you kidding?! That was incredible! We must tell soone! We must—wait, nobody will believe us without a photo. Dia! This is all your fault for eating during the climax!"
Diamond casually dismissed Pearl's worries as he said shalessly, "I was hungry, Pearl... the mystery made crave salt..."
Azure chuckled, turning back toward the path as he stated, "I have to head to Sandgem Town. I've got a job to start, and I can't be late. You two heading back to Twinleaf?"
Pearl sighed, his shoulders sagging as he replied, "Yeah. Back to the drawing board. We need to polish our 'Lake Monster' routine anyway."
Diamond nodded, falling into step behind Pearl in a cheerful voice, "See ya, Azure. Thanks to the rice ball company."
Azure called out, giving the two advice, mysteriously stating, "Good luck, you two. And Pearl? Keep an eye on your willpower. You're going to need it."
Pearl paused, looking back at Azure with a confused expression as he asked, "My willpower? What's that supposed to—hey! Wait! Don't just say cool cryptic things and walk away! That's my bit!"
Azure didn't look back, rely waving a hand over his shoulder as he disappeared into the woods. Pikachu and Eevee mimicked the gesture, and even the Pichu (w) poked a tiny paw out to wave goodbye.
As Azure walked toward Route 201, the weight of his new responsibility began to settle on him. He wasn't just a trainer anymore; he was a guardian in a region that was about to face a cataclysmic shift.
But as he felt the steady heartbeat of his Pokémon and the lingering warmth of the Omni Ring, he felt a sense of readiness. Azure whispered to the wind, "Sandgem Town, next stop. And after that, perhaps train a new student or students while I'm at it…"
Behind him, the lake remained still, but the air felt different. The wheels of fate had begun to turn…
"Crick-crick-crick."
A Kricketot chirped in the distance. The journey of the Sinnoh Dex Holders had technically begun, but for Azure, this was just the beginning of his most important contract yet. He had two days to prepare.
Two days to beco the shield for the Berlitz na. And as he looked at the gleaming Pokéballs on his belt—containing the likes of Blissy and Ursaluna—he knew that whatever darkness was coming for Sinnoh, it would have to go through him first.
Azure said calmly, his pace quickening, "Let's go, guys. We've got a lady to protect."
Pikachu cheered, and the group vanished into the green depths of the Verity Lakefront, leaving only the fading echoes of Pearl's distant shouting and the sll of Diamond's spicy Poffins in the air.
