Both trainers threw their Poké Balls simultaneously. Out of respect for the old
master's specialty, Kenji chose his "Sea Sovereign"—Gyarados.
On the opposite side, Lawson opened with Pelipper.
As an elite strategist of the Northwest, Lawson relied on a classic Rain-Dance
core. The mont Pelipper materialized, it let out a sharp, gurgling cry. High
above the stadium, the clouds thickened and swirled, turning a bruised
purple-black.
Patter-patter-patter.
A heavy, rhythmic downpour began to lash the arena.
Ability: Drizzle—Activated!
The rain slicked the rocky island and hamred against the deep waters of the
moat, creating a million tiny ripples. The cool water washed over Gyarados's
sea-blue scales, its expression of primal fury softening slightly as it basked
in its favorite weather.
Kenji didn't hesitate. He pulled back his sleeve, revealing the Key Stone set
into his ga Bracelet. "Gyarados! It's showti! ga Evolve!"
"HOOOOOOOOOOR!"
Gyarados arched its massive body, its roar drowning out the sound of the rain. A
pillar of prismatic light erupted, engulfing the Great Serpent.
"Pelipper, good work. U-turn!" Lawson commanded.
"OU!"
Before the light of evolution had even faded, Pelipper dove in a tight,
aerodynamic arc, striking the shimring cocoon of energy before snapping back
into its Poké Ball in a streak of red light.
"Go! Poliwrath!"
THOOM!
Lawson's second Poké Ball burst open. A muscular, blue-skinned brawler landed on
the rocky island, its thick arms rippling with explosive power.
"YONG!"
As the Poliwrath took its stance, the light around Gyarados shattered. Standing
in the center of the arena was ga Gyarados.
With the evolution, its typing shifted from Water/Flying to Water/Dark. On
paper, this was a dangerous move—it was now four tis weak to the Fighting-type
moves of a Poliwrath.
"Waterfall!"
"Match it with your own Waterfall!"
"BOOM!"
The two Water-types charged, cloaking themselves in massive, high-pressure veils
of water that acted like liquid battering rams.

Lawson's Poliwrath was built for this weather. Under the rain, its Swift Swim
ability doubled its speed, making the usually bulky Pokémon move with the grace
of a hydroplaning jet.
The two collided in the center of the island.
"Dynamic Punch!"
"Conqueror's Infusion: Aqua Tail!"
THUD!
Poliwrath threw a punch backed by the full weight of its Level 98 stats, the air
exploding around its fist. Gyarados countered by whipping its massive tail
around, the scales coated in a dense, black-tinted aura of sheer intimidation.
A dull, heavy boom echoed through the valley. Despite the level gap and the
typing disadvantage, Gyarados's raw physical mass and Conqueror's Infusion
proved superior. Poliwrath was launched backward, its feet sliding across the
wet rock before it lost its footing entirely.
SPLASH!
The brawler fell into the deep moat.
"Thunder!" Kenji roared.
"HOOOOOOR!"
Gyarados threw its head back. Above, the rain clouds crackled with sudden,
violent electricity. A jagged bolt of heavenly lightning descended, striking the
surface of the water exactly where Poliwrath had subrged.
BOOM!
Because of the rain, Thunder was a guaranteed hit. The water in the moat acted
as a massive conductor, turning the pool into a high-voltage trap.
"YONGGG!"
Poliwrath erupted from the water, its body twitching. Although it was a
Water-type, the sheer voltage of a Gyarados-powered Thunder was agonizing.
Zzzzt—Zzzzt…
Kenji's eyes lit up. Luck was on his side. The Thunder had proc'd its secondary
effect—Poliwrath was now Paralyzed.
With the paralysis slowing it down, Swift Swim was effectively neutralized.
Lawson frowned, realizing his speed advantage had just vanished.
"Poliwrath! Haze!"
"Yong…"
Poliwrath clapped its hands together, exhaling a thick, freezing mist that
swallowed the arena. Haze was a veteran's move; it reset all stat changes on the
field, effectively deleting Gyarados's Intimidate debuff and any other montum
Kenji had built.
As the fog grew thick, a dark shadow lunged through the mist. It was ga
Gyarados, its Aqua Tail swinging like a scythe.
"Detect!"
"WHISH!"
At the very last second, Poliwrath's eyes glowed with a sharp light. It ducked
beneath the massive tail, the displaced water nearly taking its head off. Detect
allowed it to evade the hit perfectly, but it couldn't keep dodging forever.
"Mind Reader!" Lawson shouted.
The brawler centered its breathing, its gaze locking onto Gyarados's presence
within the mist. A psychic link was established; no matter where the serpent
moved, the next attack would find its mark.
"Clear the field! Hurricane!" Kenji commanded.
"HOOOOOOOO!"
Gyarados began to spin its body, creating a localized vortex. In the rain,
Hurricane beca a precision tool. The wind ripped through the Haze, shredding
the mist and revealing the two combatants.
"Focus Blast!"
"YONG!!!"
With Mind Reader active, the notoriously inaccurate Focus Blast beca a homing
missile. Poliwrath gathered a sphere of pure, concentrated Fighting-type energy
between its palms and fired.
The white-hot orb scread across the arena, striking ga Gyarados squarely in
the chest.
BOOM!
The super-effective impact was massive, flipping the twenty-ter serpent over
and sending it crashing into the rocks. The "Sea Sovereign" had taken a heavy
blow.
