The staff mber asked Kenji if he needed to heal his Pokémon, as was customary. After Kenji declined, the staff began preparing the next round—the main Gym Battle against the Gym Leader.
The wait wasn't long. After only ten minutes, the staff mber returned to guide Kenji to a new, much wider battle arena.
Standing in the trainer's box was a silver-haired girl with a black baseball cap, holding an Ultra Ball.
Kenji focused his gaze. Seeing that familiar, striking silver hair, he knew imdiately: it was Yuki, whom he hadn't seen since the Exchange Tournant.
"Yuki? Are you..."
As the tropolis Gym Leader's sister, was she moonlighting as a challenge proxy?
Yuki's expression beca awkward. She silently put the Ultra Ball back on her waist.
...
Yuki walked off the battlefield and approached Kenji, a bit embarrassed. "I was the tropolis Gym's deputy leader."
A deputy leader? Kenji's expression was weird. Tyson Tang had huge audacity, leaving his college freshman sister, who had just beco a Professional Trainer, as a proxy.
"Wait here. My brother should be awake. I ssaged him; he'll be right over," Yuki said, putting her phone away.
"Huh? Aren't you the deputy leader?" Kenji asked, confused as to why she was backing down.
Was she still holding a grudge over the Larvitar incident and his two victories, trying to get her brother to take revenge in a Gym Battle?
"I can't beat you," Yuki said bluntly.
Since Yuki was honest enough to admit defeat, Kenji simply waited for Tyson Tang to arrive. He was quite curious about the young tropolis Gym Leader.
A mont later, a man in ssy, casual clothes with disheveled hair walked in.
"My brother is here," Yuki said abruptly.
Kenji was surprised. Looking closely, he realized this slovenly man really was the tropolis Gym Leader, Tyson Tang. Online videos showed a put-together gentleman, but this man...
"Good morning! You must be Kenji, right? Hello, hello! I watched your matches!" Tyson walked over and shook Kenji's hand with imnse enthusiasm.
Kenji was stunned by Tyson's passion and was forced to reciprocate.
"Snowy told you were challenging. I was in such a rush I didn't even have ti to wash up. Please excuse the state of ," Tyson apologized, aware of his current appearance.
Snowy? Kenji almost laughed, realizing it sounded like a pet's na. But rembering Yuki was right there, he quickly suppressed his smile.
Yuki's face turned livid. She kicked Tyson's butt.
Tyson dodged easily, clearing his throat and changing the subject. "Alright, alright, let's not waste any ti. Let's battle."
Finally getting to the point, Kenji nodded, his eyes burning with fighting spirit.
This was his first official Gym Battle.
The two separated, taking their places in the trainer's boxes.
Tyson stood ready, throwing a wink at Yuki in the observation seats. "Snowy, watch big brother avenge you today," he said confidently.
Yuki gave him a look of utter helplessness and didn't bother to respond.
Kenji was slightly surprised. The prestigious tropolis Gym Leader was secretly such a goofball.
Tyson recalled his gaze and, when he looked at Kenji again, his expression suddenly beca serious. "I watched your matches. I'm very interested in your Beedrill. I look forward to seeing it perform up close."
He wants to see Beedrill? He'll have to show what he's got first, Kenji thought. Beedrill wouldn't be interested in any battle below the Elite Four-level.
The referee took his position and loudly announced the rules.
It would be a 3v3 battle, with one substitution allowed during the match.
"Battle... begin!!"
"Go! Arbok!"
"Go! Toxicroak!!"
"CHAAA!!!—"
"Groak..."
Kenji chose to lead with his level 45 Arbok, while Tyson countered with a Toxicroak.
Toxicroak
Level: LV.59
Ability: Poison Touch (Physical contact with the Pokémon may poison the attacker.)
Potential: B
A formidable level 59 Toxicroak.
League regulations stated that a Gym Leader could adjust the difficulty based on the challenger's number of badges. Challengers with fewer than four Provincial Badges could only face a maximum of one Gym Leader-level Pokémon.
The fact that Tyson led with a level 59 Toxicroak ant he was serious.
Tyson, seeing Arbok, suddenly brightened. "Goodness! What a special Arbok! I've never seen one like it!"
Arbok's black scales glead with a cold light. Its sharp, angular Dragon-head was held high, and the scarlet in its belly pattern flashed. A terrifying pressure instantly swept across the arena.
"Groak..."
Toxicroak stepped back warily, its eyes betraying caution.
"Arbok! Dragon Dance!"
"What the hell is that?" Tyson was stunned, confused by the move Arbok was using.
